The increase of population of biting S. damnosum s.l. at a breeding site situated within the Onchocerciasis Control Programme area of West Africa following a temporary cessation of insecticidal treatments was studied by making every day collections on human bait at five catching sites and for 2--3 days per week at seven others, between 17 January and 9 April 1977. Observations on pupal and larval densities, water and air temperatures, relative humidity and water level were also made. The results showed that there was an interval of 23 days between the last application of insecticide and the ap

BACKGROUND: The spotted wing Drosophila, Drosophila suzukii (Matsumura, 1931) (Diptera: Drosophilidae), is an invasive pest of small-fruit crops. Unlike most other Drosophila, this insect is able to oviposit into and damage ripe and ripening fruit, making it unmarketable. Because this is a new pest in the United States, it is necessary to identify registered insecticides to manage this insect effectively in conventional and organic production systems.
RESULTS: The present laboratory bioassays and field trials identified a number of insecticides representing various modes of action that are ef

Dung invertebrate colonization and degradation levels of faeces from cattle treated with endectocides were studied. Faeces of control and doramectin (DRM) (subcutaneous) and moxidectin (MXD) (subcutaneous and topical) treated animals were deposited on the field from 3 to 21 days post-treatment (pt). Pats were recovered after 6 to 42 days post-deposition (pd). Faecal weight, dry matter, arthropods number, and drugs concentrations were determined. Total arthropods number was higher in control (P<0.0001) than in the other groups from days 3 to 21 pt. Total number of insects recovered on days 3, 1

Maize is a critical staple crop, yet postharvest losses largely due to inadequate storage packages remain a significant issue in Tain District, Bono Region, Ghana. In the present study, different storage packages (treatments): hermetic bags, nylon sacks, and jute sacks (all stacked on wooden pallets) compared with unpackaged maize (maize stored on a lightweight corn tarp elevated on a wooden pallet) effect on postharvest quality of maize was investigated to address critical postharvest losses that threaten food security. Laboratory analysis examined insect damage, physical and nutritional qual

The stink bug, Eocanthecona furcellata Wolff (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) shows significant promise as a biological control agent against lepidopteran pests in tropical and subtropical areas. However, securing suitable food remains a persistent issue for the mass rearing of this beneficial insect. To understand how different feeding strategies impact reproductive success, we evaluated their effects on critical life table parameters and ovary development using a range of feeding options: natural prey Spodoptera litura Fabricius (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) and Spodoptera exigua Hubner, alternative pre

The brown planthopper (Nilaparvata lugens) has a high reproductive rate, posing a significant challenge to biological control of rice pests. This is largely due to the physiological and functional traits of its telotrophic ovarioles, which feature a centralized nutrient supply to ensure each oocyte obtains essential basic nutrients. Current studies on insect ovarioles primarily focus on hormonal regulation and gene expression; the cellular composition and spatial relationships within N. lugens ovariole tissues remain poorly understood. To illustrate the internal architecture of ovarioles and t

Tsetse flies are major vectors of African trypanosomiasis, with devastating medical and veterinary consequences in sub-Saharan region of Africa. Insect repellents are promising tool for control of tsetse flies in the region. A four-component tsetse-repellent blend (δ-nonalactone, heptanoic acid, 4-methylguaiacol and geranyl acetone) previously formulated and optimized was encapsulated in β-cyclodextrin for a slow controlled release. Here, we explored various methods of microencapsulating (kneading, co-precipitation, heating or freeze-drying) tsetse fly repellent blend in β-cyclodextrin nanopar

Myiasis is an infestation of human tissue by insect larvae. While rare, healthcare-associated myiasis has been reported from immobilized patients in resource-limited healthcare facilities in warm climates without adequate vector control measures. We describe a case of Ophthalmomyiasis in a hospitalized neonate in Botswana that resulted in vision loss. The neonate, who was initially hospitalized due to the complications of prematurity, received phototherapy for jaundice, and to avoid phototherapy-related retinopathy, the neonate's eyes were covered using cotton gauze and adhesive tapes that pot

Aphids are major insect pests of cereal crops, acting as virus vectors as well as causing direct damage. The responses of wheat to infestation by cereal aphid (Sitobion avenae) were investigated in a proteomic analysis. Approximately, 500 protein spots were reproducibly detected in the extracts from leaves of wheat seedlings after extraction and 2-DE. Sixty-seven spots differed significantly between control and infested plants following 24 h of aphid feeding, with 27 and 11 up-regulated, and 8 and 21 down-regulated, in local or systemic tissues, respectively. After 8 days, 80 protein spots dif

The insect steroid hormone, 20-hydroxyecdysone (20E), is a key factor controlling critical developmental events of embryogenesis, larval molting, metamorphosis, and, in some insects, reproduction. We are interested in understanding the molecular basis of the steroid hormone ecdysone action in insect egg development. The yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti, in addition to being an important vector of human diseases, represents an outstanding model for studying molecular mechanisms underlying egg maturation due to stringently controlled, blood meal-activated reproductive events in this insect.

The sterile insect technique (SIT) is a well-established and environmentally benign method for population control. Identifying genes that regulate insect fertility while preserving growth and development is crucial for implementing a novel SIT-based pest management approach utilizing CRISPR/Cas9 to target these genes for genetic manipulation. Tektin (TEKT), an essential alpha-helical protein pivotal in sperm formation due to its role in cilia and flagella assembly, has garnered attention. In this study, we identified 7 TEKT genes in the testis of Cydia pomonella, a globally invasive fruit pest

The present study aimed to evaluate the toxic and biological effects of some extracts of seagrasses (Cymodocea rotundata; Halophila ovata& Thalassia hemprichii) against Aedes aegypti, which transmits dengue fever, and Culex pipiens, which is the dominant species of mosquitoes in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, as a safe method for its control. The cumulative death rate during larval development into pupae and adults was used as a criterion for evaluating tested seaweed extracts against Ae. aegypti, Cx. Pipiens. According to the obtained IC50 values (the concentration that inhibits the exit of 5

Mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) and tsetse flies (Diptera: Glossinidae) are bloodsucking vectors of human and animal pathogens. Mosquito-borne diseases (malaria, filariasis, dengue, zika, and chikungunya) cause severe mortality and morbidity annually, and tsetse fly-borne diseases (African trypanosomes causing sleeping sickness in humans and nagana in livestock) cost Sub-Saharan Africa an estimated US$ 4750 million annually. Current reliance on insecticides for vector control is unsustainable: due to increasing insecticide resistance and growing concerns about health and environmental impacts

Preschool and school-aged children from a small area of rural Jamaica were examined in an attempt to assess the epidemiologic factors predisposing certain persons to pyoderma. Twenty-three children were included in the affected group; their disease consisted of secondarily infected insect bites or infestations as well as primary pyoderma. The control group was composed of twenty-three children who had no evidence of infected skin disease. Comparison of the two groups revealed a significant difference in the socioeconomic status of the control and study groups. There was no statistically signif

BACKGROUND: The sterile insect technique (SIT) is a population suppression strategy that involves releasing sterile male insects, which mate with wild females, thereby inducing sterility in the target population. Although SIT represents a promising complementary approach for malaria vector control, its success depends on identifying an irradiation dose that ensures high sterility while preserving the biological performance of males. This study aimed to determine the optimal irradiation dose for sterilizing Anopheles coluzzii, a major malaria vector in West Africa, under laboratory conditions i

A 3-yr field study quantified the compensatory ability of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) to preflower fruit damage by Lygus hesperus Knight in the Texas High Plains under limited irrigation. Experiments were designed to achieve varying levels of preflower fruit loss by augmenting Lygus bug populations using nymphal bugs reared in a laboratory colony. Treatments included 1) three bugs per plant (3PP), 2) one bug per plant (1PP), 3) naturally occurring background bug density or untreated control (NC), and 4) 0 bugs achieved through insecticide spray applications (SC). Lygus release treatments (3

BACKGROUND: Buruli ulcer is an infectious disease involving the skin, caused by Mycobacterium ulcerans. Its exact transmission mechanism remains unknown. Several arguments indicate a possible role for insects in its transmission. A previous case-control study in the Nyong valley region in central Cameroon showed an unexpected association between bed net use and protection against Buruli ulcer. We investigated whether this association persisted in a newly discovered endemic Buruli ulcer focus in Bankim, northwestern Cameroon.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We conducted a case-control study on

The chemical composition of plant surfaces plays a role in selection of host plants by herbivorous insects. Once the insect reaches the plant, these cues determine host acceptance. Laboratory studies have shown that the stem borer Busseola fusca (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), an important pest of sorghum and maize in sub-Saharan Africa, is able to differentiate between host and non-host plant species. However, no information is available on the cues used by this insect to seek and accept the host plant. Thus, the role of surface phytochemical stimuli on host selection and oviposition by B. fusca wa

BACKGROUND: Leishmaniasis is one of the most diverse and complex of all vector-borne diseases worldwide. It is caused by parasites of the genus Leishmania, obligate intramacrophage protists characterised by diversity and complexity. Its most severe form is visceral leishmaniasis (VL), a systemic disease that is fatal if left untreated. In Latin America VL is caused by Leishmania infantum chagasi and transmitted by Lutzomyia longipalpis. This phlebotomine sandfly is only found in the New World, from Mexico to Argentina. In South America, migration and urbanisation have largely contributed to th

The reliance on blood is a limiting factor for mass rearing of mosquitoes for Sterile-Insect-Technique (SIT) and other mosquito-based control strategies. To solve this problem, we have developed SkitoSnack, a formulated diet for Aedes aegypti (L) mosquitoes, as an alternative for vertebrate blood. Here we addressed the question if long-term yellow fever mosquito culture with SkitoSnack resulted in changed life history traits and fitness of the offspring compared to blood-raised mosquitoes. We also explored if SkitoSnack is suitable to raise Asian tiger mosquitos, Aedes albopictus (L.), and the
