Bilharzial polyposis of the rectum and sigmoid colon.

The case is reported of a 10-year-old boy who had severe diarrhoea with blood and muscus for 1 year which was found to be due to bilharzial polyposis of the rectum and sigmoid colon. He was treated first with antibilharzial drugs. Later, because of multiple polyps and secondary infection, local surgical resection was performed.

Laparoscopic resection of sigmoid colon cancer with intestinal malrotation: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Intestinal malrotation is a congenital abnormality which occurs due to a failure of the normal 270° rotation of the midgut. The non-rotation type is usually asymptomatic and discovered incidentally on imaging studies. Intestinal malrotation accompanied by colon cancer is extremely rare. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 53-year-old male presented with postprandial abdominal discomfort. Colonoscopy showed a 14mm polyp in the sigmoid colon and endoscopic polypectomy was performed. Pathological evaluation revealed an adenocarcinoma invading the submucosa more than 1000μm with positive vertic

[Intussusception owing to pathologic lead points in children: report of 27 cases].

OBJECTIVE: Intussusception owing to pathologic lead points is a challenging condition for pediatric surgeons. The aim of this study was to review the particularities of clinical presentation, the place of morphologic investigation in depicting the presence of an organic lesion and the management of secondary intussusception. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The authors report a series of 27 patients treated from 1986 to 2004, for secondary intussusception. RESULTS: Nineteen boys and 8 girls, aged from 45 days to 11 years (mean age: 40 months) presented with secondary intussusception: Meckel's diverticu

[Diagnostic utility of capsule endoscopy in occult gastrointestinal bleeding].

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The video-capsule endoscopy (CE) of the small intestine is a novel innovative procedure for outpatient use that can detect even small lesions of the mucosa of the small intestine. Aim of this retrospective clinical study was to evaluate the diagnostic value of CE in a clinical routine setting. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between July 2001 and October 2002 we investigated 42 patients with suspected gastrointestinal bleeding by CE. In all patients, the previous upper and lower endoscopy work-up was normal. In some cases additional procedures such as bloodpool scintigraphy, a

Segmental dilatation of the ileum as an unusual cause of gastrointestinal bleeding: report of one case.

We report a case of segmental dilatation of the ileum in a 10-month-old male infant. Intermittent loose black-colored stool passage and normocytic anemia were noted at the initial visits to our hospital. There was no symptom or sign of intestinal obstruction such as abdominal distention or vomiting. On physical examination, he was found to be pale but his abdomen was soft and flat. Digital examination revealed brownish stool tinged with black-colored oil-like stool but no polyp. Laboratory studies excluded coagulopathy, hemolytic anemia and lead poisoning. During hospitalization, he was treate

Endoscopic Mucosal Resection of a Large Rectal Juvenile Polyp in a 7-Year-Old Child: A Case Report.

Pediatric hematochezia is a frequent clinical symptom that often poses a diagnostic challenge for gastroenterologists. This study presented the case of a 7-year-old female patient with a one-year history of intermittent hematochezia. Due to the painless nature of the bleeding, the condition was initially misdiagnosed as internal hemorrhoids by several clinics, leading to a year of ineffective conservative management. Upon admission via the emergency department, a comprehensive diagnostic workup was initiated. An abdominal contrast-enhanced three-dimensional computed tomography (3D CT) scan was

Filiform polyposis in a patient without inflammatory bowel disease.

Filiform polyposis is a rare condition of uncertain pathogenesis that is usually found in patients with a history of inflammatory bowel disease. Here I report a case of filiform polyposis with no associated inflammatory bowel disease. Numerous finger-like polypoid lesions with the appearance of stalactites were noted in the transverse colon at the time of colonoscopy. Filiform polyps may be misinterpreted on colonoscopy as unusual villous adenomas or small carcinomas. Endoscopists should be familiar with the varied morphology of filifform polypsis in order to arrive at a correct diagnosis, and

Hybrid transanal endoscopic microsurgery: a novel approach to rectal neoplasm excision.

AIM: Rectal neoplasm excision is a challenging issue in gastrointestinal endoscopy and surgery. This technical note describes a hybrid method for the excision of challenging rectal neoplasms. METHOD: The procedure consists of the combined use of classic endoscopy and transanal endoscopic microsurgical instrumentation for full-thickness removal of a recurrent rectal polyp in a patient who had previously undergone endoscopic excision of a Tis rectal adenocarcinoma, located behind the valve of Houston and 9 cm from the anal verge. RESULTS: The lesion was removed completely in 50 min with no ope

Adult intussusception secondary to inflammatory fibroid polyp: demonstration by MRI.

Adult intussusception secondary to inflammatory polyp occurs rarely. Imaging of intussusception on ultrasound, CT and MRI has been previously described. In this report we describe a case of an adult intussusception secondary to inflammatory fibroid polyp. Both the lead point (inflammatory fibroid polyp) and intussusception were depicted on multiplanar MR images. Findings on MRI were confirmed at surgery and histopathological examination.
