Laser-assisted uvula-palatoplasty (LAUP) is a new and effective surgical method for the elimination of habitual snoring. LAUP is safely performed under local anesthesia in the office, and it provides progressive enlargement of the oropharyngeal air space by reshaping and restructuring the uvula, soft palate, and pharyngeal pillars utilizing the CO2 laser with special attachments. A 68-year-old man presented with an endobronchial lesion and was subsequently found to have a plasmacytoma. After systemic involvement with multiple myeloma was ruled out, a diagnosis of extramedullary plasmacytoma was made. The diagnosis and treatment of extramedullary plasmacytoma is discussed with specific attention to the new role of laser therapy in this disease.

The authors present three case reports showing the efficacy of laser surgery in performing partial nephrectomies in children who had bilateral Wilms' tumors and duplicated systems with obstructed nonfunctioning upper pole moieties. Using both the KTP laser (for cutting) and the YAG laser (for coagulation of large vessels) allows for fast removal of kidney tissue, with minimal blood loss and minimal loss of renal parenchyma.

Rhinophyma, an excessive hyperplasia of the sebaceous glands of the nose, results in disfigurement, occasional nasal blockage and recurrent infection. We present a case of a glans penis hemangioma. These lesions are extremely rare, and as a consequence there is controversy concerning their treatment and outcome. Our patient was treated with a neodymium:YAG laser irradiation, with complete morphological recuperation. To our knowledge this is the first case of a glans penis hemangioma treated with this technique.

Forty-three patients with verrucous epidermal naevi were treated either with argon-laser coagulation or with carbon-dioxide laser vaporization. We have used excimer laser during the past year to correct refractive errors (myopia and hypermetropia) and to remove superficial corneal scars. 714 eyes underwent excimer laser photorefractive keratectomy for correction of myopia and 81% of the patients achieved uncorrected visual acuity of 6/12 or better without glasses. 17 patients underwent a second treatment to correct residual myopia and all of them had uncorrected visual acuity of 6/12 or better 6 months later. Malignant glaucoma was initially reported as developing after surgery for glaucoma. Subsequently, associations with trauma, inflammation, and the use of miotic agents, as well as spontaneous occurrence have been noted. A newly developed compact (40 kg), self-contained contact Neodymium:YAG laser produces high-peak, high-energy (800 mJ/pulse), short (1.0 millisecond) pulses with 1 to 3 pulses/exposure. Of 149 laser laparoscopies 50 were performed for adnexal masses. Histological evaluation revealed benign cysts in 54%, endometrioma in 24% and other benign tumors in 14%. In 2 cases, a mucinous cyst was diagnosed, in 1 case a borderline ovarian tumor and in 1 case adenocarcinoma was found. There were no complications. 10% of the patients underwent secondary laparotomy. During the observation period, 6% of the patients required operation for recurrent disease. Low complication rate, little blood loss and a short hospital stay are advantages of laparoscopic surgery.
