Topical therapy for toenail onychomycosis: an evidence-based review.

BACKGROUND: Managing toenail onychomycosis with topical treatments is challenging. It is difficult for topical medication to penetrate the nail plate, and this is reflected in lower cure rates with topical treatment than with oral treatment. However, oral medications may not be suitable for some patients, because of drug interactions; therefore, topical treatments are critical in managing the disease in certain patient populations. OBJECTIVE: This paper reviews the quality and content of the scientific literature on topical treatments for toenail onychomycosis. METHODS: PubMed, Ovid (Medline

Glaucoma.

INTRODUCTION: Glaucoma is characterised by progressive optic neuropathy and peripheral visual field loss. It affects 1% to 2% of white people aged over 40 years and accounts for 8% of new blind registrations in the UK. The main risk factor for glaucoma is raised intraocular pressure, but 40% of people with glaucoma have normal intraocular pressure and only 10% of people with raised intraocular pressure are at risk of optic-nerve damage. Glaucoma is more prevalent, presents earlier, and is more difficult to control in black people than in white populations. METHODS AND OUTCOMES: We conducted a

Host, parasite and drug determinants of clinical outcomes following treatment of visceral leishmaniasis: a protocol for individual participant data meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a parasitic disease with an estimated 30 000 new cases occurring annually. There is an observed variation in the efficacy of the current first-line therapies across different regions. Such heterogeneity could be a function of host, parasite and drug factors. An individual participant data meta-analysis (IPD-MA) is planned to explore the determinants of treatment outcomes. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The Infectious Diseases Data Observatory (IDDO) VL living systematic review (IDDO VL LSR) library is an open-access resource of all published therapeutic stu

Quality of life in survivors of pediatric medulloblastoma: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Medulloblastoma (MB) is the most common malignant pediatric brain tumor. The mainstay of treatment is maximum surgical resection and craniospinal radiation, which may be followed by chemotherapy. The debilitating effect of the tumor and the intensive treatment approaches in MB lead to long-term neuropsychological, physical, and chronic medical problems. We conducted a systematic review to assess the quality of life (QoL) in the long-term survivors of MB and the factors leading to compromised QoL. METHODS: We utilized the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-

A systematic review of the relationship between severe maternal morbidity and post-traumatic stress disorder.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of severe maternal morbidity is increasing in high-income countries as a consequence, in part, of increased obstetric intervention and increasingly complex medical needs of women who become pregnant. Access to emergency obstetric care means that for the majority of women in these countries, an experience of severe maternal morbidity is unlikely to result in loss of life. However, little is known about the subsequent impact on postnatal psychological health resulting in an evidence gap to support provision of appropriate care for these women. There has recently been in
