[The language of children and young people with 22q11 deletion syndrome].

INTRODUCTION: The 22q11 deletion syndrome (S22q11) is one of the most prevalent genetic disorders, resulting in multiple systemic and neuropsychological features. AIM: To describe the language profile in a sample of Spanish subjects with S22q11. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A sample of 30 Spanish participants with S22q11 aged between 5 years and 21 years and 11 months (mean: 12.14 ± 4.20 years) was evaluated using standardized tests and a questionnaire administered to parents. RESULTS: Almost half of the subjects obtained better results in expressive language than in comprehensive language and the…

Language, speech, and oromotor function in children with Pompe disease.

Advances in the treatment of Pompe disease have improved life expectancy and quality of life, but speech and oromotor function remain significantly affected. The purpose of this study was to expand on existing data and present new findings of speech acoustic and physiologic outcomes in Pompe disease. A retrospective analysis was carried out on results of speech, language and oromotor tests carried out in 14 children diagnosed with Pompe disease. The assessment battery included standardized tests of language, picture naming, maximum performance tests, and oromotor resistance tasks. Speech produ…

The speech, language and communication needs of rough sleepers in London.

BACKGROUND: There is very little awareness of the speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) of rough sleepers. The small amount of documentation that does exist involves a wider group of homeless adults (not just rough sleepers), and reports that communication needs are an area of concern. AIMS: To investigate: (1) the reported prevalence of SLCN amongst UK nationals recorded on the Combined Homeless and Information Network (CHAIN) as sleeping on the streets of London; (2) whether rough sleepers with reported SLCN differ from those without; and (3) what factors best predict patterns of …

Speech and language development in children with 49,XXXXY syndrome.

49,XXXXY is the rarest X and Y chromosomal variation and is frequently characterized by expressive and receptive language dysfunction, low muscle tonus, and intellectual deficits. Due to the low incidence of this disorder, comprehensive studies analyzing the specific aspects of the speech and language phenotype in these boys have been uncommon. This is the first in-depth investigation of the speech and language profiles in a large cohort of boys with 49,XXXXY. Based on the clinical judgment of speech and language pathologists, there was an increased incidence (91.8%) of Childhood Apraxia of Sp…

Sensory Modality-Independent Activation of the Brain Network for Language.

The meaning of a sentence can be understood, whether presented in written or spoken form. Therefore, it is highly probable that brain processes supporting language comprehension are at least partly independent of sensory modality. To identify where and when in the brain language processing is independent of sensory modality, we directly compared neuromagnetic brain signals of 200 human subjects (102 males) either reading or listening to sentences. We used multiset canonical correlation analysis to align individual subject data in a way that boosts those aspects of the signal that are common to…

Mapping language dominance through the lens of the Wada test.

The sodium amytal test, or Wada test, named after Juhn Wada, has remained a pillar of presurgical planning and is used to identify the laterality of the dominant language and memory areas in the brain. What is perhaps less well known is that the original intent of the test was to abort seizure activity from an affected hemisphere and also to protect that hemisphere from the effects of electroconvulsive treatment. Some 80 years after Paul Broca described the frontal operculum as an essential area of expressive language and well before the age of MRI, Wada used the test to determine language dom…

Evaluation of a tracheostomy education programme for speech-language therapists.

BACKGROUND: Tracheostomy management is considered an area of advanced practice for speech-language therapists (SLTs) internationally. Infrequent exposure and limited access to specialist SLTs are barriers to competency development. AIMS: To evaluate the benefits of postgraduate tracheostomy education programme for SLTs working with children and adults. METHODS & PROCEDURES: A total of 35 SLTs participated in the programme, which included a 1-day tracheostomy simulation-based workshop. Before the workshop, SLTs took an online knowledge quiz and then completed a theory package. The workshop co…

The embodiment of language in tremor-dominant Parkinson's disease patients.

According to embodied cognition, processing language with motor content involves a simulation of this content by the brain motor system. Patients with brain lesions involving the motor system are characterized by deficits in action verbs processing in the absence of dementia. We sought to assess whether action verbs interfere with the motor behavior of patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) having tremor dominant symptoms. PD tremor is considered to result from dysfunction of cortical-subcortical motor circuits driven by dopamine depletion. In addition, PD tremor is reduced during active movem…

Speech, Language, and Communication Skills of Adolescents With Craniofacial Microsomia.

Purpose Youth with craniofacial microsomia (CFM) have anomalies and comorbidities that increase their risk for speech, language, and communication deficits. We examined these outcomes in youth with and without CFM and explored differences as a function of CFM phenotype and hearing status. Method Participants included youth ages 11-17 years with CFM (n = 107) and demographically similar controls (n = 306). We assessed speech intelligibility, articulation, receptive and expressive language, and parent and teacher report measures of communication. Hearing status was also screened at the study vis…

Distributional Cues to Language Learning in Children With Intellectual Disabilities.

PURPOSE: In typical development, distributional cues-patterns in input-are related to language acquisition processes. Statistical and implicit learning refer to the utilization of such cues. In children with intellectual disability, much less is known about the extent to which distributional cues are harnessed in mechanisms of language learning. METHOD: This tutorial presents what is known about the process of language learning in children with language impairments associated with different sources of intellectual disability: Williams syndrome, autism spectrum disorder, Down syndrome, and fra…

The Impact of Dysphonic Voices on Children's Comprehension of Spoken Language.

BACKGROUND: This study investigated the effect of teachers' dysphonic voices on children's listening comprehension. METHODS: One hundred thirty-four grade three and four students were recruited from local primary schools in Hong Kong. They were required to listen to six passages, three in Cantonese and three in English, which were either read in normal, mildly dysphonic, or severely dysphonic voices. The students were required to complete six multiple-choice comprehension questions upon listening to each passage. Comprehension performance across languages, dysphonic severities, genders, and q…

The growth of language: Universal Grammar, experience, and principles of computation.

Human infants develop language remarkably rapidly and without overt instruction. We argue that the distinctive ontogenesis of child language arises from the interplay of three factors: domain-specific principles of language (Universal Grammar), external experience, and properties of non-linguistic domains of cognition including general learning mechanisms and principles of efficient computation. We review developmental evidence that children make use of hierarchically composed structures ('Merge') from the earliest stages and at all levels of linguistic organization. At the same time, longitud…

Physiotherapy and Speech and Language therapy intervention for chronic cough.

There are few effective pharmacological therapies available to treat refractory chronic cough. Functional MRI studies of the brain have recently shown that patients with chronic cough have dysfunctional inhibitory control of cough. Self-management therapies delivered by physiotherapists or speech therapists are effective at suppressing cough. They enable patients to consciously suppress the urge to cough. The intervention consists of education, laryngeal hygiene, cough suppression and distraction measures and behaviour modification. The efficacy of Physiotherapy and Speech And Language Interve…
