Two species of kestrel, the common and lesser, were caught each month at three geographically defined locations in Israel over a 12-month period, and a total of 306 blood samples were examined for West Nile virus neutralizing antibodies. The prevalences and mean antibody titers were analyzed statistically by the multiple linear regression model and were shown to be significantly affected by two of the independent variables, location and age of the bird. This is a surveillance study of the antimicrobial resistance of the S. flexneri group in the context of its serotype diversity. This report describes molecular analysis of the MECP2 gene in 37 Israeli patients suspected of having Rett syndrome (RTT). The patients were from various Jewish ethnic groups and from Arabic origin. During the summer of 2000, 35 patients with West Nile Virus Fever were admitted to our hospital. Of these, the 26 (21 adults, mean age 56 (19-86) and 5 children (aged 9-15)) presented have neurological involvement, 33% with meningitis, 52% with meningoencephalitis, 10% with encephalitis and 5% with acute polyneuropathy. Bacterial meningitis remains a serious cause of morbidity and mortality in childhood. We report 3 year data on meningitis caused by Haemophilus influenzae b, Streptococcus pneumoniae and Neisseria meningitidis in Israeli children younger than 13 years of age. Data from a study on malignant ovarian tumors in pregnancy in Israel are presented. During the 25-year period of the survey, 23 new cases of malignant ovarian tumors during pregnancy were diagnosed, representing an incidence of 0.12/100,000 females over the age of 14; over half of the patients were in their third decade of life at the time of diagnosis of the tumor. Five cases of leptospirosis among dairy farmers in the Valley of Jezreel are described. The disease was caused by leptospirae of serotype hardjo and available epidemiological evidence suggested infection due to contact with cows. This is the first time that Leptospira hardjo has been isolated and identified in Israel. Infection with L. hardjo should be regarded as a significant occupational risk and this strain should be included in the group of antigens used for screening sera for leptospira antibodies in Israel.
