Hair Loss in Teenagers: A Review for Primary Care Pediatricians.

Adolescence is a critical developmental period marked by physical, psychological, and social changes, and hair loss can significantly impact self-esteem. Delays in treatment are common, and they sometimes result in permanent hair loss. This article reviews the most common causes of hair loss in adolescents (eg, androgenetic alopecia, alopecia areata, telogen effluvium, traction alopecia, trichotillomania). Key diagnostic approaches include thorough history taking and scalp examination. Management strategies range from pharmacological management to lifestyle modifications and behavioral therapi

Orofacial pain - an update on diagnosis and management.

The diagnosis and management of orofacial pain may be challenging due to complex histories, pathophysiology and associated psychosocial co-morbidities such as depression and anxiety. Neuropathic facial pain conditions such as burning mouth syndrome (BMS), persistent idiopathic facial pain (PIFP), atypical odontalgia (AO) and trigeminal neuralgia (TN) require early recognition by primary care clinicians and referral to secondary care. Acute pain-related temporomandibular disorder (TMD) may be managed in the primary care setting, with identification of those at risk of developing chronic TMD rec

The Development of the Dance Smart Intervention: A Céilí Dance Exercise Intervention for People Living With Dementia and Their Care Partners (Dance Smart Intervention).

Dance is a form of exercise that engages motor, cognitive, social, and emotional skills (Charras et al., 2020). Céilí dance is a traditional Irish social dance offering physical and psychological health benefits, with the added benefit of a social element. People living with dementia and care partners have low levels of physical activity (PA) despite understanding the range of benefits (van Alphen et al., 2016). This study aimed to develop a person-centred dance - based exercise intervention for people living with dementia and care partners. The Medical Research Council Framework (MRCF) and be

Utilizing artificial intelligence to assess academic exam anxiety, perceived stress, and achievement motivation among college students.

INTRODUCTION: Exam anxiety is a multidimensional construct combining physiological reactions and affective responses that can hinder academic performance. Academic stress reflects students' perceived pressure related to workload, deadlines, and self-evaluation. Achievement motivation refers to students' drive to attain optimal performance. This study evaluated academic anxiety, perceived stress, and achievement motivation before and after examinations and examined whether artificial intelligence can effectively assess students' psychological states. METHODS: A cross-sectional, repeated-measur

Unravelling Distress in Psychotic-Like Experiences: A Systematic Review of Non-Clinical Populations.

INTRODUCTION: Psychotic-like experiences (PLEs) are subthreshold psychotic phenomena that occur along the psychosis continuum and are frequently accompanied by distress. However, the factors underlying distress in individuals reporting PLEs-particularly within non-clinical populations-remain insufficiently understood. This systematic review aims to synthesise the evidence on factors directly or indirectly associated with distress in PLEs among non-clinical samples. METHODS: A systematic search of Medline, Web of Science, Embase, and Cochrane (January 2000-March 2025) using the terms psychotic

Lessons learned from 30 years of presymptomatic testing in Huntington Disease.

Presymptomatic testing allows individuals to undergo genetic testing for inherited diseases before symptoms manifest. While valuable in conditions with available preventive strategies, no therapeutic prevention currently exists for Huntington disease, making testing a personal choice rather than a medical recommendation. Available in France since 1992 - following the identification of CAG repeat expansions (>35) in the huntingtin gene - presymptomatic testing is governed by guidelines emphasizing autonomy, benevolence, informed consent, confidentiality, and equity. Its implementation requires

Virtual Exercise in Medicine: A Proof of Concept in a Healthy Population.

BACKGROUND: Science is beginning to establish the benefits of the use of virtual reality (VR) in health care. This therapeutic approach may be an appropriate complementary treatment for some mental illnesses. It could prevent high levels of morbidity and improve the physical health of patients. For many years, the literature has shown the health benefits of physical exercise. Physical exercise in a VR environment may improve the management of mild to moderate mental health conditions. In this context, we developed a virtual environment combined with an ergocycle (the augmented physical trainin

The Detrimental Clinical Associations of Anxiety and Depression with Difficult Asthma Outcomes.

Difficult asthma describes asthma in which comorbidities, inadequate treatment, suboptimal inhaler technique and/or poor adherence impede good asthma control. The association of anxiety and depression with difficult asthma outcomes (exacerbations, hospital admissions, asthma control, etc.) is unclear. This study assessed the clinical associations of anxiety and depression with difficult asthma outcomes in patients with a specialist diagnosis of difficult asthma. Using real-world data, we retrospectively phenotyped patients from the Wessex Asthma Cohort of Difficult Asthma (N = 441) using clini

Long-term sequelae and management following obstetric sepsis.

The long-term consequences of obstetric sepsis have been a growing area of concern requiring attention. This narrative review summarizes the existing literature on the long-term sequelae of sepsis, with a focus on the antepartum and postpartum periods. In this article, we discuss risk factors for and epidemiology of post-sepsis syndrome (PSS) and related long-term medical conditions. We include recommendations for screening for PSS and management strategies involving multidisciplinary teams. PSS and other long-term medical and psychological sequelae of sepsis impact individuals and their commu

The Diagnosis of Trichobezoar Based on the Presence of Hypercholesterolemia: A Case Report.

Trichobezoar refers to the collection of ingested hair accumulating in the gastric mucosa folds, which are found in patients with trichotillomania and trichophagia. We present a case of a nine-year-old girl in Japan who was found to have hypercholesterolemia in the universal lipid screening as a part of the annual health checkups for the prevention of lifestyle-related diseases. Further examination revealed a palpable mass without any digestive symptoms. Imaging studies and the patient's history of pica indicated trichobezoar and upper gastrointestinal endoscopy revealed a large hairball occup
