Higher In vitro Proliferation Rate of Rhizopus oryzae in Blood of Diabetic Individuals in Chronic Glycaemic Control Compared with Non-diabetic Individuals.

Metabolic control improves outcomes associated with mucormycosis. The aim of this study was to compare the in vitro proliferation of Rhizopus oryzae in blood of individuals with and without diabetes at different glycaemic levels. Ninety-five individuals were included. Blood samples from each participant were incubated with sporangiospores of R. oryzae. The germination, filamentation and growth of R. oryzae were compared at different time points. Four groups were defined, one without (group A, n = 30) and three with diabetes: group B (HbA1c ≤7%, N = 24), group C (HbA1c 7.1-9%, N = 20) and group

Faces in a crowd: high socially anxious individuals estimate that more people are looking at them than low socially anxious individuals.

BACKGROUND: People with social anxiety disorder are afraid of being scrutinized by others and often feel that they are the excessive focus of other people's attention. This study investigated whether, when compared to low socially anxious individuals, high socially anxious individuals overestimate the proportion of people in a crowd who are observing them. It was hypothesized that any potential overestimation would be modulated by self-focused attention. METHOD: Forty-eight high and 48 low socially anxious participants performed a "faces in a crowd" computer task during which they briefly saw

Cause-specific mortality among HIV-infected individuals, by CD4(+) cell count at HAART initiation, compared with HIV-uninfected individuals.

OBJECTIVES: To compare the proportion, timing and hazards of non-AIDS death and AIDS death among men and women who initiated HAART at different CD4 cell counts to mortality risks of HIV-uninfected persons with similar risk factors. DESIGN: Prospective cohort studies. METHODS: We used parametric mixture models to compare proportions of AIDS and non-AIDS mortality and ages at death, and multivariable Cox models to compare cause-specific hazards of mortality, across levels of CD4 cell count at HAART initiation (≤200 cells/μl: 'late', 201-350 cells/μl: 'intermediate', >350 cells/μl: 'early') and

In patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, metabolically abnormal individuals are at a higher risk for mortality while metabolically normal individuals are not.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a common cause of chronic liver disease and is strongly associated with metabolic syndrome. The aim of this study is to compare the clinical profile and long-term outcome in NAFLD patients with or without metabolic syndrome. METHODS: The initial cohort (N=6709) was identified from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey-III (NHANES III, 1988-94) data. Laboratory profiles, body measurement examinations, and mortality data were linked to self-reported questionnaires of demographic and health risk information. NAFLD was de

Brain activity related to individuated finger movement demonstrated by simultaneous motion capture and fMRI.

INTRODUCTION: The ability to move fingers independently is essential for skilled hand use and relies on both biomechanical constraints and neural control. This study analysed finger independence and associated brain activation during individuated finger movements using simultaneous recordings of 3D kinematics and functional MRI. METHOD: Twenty-five right-handed persons (age 62.3 ± 8.2 years) performed flexion-extension movements with individual fingers repeated for each hand during fMRI acquisition. Finger independence was quantified using a 3D motion capture-based Individuation Index (II), a…

Individualized Theta Transcranial Alternating Current Stimulation Modulates Mnemonic Discrimination and ERP Responses to Positive Information in Individuals With Elevated Depressive Symptoms.

Individuals with elevated depressive symptoms often show impairments in positive memory processing. This randomized, double-blind study investigated whether individualized theta-frequency transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) using an OFC-oriented montage modulates mnemonic discrimination and ERP responses to positive information. Sixty-one individuals with elevated depressive symptoms received either real or sham stimulation before completing an emotional mnemonic discrimination task. Behavioral results showed that lure discrimination increased following real stimulation but not

Molecular alterations in human olfactory mucosal cells from healthy individuals and individuals with Alzheimer's disease induced by real-world ambient air.

Ambient air pollution is a global problem linked to various diseases, including neurodegenerative disorders. Using a mobile exposure system, we investigated the molecular changes in human olfactory cleft mucosal (hOM) cells from healthy individuals and Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients exposed to real-world ambient air. Samples were exposed at the air-liquid interface in a low-pollution Background site and a moderately polluted (within recommended limits) Industrial site. We assessed immune response-related molecules, lipid peroxidation and global RNA expression. Leukemia-inhibitory factor (LI

Use of processed nerve allograft to relieve pain and restore function in individuals with painful upper limb neuroma-a case series of five individuals.

INTRODUCTION: A traumatic nerve injury that is improperly treated or left untreated may result in a painful neuroma with compromised sensory and motor function. Affected individuals might be hesitant to donate a healthy nerve for an autologous nerve graft procedure. The use of processed nerve allografts (PNA) to reconstruct nerve injuries with painful neuromas is less often discussed. We aim to offer perspectives on treating painful neuromas with PNA when autograft reconstruction is considered not an option. METHODS: This series involves five individuals with neuroma formation and varying pai

Comparative Evaluation of Candida albicans at Two Oral Sites in Healthy Individuals and Individuals With or Without Diabetes With Chronic Periodontitis: A Cross-Sectional Study.

INTRODUCTION: There is a synergistic and dysbiotic dental plaque microbial community with a keystone pathogen, Porphyromonas gingivalis, initiating the disruption of tissue homeostasis. The pathogenic organisms of periodontitis have been found to interact with other commensal species, such as fungi, of which Candida albicans has been found in the subgingival area, adding a new dimension to periodontal pathogenesis. Periodontitis and Candida infections are common complications seen in immunocompromised patients such as diabetics. AIM: This study aimed to detect the presence and distribution of

Sexual Consent as a Continuous Process in a Sexually Diverse Sample: Women and Bisexual Individuals Are Less Sexually Coercive Than Men and Heterosexual Individuals.

In recent years, there has been growing interest in the study of sexual consent, particularly among diverse sexual samples, including from a gender perspective. The concept and definition of sexual consent are evolving from a static, general, and pre-sexual activity issue to a dynamic process that must be present throughout the entire sexual encounter. Therefore, it is necessary to use instruments that consider this dimension, and to adapt and validate them for diverse languages and cultures to facilitate the replication of quantitative studies. The objective of the present research was twofol

Expression of activity-regulated transcripts in pyramidal neurons across the cortical visuospatial working memory network in unaffected comparison individuals and individuals with schizophrenia.

Visuospatial working memory (vsWM), which is impaired in schizophrenia (SZ), is mediated by multiple cortical regions including the primary (V1) and association (V2) visual, posterior parietal (PPC) and dorsolateral prefrontal (DLPFC) cortices. In these regions, parvalbumin (PV) or somatostatin (SST) GABA neurons are altered in SZ as reflected in lower levels of activity-regulated transcripts. As PV and SST neurons receive excitatory inputs from neighboring pyramidal neurons, we hypothesized that levels of activity-regulated transcripts are also lower in pyramidal neurons in these regions. Heart rate variability during head-up tilt shows inter-individual differences among healthy individuals of extreme Prakriti types.

Autonomic modulation is critical during various physiological activities, including orthostatic stimuli and primarily evaluated by heart rate variability (HRV). Orthostatic stress affects people differently suggesting the possibility of identification of predisposed groups to autonomic dysfunction-related disorders in a healthy state. One way to understand this kind of variability is by using Ayurvedic approach that classifies healthy individuals into Prakriti types based on clinical phenotypes. To this end, we explored the differential response to orthostatic stress in different Prakriti type

Head and neck squamous cell cancers in the United States are rare and the risk now is higher among white individuals compared with black individuals.

BACKGROUND: The increasing incidence of oropharyngeal squamous cell cancer (OPSCC) is well established. However, up-to-date incidence estimates and trends for head and neck squamous cell cancers (HNSCCs) overall, including major anatomic sites, and nonoropharyngeal (non-OP) HNSCCs by sex, race, and age in the United States are not well described. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of incident HNSCCs during 1992 through 2014 using the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database was performed to evaluate the incidence of HNSCCs overall, OPSCC, and non-OP HNSCC (those of the larynx, oral

Patch test dose-response study: polysensitized individuals do not express lower elicitation thresholds than single/double-sensitized individuals.

BACKGROUND: It is not known if reduced elicitation thresholds are evident among polysensitized individuals when using allergens to which the patients are already sensitized. Reduced elicitation thresholds may be an expression of increased reactivity in this patient group. OBJECTIVES: To examine and compare elicitation dose-response curves and elicitation thresholds in a polysensitized vs. a single/double-sensitized group for allergens to which the test subjects were already sensitized. PATIENTS/METHODS: Fifty-one patients (13 polysensitized and 38 single/double-sensitized) were patch tested
