Baclofen is used for the treatment of post-traumatic spasticity. It carries a risk of overdose as well as of an acute withdrawal syndrome. We report two cases of severe hypertonia and hyperthermia (> 42 degrees C), occurring after accidental discontinuation of intrathecal infusion of baclofen. Both hypertonia and hyperthermia ceased when administration of baclofen was resumed. Delivery of levodopa or other dopaminergic agents to the striatum is a critical determinant of the clinical response and may account for many of the fluctations in response ("on-off"). This should be manageable with innovative delivery systems for the drugs. However further studies are required to determine if continuous dopaminergic stimulation will be complicated by increased levels of drug metabolites or down regulation of dopaminergic neurotransmission.

This retrospective study of 31 pediatric oncology patients with subcutaneously implanted infusion devices details the required care and demonstrates the benefits and complications of the system. We assessed the effects of an axial flow left ventricular assist device (LVAD) upon aortic valve opening, pump outflow, and biologic and hematologic parameters when operated in intermittent low speed (ILS) mode. An ILS controller equipped Jarvik 2000 LVAD was implanted in six calves. OBJECT: Hydrocephalus results from abnormal cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) volumes or flow patterns. The absorption of CSF is determined largely by pressures within veins and venous sinuses in the head and adjacent to the spine. Most surgical solutions for hydrocephalus involve diversion of excess CSF into alternative absorption sites, and most of these solutions are still suboptimal. The aim of this study was to investigate the antihypertensive properties of cis-[Ru(bpy)2ImN(NO)]3+ (FOR0811) in normotensive and in Nω-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME)-induced hypertensive rats. Vasorelaxant effects were analyzed by performing concentration response curve to FOR0811 in rat aortic rings in the absence or presence of 1H-[1,2,4]-oxadiazolo-[4,3,-a]quinoxalin-1-one (ODQ), L-cysteine or hydroxocobalamin. Normotensive and L-NAME-hypertensive rats were treated with FOR0811 and the effects in blood pressure and heart rate variability in the frequency domain (HRV) were followed.
