Physical activity and depressive symptoms in young adults: a moderated mediation model of neighborhood trust and growth mindset.

INTRODUCTION: While physical activity is widely recognized as an effective intervention for mitigating depressive symptoms among young adults, the psychosocial mechanisms mediating these effects are not yet fully elucidated. Grounded in China's national fitness campaign and the development of 15-minute community living circles, this study proposes a socio-cognitive integration model to examine community-level mechanisms linking physical activity to reduced depressive symptoms. METHODS: Drawing on data from the 2022 China Family Panel Studies (CFPS), this study employed generalized structural

Essential work, unequal places: Neighborhood characteristics of the essential workforce in the United States during the COVID-19 pandemic.

INTRODUCTION: At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, more than 55 million U.S. workers continued providing "essential" services crucial to public health, safety, and economic stability, even as large segments of the workforce sheltered at home. Despite the central role these workers played in safeguarding the economy and the greater American public, little is known about the neighborhood environments in which essential workers lived and how well these communities were equipped to support the health and well-being of essential workers during the pandemic. Therefore, the primary objective of thi

Identifying Active Ingredients of the Association Between Neighborhood Disadvantage and Disordered Eating in Youth.

BACKGROUND: Emerging research suggests neighborhood disadvantage is associated with disordered eating (DE; e.g., binge eating, body dissatisfaction) beginning in middle childhood, with effects that increment those of proximal disadvantage (e.g., family income). Understanding factors that contribute to early risk for youth living in disadvantaged neighborhoods is critical because childhood DE predisposes youth to more severe eating disorders in adolescence/adulthood. However, the specific "active ingredients" through which neighborhoods impact DE remain unknown. We examined community violence e

Association of Neighborhood Characteristics and Chronic Pain in Children and Adolescents in the United States.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the associations between neighborhood characteristics and chronic pain during childhood and adolescence in the United States, 2020-2021. METHODS: Cross-sectional analysis of the 2020 and 2021 National Survey of Children's Health. National Survey of Children's Health grouped parents' responses to questions about neighborhood characteristics into 5 categories: neighborhood support, neighborhood safety, school support, neighborhood amenities, and the presence of detracting neighborhood elements. Chronic pain was defined as parents reporting their children had "frequent or

Self-Reported Visual Difficulty and Daily Activity Limitations: The Moderating Role of Neighborhood Characteristics.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Understanding how neighborhood-level factors moderate the relationship between visual health and activity limitations could inform strategies for successful aging in place among older adults with sensory impairments. Guided by a vision loss impact framework, this study aims to examine whether neighborhood social cohesion and physical disorder moderate the association between visual difficulty and activity limitation. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Secondary analyses were conducted using data from Round 5 of the National Health and Aging Trend Study. A 4-level indicato

Model of human epidermis reconstructed in vitro with keratinocytes and melanocytes on dead de-epidermized human dermis.

CONTEXT: Recent progress in the field of epithelial culture techniques has allowed the development of culture systems in which the reconstructed epidermis presents characteristics of morphological differentiation similar to those seen in vivo. Human epidermis reconstructed in vitro may be used as the best alternative for the in vitro testing of the toxicology and efficiency of products for topical use, as well as in the treatment of skin burns and chronic skin ulcers. OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate a method for obtaining human epidermis reconstructed in vitro, using keratinocytes and melanocytes c

Isolation and characterization of canine adenovirus type 2 (CAV-HN45) and its selective infection of human cervical cancer cells with preliminary oncolytic potential.

Canine adenovirus type 2 (CAdV-2) infects the respiratory tissues of dogs and induces canine infectious laryngotracheitis. CAdV-2 has a high incidence of infection and is easily co-infected with other viruses. Moreover, CAdV-2 is a mammalian adenovirus with characteristics similar to those of Human Adenovirus Type 5 (HAdV-5), making it a promising candidate for recombinant vaccine development and gene therapy applications. In this study, we isolated and identified a CAdV-2 strain (CAV-HN45) and investigated its growth characteristics and viral tropism by evaluating its infection efficiency in

Spatial neighborhood patterns of pulmonary tuberculosis in a large urban area: the case of Santiago, Chile.

In recent years, global concern about tuberculosis (TB) has grown due to the slow progress in achieving control goals, with a record number of cases reported worldwide in 2022. This study analyzed the spatial distribution of all pulmonary TB cases reported between 2016 and 2020 in the Gran Santiago (n = 3348), Chile's largest urban area. Cases were geocoded using an automated cascade method (Bing Maps, Google Maps, and manual verification) and aggregated at the neighborhood level. To detect spatial clusters, we estimated gender-adjusted rates, assessed spatial autocorrelation using Moran's I,

Looking through different lenses at meeting places in disadvantaged Dutch neighbourhoods: A qualitative participatory study assessing needs, barriers and success elements for women with non-Western migration backgrounds and teenage girls.

OBJECTIVE: The living environment can significantly influence health negatively, particularly in disadvantaged neighbourhoods where risk factors and limited resources converge. Social cohesion and inclusive meeting places promote well-being, yet little is known about what makes these spaces accessible and meaningful for specific groups. This study explored how neighbourhood meeting places can better align with the needs of two often underrepresented groups: women with a non-Western migration background and teenage girls (12-18 years old), in four disadvantaged Dutch neighbourhoods. METHODS: A

Associations between neighbourhood characteristics, physical activity and depressive symptoms: the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966 Study.

BACKGROUND: Due to rapid urbanization, there is a need to better understand the relative roles of residential environment and physical activity in depression. We aimed to investigate whether neighbourhood characteristics are related to the presence of depressive symptoms and whether the association is modified by physical activity. METHODS: This cross-sectional study used the 46-year-old follow-up data (n = 5489) from the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966. Data on depressive symptoms, measured by Beck Depression Inventory-II, and self-reported and accelerometer-measured physical activity wer

A human leukemia cell with both B and T cell surface receptors.

Bone-marrow-derived (B) and thymus-derived (T) lymphocytes can be distinguished by the presence of a number of receptors and differentiation antigens. The presence of these markers has facilitated the identification and characterization of the mononuclear cells in a number of animal and human lymphoid malignancies. We describe here the immunological properties of human leukemia cells that are highly unusual, since they simultaneously bear the receptor for sheep erythrocytes characteristic of human T lymphocytes and the receptor for antigen-antibody-complement complexes characteristic of human

Epidemiology of fascioliasis in human endemic areas.

Considered a secondary zoonotic disease until the mid-1990s, human fascioliasis is at present emerging or re-emerging in many countries, including increases of prevalence and intensity and geographical expansion. Research in recent years has justified the inclusion of fascioliasis in the list of important human parasitic diseases. At present, fascioliasis is a vector-borne disease presenting the widest known latitudinal, longitudinal and altitudinal distribution. Fasciola hepatica has succeeded in expanding from its European original geographical area to colonize five continents, despite theor

Human cancer xenografts in immunocompromised mice provide an advanced genuine tumor model for research and drug development-A revisit of murine models for human cancers.

Molecular and cell biology studies have proven that human cancers are an enormously heterogenous disease, even if they originate from the same organ and tissue with identical morphological characteristics. Cancer cells in tumors from different individuals exhibit somewhat different characteristics on multiple levels, such as with respect to 1) their genetic polymorphism; 2) epigenetic mechanisms; 3) group gene activation/inactivation; 4) cell metabolism behavior; 5) aberrant incomplete terminal differentiation; 6) proliferative potential; and 7) hierarchical structure. These multiple parameter

Advancements in medical research using fetal sheep: Implications for human health and treatment methods.

Sheep are typically considered as industrial animals that provide wool and meals. However, they play a significant role in medical research in addition to their conventional use. Notably, sheep fetuses are resistant to surgical invasions and can endure numerous manipulations, such as needle puncture and cell transplantation, and surgical operations requiring exposure beyond the uterus. Based on these distinguishing characteristics, we established a chimeric sheep model capable of producing human/monkey pluripotent cell-derived blood cells via the fetal liver. Furthermore, sheep have become cru

Management practices and human-horse relationships are associated with horse personality traits.

The human-horse relationship has evolved through centuries of domestication, shaping how horses are managed and interact with people. Horses show interindividual behavioural differences that constitute personality, with implications for welfare, management and human-horse interactions. Although equine personality has a genetic component, environmental and relational factors may influence its expression, yet effects of everyday management practices remain poorly understood. This study examined associations between owner-rated horse personality traits and human-controlled environmental and relat

Micro/nanoplastics and human health: A review of the evidence, consequences, and toxicity assessment.

Micro/nanoplastics are one of the emerging contaminants having potential to affect human health negatively owing to their inherent properties as well as presence of various chemicals/additives into it. A number of studies have demonstrated the presence of these ubiquitous contaminants in various organs and biological fluids of human body. Physiological systems have also been found to be affected by the invasion of these particles. Notably, altered cell morphology and mitochondrial cell transport, reduction in cell viability, oxidative stress, conformational changes and denaturation of proteins
