The web lift and posterior pull for the aging face.

There are many factors that contribute to the aging neck. We have recently begun employing a percutaneous suture spanning the submentum combined with a posterior platysma pull. We present our initial results with this technique. In this retrospective study, subjects underwent the combined procedure with and without concomitant rhytidectomy. Cephalometric analysis was used to compare the preoperative cervicomental angle (CMA) and hyomental distance (HMD) with postoperative values at 4 weeks. Subjects also were queried on their postoperative satisfaction. Twenty-five subjects were included in th

Papillary carcinoma in a thyroglossal duct cyst: management and algorithm for treatment of a rare entity.

Thyroglossal duct cyst carcinoma is a very rare finding and its presentation is similar to that of a benign cyst, which is the most common congenital lesions of the neck. The diagnosis is usually made postoperatively after histological examination. A case of a surgically treated 47-year-old patient with a papillary carcinoma in a thyroglossal duct cyst is presented. The patient underwent the Sistrunk procedure. After stratification in the proposed high risk group, subsequent total thyroidectomy and radioiodine therapy were performed successfully. The patient remains tumor-free 18 months postop

Comparison and evolution of perceptual and acoustic characteristics of voice after supracricoid partial laryngectomy with cricohyoidoepiglottopexy.

The present prospective study, based on a series of 12 male patients managed with supracricoid partial laryngectomy with cricohyoidoepiglottopexy (SCPL-CHEP), was designed i) to compare the perceptual and acoustic parameters before surgery and at 6 months after sugery, ii) to evaluate the evolution of the perceptual and acoustic parameters between 6 and 18 months postoperatively, and iii) to determine the correlations between the perceptual and acoustic parameters preoperatively and at 18 months postoperatively. The roughness was found to be significantly worsened after SCPL-CHEP. The jitter,

Glottic carcinoma with a fixed true vocal cord: outcomes after neoadjuvant chemotherapy and supracricoid partial laryngectomy with cricohyoidoepiglottopexy.

Twenty patients with glottic squamous cell carcinoma and a fixed true vocal cord underwent neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by supracricoid partial laryngectomy with cricohyoidoepiglottopexy. Phonation, respiration, and deglutition were preserved. Local control was better than has been previously reported for either extended vertical partial laryngectomy or radiation therapy. All patients were monitored for at least 3 years or until death. The Kaplan-Meier 3-year survival, local recurrence, nodal recurrence, distant metastasis, and second primary rates were 75%, 10.8%, 5%, 10.8%, and 10.8%, r

Maxillofacial surgery and nasal CPAP. A comparison of treatment for obstructive sleep apnea syndrome.

Nasal continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is the primary therapy for obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). Recent reports have indicated, however, that there is a small but significant number of failures related to patient compliance. Primary surgical treatment, which has been uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP), has declined because of poor results. A reviewed of UPPP failures has shown that while UPPP eliminated palatal obstruction, it failed to eliminate base of tongue obstruction. Maxillofacial surgery has been reported as treatment of OSAS by correcting base of tongue obstruction.

Pth1r in Neural Crest Cells Regulates Nasal Cartilage Differentiation.

Neural crest cells (NCC) arise from the dorsal margin of the neural plate border and comprise a unique cell population that migrates to and … tongue protrusion, reduced NCC-derived cranial length, increased mineralization in nasal septum and hyoid bones, and less bone mineralization at interfrontal suture in mutants at E18.5. Importantly, the mutant nasal septum and turbinate cartilage histologically revealed gradual, premature accelerated hypertrophic differentiation. We then studied the underlyi …

Prevalence of mineralization in the para-aural region in dogs with and without ear disease.

Mineralization of the para-aural soft-tissue region between the tympanic bulla, hyoid apparatus and nasopharynx in dogs has not been described in veterinary literature. The objective of the study was to determine the prevalence of para-aural mineralization on head computed tomography (CT), describe its morphological features, and assess associations with middle-ear disease, body weight, age, and breed. This retrospective case-control study of 1,833 canine head CTs (January 2012 - December 2024) identified para-aural mineralization in 15 dogs (0.8%) and affected cases were compared with 30 bree

Styloid-carotid artery syndrome treated surgically with Piezosurgery: a case report and literature review.

Styloid-carotid artery syndrome was first described by Eagle and is associated with cervical and facial pain caused by head movement resulting from mechanical compression of the carotid nerve plexus due to an elongated styloid process. The case of a 49-year-old man with persistent cervical pain, neurological symptoms and an elongated styloid process of 7.5 cm is reported here; this patient was successfully treated using Piezosurgery. In addition, a literature review is included.

Diagnostic accuracy of the Gugging Swallowing Screen and exploratory submental ultrasonographic findings in dysphagia screening for Parkinson disease: a retrospective cross-sectional study using videofluoroscopy as reference standard.

BACKGROUND: Oropharyngeal dysphagia is common in Parkinson's disease, but it may remain clinically silent until complications occur. Bedside screening is widely used in routine care, although its diagnostic accuracy remains uncertain. Submental ultrasonography has emerged as a non-invasive adjunct for bedside assessment of swallowing-related structures and movement. METHODS: In this retrospective cross-sectional study, institutional records of adults with Parkinson's disease assessed between October 2021 and June 2023 were analyzed. Bedside swallowing screening was performed with the Gugging

Infrahyoid myofascial flap for tongue reconstruction.

For selected cases, reconstruction of the tongue may be required after tumor removal. This study was undertaken to demonstrate a simplified concept of tongue reconstruction with emphasis on infrahyoid myofascial flaps (IMF). The defects of the tongue were classified in 23 patients according to the extent of tumor growth, functional and surgical aspects. The oral tongue (OT; n = 1), base of tongue (BT; n = 12) or both areas (OT and BT; n = 10) were involved, with (n = 14) or without (n = 9) infiltration of adjacent tissues. Minor defects (extent (1/4) or less) required no reconstructive procedu

Genioplasty distraction osteogenesis and hyoid advancement for correction of upper airway obstruction in patients with Treacher Collins and Nager syndromes.

BACKGROUND: Treacher Collins and Nager syndromes may present with mandibular hypoplasia that causes posterior collapse of the tongue base and a decreased oropharyngeal airway. Mandibular distraction and orthognathic advancement are effective treatments to correct the airway, but failure may occur despite achieving class I occlusion. For this select population, the authors propose a novel procedure of genioplasty distraction and hyoid advancement to optimize epiglottal positioning. METHODS: Patients diagnosed with Treacher Collins (n = 5) or Nager syndrome (n = 3) with obstructive sleep apnea

Supracricoid partial laryngectomy with cricohyoidoepiglottopexy for "early" glottic carcinoma classified as T1-T2N0 invading the anterior commissure.

PURPOSE: "Early" glottic squamous cell carcinoma classified as T1-T2N0 with anterior commissure invasion is conventionnaly managed with vertical partial laryngectomy (VPL) or radiation therapy (RT). At our insitution, in the early 1980s, vertical partial laryngectomy was progressively replaced by supracricoid partial laryngectomy with cricohyoidoepiglottopexy (SCPL-CHEP). The medical files and operative charts of 62 patients with "early" glottic carcinoma classified as T1-T2N0 invading the anterior commissure, consecutively managed with cricohyoidoepiglottopexy, were retrospectively reviewed t
