AIM: To compare the fluid management of hypernatraemic dehydration in acute gastroenteritis in those who developed cerebral oedema (cases) versus those who did not (controls).
METHODS: A retrospective study of 97 cases of hypernatraemic dehydration at a tertiary children's hospital in China over five years, in which rehydration regimes of 49 children who developed cerebral oedema were compared with 48 children who made an uneventful recovery.
RESULTS: Risk factors for cerebral oedema (vs. no cerebral oedema) were an initial fluid bolus (29/49 vs. 15/48, P=0.006), the mean rate of bolus infus

There have been several reports in the literature about hypernatraemic dehydration and severe malnutrition in exclusively breastfed infants. The authors report a series of four such cases admitted to the Newborn Special Care Unit of the University Hospital of the West Indies over a seven-year period. All four were term infants who had weight loss of greater than 20% of their birthweight, serum sodium levels greater than 175 mmol/L, metabolic acidosis and pre-renal failure at presentation. Three of the infants had seizures shortly after presentation. One of the infants died soon after admission

UNLABELLED: The hypernatremic dehydration defined by a serum sodium concentration> or = to 150 mmol/l, is a particular form of acute dehydration and constitutes a medical emergency requiring a prompt and adequate diagnosis and management.
PURPOSE: To precise the epidemiological profile, course, causes and therapeutic particularities of hypernatremic dehydration in children.
POPULATION AND METHODS: Retrospective review of 105 children admitted in the general Paediatrics department of the Fattouma Bourguiba university hospital in Monastir (Tunisia), for hypernatremic dehydration between Januar

Holoprosencephaly includes a spectrum of conditions that have in common the associated anomalies of false median cleft lip, nasal malformation, orbital hypotelorism, and brain malformations. We recently encountered a patient with holoprosencephaly presenting with a rare unilateral cleft of the lip. This patient was potentially viable, although mental development was retarded.

BACKGROUND: Netherton's syndrome is characterized by ichthyosis, trichorrhexis invaginata and other air shaft anomalies, and atopic diathesis. The ichthyosis is present at birth and can be complicated by hypernatremic dehydration.
CASE REPORT: Adrien was the first child of non-consanguineous parents. His birth weight was 3,110 g. Ichthyosis was present at birth and the diagnosis of Netherton's syndrome was subsequently confirmed by skin biopsy. He was admitted to intensive care at the age of 4 days for a 20% loss of weight and dehydration. His blood chemistry was: Na+ = 192 mmol/l; K+ = 6.9 m

Among 217 premature neonates with birth-weights less than or equal to 1,500 g who died, in whom post mortem examination was carried out during the years 1978-1984, 11 cases of kernicterus (5%) were found. A comparative study was undertaken between these 11 children and 42 children of the same population matched for birth-weight, gestational age and life duration. The following clinical and biological perinatal data were found more frequently in the kernicterus group: meningitis (3/11 vs 0/42), p less than 0.01), hyperchloronatremic dehydration (3/11 vs 1/42, p less than 0.05) and hypoglycemia

In a prospective study of abnormalities of plasma sodium concentration carried out over one year 20 patients were identified who had a concentration exceeding 154 mmol(mEq)/1. Of these, eight patients had diabetes mellitus, eight had primary intracranial disorder, and four had become dehydrated. Five of the eight diabetics presented with hyperosmolar, non-ketotic precoma, and in all eight hypernatraemia developed despite treatment with hypotonic (0.45%) saline. There was a good correlation (r = -0.93) between the rates of change of plasma sodium and blood glucose concentrations, and thus a ris

Authors analyse incidence of age, sex and weight in a group of 80 infants with severe hypertonic dehydration. The highest frequency occurs in the first month of life (50%). They study the clinical manifestations of dehydration, neurological condition, diuresis, escleremia, other pathology, complications and mortality. Causes of death are detailed. Peculiar clinical manifestations are discussed according to different ages, emphasising importance of E.C. component in the first weeks of life. Efficiency of peritoneal dialysis is evaluated.

BACKGROUND: Dysnatremia is a common electrolyte abnormality in children, but its prevalence and impact in pediatric earthquake victims are not well established. This study aimed to define the frequency of dysnatremia in pediatric earthquake victims and evaluate its relationship with complications, mortality, and morbidity.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed data from 312 pediatric patients admitted to our hospital after the 2023 Türkiye-Syria earthquakes. Patients were categorized based on admission sodium levels: hyponatremic (< 135 mmol/L), hypernatremic (> 145 mmol/L), and normal (135-14

BACKGROUND: Gestational diabetes insipidus is a rare, transient complication of pregnancy typically characterized by polyuria and polydipsia that may lead to mild electrolyte abnormalities. More severe sequelae of gestational diabetes insipidus are uncommon.
CASE: We present a case of a 25-year-old woman at 23 weeks of gestation in a dichorionic-diamniotic twin pregnancy who developed severe symptomatic gestational diabetes insipidus complicated by rhabdomyolysis and death of both fetuses.
CONCLUSION: Maternal rhabdomyolysis caused by gestational diabetes insipidus is extremely rare. Early r

AIMS: To ascertain the effect of a policy of early weighing on the detection and severity of neonatal hypernatraemic dehydration (NHD) and on breastfeeding rates in the short and medium term.
METHODS: A policy of weighing infants at 72-96 h was introduced from 1 July 2004. Two time periods were studied: pre-policy and post-policy (18 months each). Babies <28 days of age referred to hospital from the community who, on investigation, had plasma sodium concentrations of >145 mmol/l were identified. Age, plasma sodium concentration, percentage loss of body weight at presentation, breastfeeding ra
