Single Case Study: Neuropsychological Functioning in a Patient Diagnosed with Intermittent Explosive Disorder Pre and Post Neurosurgery.

Intermittent explosive disorder (IED) is characterized by a difficulty to resist the urge to carry out a recognized harmful behavior. The central symptom is aggressiveness, expressed in isolated episodes. Executive function impairments are habitually found in impulse control disorders. Neuropsychology of impulsivity is related to dysfunctions in the orbito-frontal cortex, dorsolateral cortex and anterior-cingulated regions, being consequently involved in cognitive mechanisms of inhibition. Lesions in those areas are common in IED. In the most severe cases of IED, surgical procedures are requir

Disordered Aggression and Violence in the United States.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence and correlates of DSM-5 intermittent explosive disorder and related aggressive disorders in the United States. METHODS: Community survey data (collected between 2001-2004) from the National Comorbidity Survey-Replication (NCS-R) and Adolescent Supplement (NCS-AS) involving 10,148 adolescents and 9,282 adults, respectively, were reanalyzed with recurrent aggressive behavior defined as 3 serious aggressive outbursts in any given year. In addition to prevalence, assessments of aggression severity, property damage, injury to others, intimate partner assault,

Impulsivity predicts the onset of DSM-IV-TR or RDC hypomanic and manic episodes in adolescents and young adults with high or moderate reward sensitivity.

BACKGROUND: A growing body of research suggests that bipolar disorders (BD) are associated with high impulsivity. Using a multi-method approach, the current study provided the first examination of the hypothesis that impulsivity would prospectively predict shorter time to onset of DSM-IV-TR or RDC hypomanic or manic episodes in a sample selected based on reward sensitivity, a biobehavioral trait shown to predict onset and course of BD. METHODS: 163 participants with high reward sensitivity and 114 participants with moderate reward sensitivity were followed every six months for an average of 2

Reduced posterior corpus callosum area in suicidal and non-suicidal patients with bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: Impulsivity is a characteristic of bipolar disorder (BD) that can contribute to the risk for suicidal behavior. Evidence suggests that gray and white matter abnormalities are linked with impulsivity, but little is known about the association between corpus callosum (CC) and impulsivity in BD. We examined the CC area and impulsivity in euthymic bipolar I patients, with and without lifetime history of suicide attempts, and in healthy controls. METHODS: Nineteen bipolar patients with a suicide attempt history (BP-S), 21 bipolar patients without suicide attempt history (BP-NS), and 22

Measuring impulsivity in Parkinson's disease: a correlational and structural neuroimaging study using different tests.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Impulsivity is an aspect of personality and a major component of multiple neuropsychiatric conditions. In Parkinson's disease, it has been associated with the expression of impulse control disorders, a highly prevalent non-motor complication. Even though multiple tests of impulsivity have been used in this context, the impact of test choice has not been addressed. The aim was to evaluate whether different impulsivity measures in Parkinson's disease share substantial inter-scale and anatomical correlations or rather mirror different underlying phenomena. METHODS: In a c

High prevalence of shoplifting in patients with eating disorders.

PURPOSE: Shoplifting, prevalent in patients diagnosed with bulimia nervosa (BN), is a serious behavioral problem in eating disorder (ED) patients. However, little is known about its overall presence, etiology, and consequences. This study aimed to determine whether shoplifting occurs before or after the onset of ED and to investigate the prevalence and correlates of shoplifting in ED patients. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study of 284 treatment-seeking female patients aged 13-45 with EDs [171 anorexia nervosa (AN); 113 BN]. Shoplifting, impulsive behaviors (self-injury, suicide attempt…

Impulsivity and expectancy in risk for alcohol use: comparing male and female college students in Taiwan.

This was a longitudinal study designed to examine whether gender differences would exist in acquired preparedness model (APM) for explaining the risk of alcohol use in Chinese college students. Impulsivity was assessed for 3,584 students in 2002. In 2003, 1,377 students were traced and assessed in alcohol outcome expectancy, drinking behavior, and alcohol related problems, with 1,122 valid data (male=438). Separated by gender, the data was analyzed with the Structural Equation Model. Results showed that positive, not negative, outcome expectancy for alcohol mediated impulsivity's effect on alc

[Childhood trauma and suicidality in bipolar disorder: The mediatory role of impulsivity].

Childhood trauma (CT) is correlated with suicidality among patients with bipolar disorder (BD). However, it has not been adequately investigated if a third factor, for instance impulsivity, mediates the effect of CT on suicidality in BD. This study aimed to explore potential mediatory effects of impulsivity in the pathway from CT to suicidality in BD. CT was assessed with the Early Trauma Inventory Self Report-Short Form (ETI-SR-SF), impulsivity with the Barratt Impulsivity Scale-11 (BIS-11) while lifetime suicidality was investigated with the Suicidal Behaviors Questionnaire-Revised (SBQ-R).

Homework adherence predicts therapeutic improvement from behavior therapy in Tourette's disorder.

Behavior therapy is a first-line intervention for Tourette's Disorder (TD), and a key component is the practice of therapeutic skills between treatment visits (i.e., homework). This study examined the relationship between homework adherence during behavior therapy for TD and therapeutic outcomes, and explored baseline predictors of homework adherence during treatment. Participants included 119 individuals with TD (70 youth, 49 adults) who received behavior therapy in a clinical trial. After a baseline assessment of tic severity and clinical characteristics, participants received 8 sessions of

Longitudinal characterization of impulsivity phenotypes boosts signal for genomic correlates and heritability.

Genomic correlates of impulsivity have been identified in several genome-wide association studies (GWAS) using cross-sectional designs, but no studies have investigated the molecular genetic correlates of impulsivity phenotypes using longitudinally constructed traits. In 3860 unrelated European participants in the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC), we constructed longitudinal phenotypes for delay discounting and impulsive personality traits (as measured by the UPPS-P impulsive behavior scales) via assessment at ages 24, 26, and 28. We conducted GWASs of impulsivity using…

Where to put Compulsive Sexual Behavior Disorder (CSBD)? Phenomenology matters •

In this commentary paper, it is discussed if Compulsive Sexual Behavior Disorder (CSBD) is best categorized as an Impulse Control Disorder, an Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder or in light of the overlap of characteristics with both Gaming and Gambling Disorder as an addictive behavior. The overlapping features are: loss of control over the respective excessive behavior, giving increasing priority to the excessive behavior under investigation and upholding such a behavior despite negative consequences. Besides empirical evidence regarding underlying mechanisms, phenomenology also plays an importan

Impulsivity in borderline personality disorder: A scoping review of affective, neurobiological and methodological findings.

INTRODUCTION: Impulsivity is a defining feature of borderline personality disorder (BPD), yet it remains unclear whether it reflects a stable deficit in inhibitory control or a context-dependent breakdown in behavioural regulation under conditions of emotional arousal. Existing models variably emphasise trait, cognitive or affective mechanisms, with limited integration of contextual influences. This scoping review synthesised empirical evidence examining affective mechanisms, neurobiological and methodological accounts of impulsivity in BPD. METHODS: Following PRISMA-ScR guidelines, CINAHL, E

Disentangle psychopathic traits, self-construal and prosocial behaviours: A literature review.

Psychopathy encompasses a constellation of personality traits, including interpersonal callousness, absence of remorse and guilt, and impulsivity. While extensive research has linked psychopathy to various antisocial behaviours, there has been a scarcity of studies investigating its association with prosocial behaviours, particularly within diverse sociocultural contexts. This comprehensive review explores recent literature that delves into the intricate interplay between psychopathy, prosocial behaviours, and self-construal. The current review reveals a complex and sometimes contradictory rel

Relationships Between Impulsivity, Methamphetamine use Disorder and Gambling Disorder.

Methamphetamine use disorder (MAUD) and gambling disorder (GD) frequently co-occur. Individuals with both conditions are typically more difficult to treat than those with either disorder alone. This study aimed to investigate the co-occurrence and clinical characteristics of people with MAUD and GD. Between March 2018 and August 2020, 350 men with methamphetamine use entering a compulsory drug rehabilitation center in Changsha, Hunan Province received semi-structured interviews. Participants completed the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale-11 and provided information on childhood upbringings and drug

Psychopathy facets, perceived power, and forms of aggression.

Despite research indicating that exerting dominance and control is characteristic of psychopathy, no research has examined the role that feelings of and desire for power plays in psychopathy-related aggression. Borrowing from various literatures and novel conceptualizations, we investigated the contributions of feeling powerful and/or desiring power and distinct psychopathy facets in explaining aggression manifested in different forms (i.e., physical, verbal, indirect) across 4 samples. Results from regression analyses within each sample and a meta-analysis across the samples indicated that th

Problem Gambling Poker Players: Do They Fit into Blaszczynski and Nower's Pathways Model?

Blaszczynski and Nower's (Addiction 97:487-499, 2002) Pathways Model, an integrative model based on problem gamblers' paths and comorbidities, aids in understanding the heterogeneity of problem gamblers' profiles by classifying them into three subgroups. The profiles of problem gamblers may be linked to the type of gambling practiced. Poker is a popular game, primarily due to the involvement of both chance and strategy in its outcome. However, no study has attempted to fit poker players into the Pathways Model. We recruited an online sample of 245 regular poker players (including 146 non-probl

Essential tremor impairs the ability to suppress involuntary action impulses.

Essential tremor (ET) is a movement disorder characterized primarily by action tremor which affects the regulation of movements. Disruptions in cerebello-thalamocortical networks could interfere with cognitive control over actions in ET, for example, the ability to suppress a strong automatic impulse over a more appropriate action (conflict control). The current study investigated whether ET impacts conflict control proficiency. Forty-one ET patients and 29 age-matched healthy controls (HCs) performed a conflict control task (Simon task). Participants were instructed to give a left or right re
