The exploration of the fetal digestive tract is not systematized and the ends (thoracic oesophagus and anorectal area) are often excluded from the examination excluded from screening. Only the foetal digestive pathology of liquid expression (digestive obstruction, digestive duplication) is easily detected. The most frequent digestive pathologies (oesophagus atresia, anorectal malformation) are still very often a neonatal discovery. With echography or MRI, the antenatal analysis of the digestive tract is optimized by the acquisition of coronal (thoracic oesophagus, small intestine, and colon) a

Congenital tufting enteropathy (CTE) is a rare and severe enteropathy recently ascribed to mutations in the epcam gene. Here we establish SPINT2, previously ascribed to congenital sodium diarrhea, as a second gene associated with CTE and report molecular and immunohistochemistry data in 57 CTE patients. Inclusion criteria were early onset diarrhea and intestinal insufficiency with the typical histological CTE abnormalities. The clinical phenotype was registered, the entire coding regions of epcam and SPINT2 sequenced, and immunostaining of EpCAM and SPINT2 performed on intestinal biopsies. An

OBJECTIVE: Infants requiring intestinal resection because of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) or small bowel atresia (SBA) may benefit from mucous fistula refeeding (MFR) of enterostomy output to improve nutrition and bowel adaptation before reanastomosis. Previous series demonstrated improved outcomes with MFR but did not account for varied patient characteristics as potential sources of bias. We performed a cohort analysis using multivariable adjusted models to compare outcomes of patients with and without MFR.
METHODS: Retrospective chart review was performed for patients with NEC or SBA an

PURPOSE: Gastroschisis (GS) is defined as a full-thickness abdominal wall defect (usually right-sided) with intestinal prolapse and occasionally other viscera. The defect itself may close around the viscera causing exit or entry level intestinal atresia and ischaemia or midgut infarction, previously described as closed GS. We now report the largest series of infants born with various stages of closing GS describing features, management, and outcome.
METHODS: The study used a single-centre retrospective review of infants with GS and evidence of defect closure at birth.
RESULTS: Nine infants (…

BACKGROUND: Meconium peritonitis (MP) is a sterile, chemical peritonitis resulting from in-utero fetal bowel perforation. Severe cases may lead to serious morbidities and mortalities.
OBJECTIVE: To review the common antenatal ultrasound abnormalities associated with MP, and identify radiological and clinical prognostic factors.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective review of all neonates with MP from January 1997 to December 2019 treated in our hospital was performed. Antenatal ultrasound findings, clinical presentations and outcomes were analyzed.
RESULTS: Thirty-five neonates (17 males, 18

All of the anastomotic techniques used for jejuno-ileal atresia aim to overcome the size discrepancy between the resected bowel ends, lessen anastomotic complication and prevent development of short bowel syndrome. Aim of study was to evaluate the outcomes of end-to-side oblique anastomosis for jejuno-ileal atresia and verifying the risk factors for complications. A prospective study was conducted on patients with jejuno-ileal atresia managed by end-to-side oblique anastomotic technique over a 7-year period. Data were collected and analyzed to evaluate the outcomes of this surgical technique a

Duodenal atresia is a common cause of neonatal bowel obstruction. Double duodenal atresia has been reported as a rare variation of duodenal atresia. This report discusses the importance of an appreciation of unusual anatomy in neonatal duodenal obstruction and highlights the importance of assessing bowel continuity intraoperatively.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Cholestasis occurs frequently in patients with small bowel atresia (SBA) and is often attributed to prolonged parental nutrition. When severe or prolonged, patients may undergo unnecessary intensive or invasive investigation. We characterized cholestasis and analyzed the pertinence of investigating this patient population.
METHODS: With Research Ethics Board approval, patients with SBA between 1996 and 2005 were retrospectively reviewed. Demographics, location of atresia, operative findings, complications, investigations, resumption of feeding, duration of prolonged parent

Meconium pseudocyst results from a loculated inflammation occurring in response to spillage of meconium into the peritoneal cavity after a bowel perforation. Certain cystic lesions, such as abscesses and dermoid and epidermoid cysts, are known to show reduced water diffusion on DWI. MRI has recently become a valuable adjunct to ultrasonography for fetal gastrointestinal anomalies. Complementary to ultrasonography, prenatal MRI can help further characterize the lesion and can clearly demonstrate the anatomical relationship between the lesion and adjacent organs. We report a case of meconium pse

Chronic renal failure remain the most significant cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with anorectal malformation. The urological anomalies associated with anorectal malformations are not only anatomical, but also functional, the latter being related to congenital neurovesical dysfunction. The neurovesical dysfunction found in children with anorectal malformations results from a possible association with spinal dysraphism. The authors carried out urodynamic evaluation on 6 patients operated on for anorectal malformation by posterior sagittal anorectoplasty. 3 children had normal bladd

Fifteen cases of meconium ileus (MI) were treated between 1986 and 1995; 7 responded to conservative treatment. Eight were operated upon, and comprise the study group. Six of the operated babies had no complications; 1 had meconium peritonitis with a pseudocyst and small-bowel atresia, and 1 had a volvulus of a small-bowel segment with necrosis. In all 8 cases a T-tube (TT) was left via an enterotomy; in the complicated cases the enterotomy was pre-anastomotic. The obstruction was relieved in all the babies, without any stoma or bowel resection in the uncomplicated cases. Two complications occ

Neonatal obstruction is a radio-clinical syndrome, common to a wide range of malformative anomalies which alter the normal anatomy or function of the digestive tract at any level. The main etiologies are reviewed with emphasis on specificity due to embryology, topography and clinical presentation. It is relatively easy to diagnose neonatal obstruction and relate it to a definite cause. The successful treatment of such obstruction requires a pluridisciplinary collaboration of specialized teams.

The macroscopic and microscopic findings in 12 cases of stenosis and/or atresia of the jejunum and ileum are presented. There was considerable uniformity within the series with overlapping of cases of atresia, stenosis, and gut infarction. An analysis of associated lesions in cases coming to necropsy suggests that the infants were suffering from shock. In nine out of the 12 cases there was evidence of intrapartum asphyxia and in eight cases evidence of retardation of intrauterine growth. It is argued that, since many of the associated complications of pregnancy are known to be of importance in
