Subsequent depression in patients with lip and head and neck cancer: a population-based primary care analysis.

BACKGROUND: Lip and head and neck cancer is associated with a significant psychological burden. However, there is a lack of evidence from German primary care regarding the association between lip and head and neck cancer and subsequent depression. Our study aimed to determine the association between lip and head and neck cancer diagnosis and subsequent depression diagnosis. METHODS: Using the German Disease Analyzer database (IQVIA), we conducted a retrospective cohort study of adults (≥ 18 years) with incident lip and head and neck cancer (ICD-10 C00-C06) initially documented in general prac

Reconstruction of total lower lip, labial commissure and palatomaxillary defect with composite island cheek flap.

Functional and cosmetic restoration of total lower lip, labial commissure, and palatomaxillary defects can be achieved by using multiform flaps. The possibility of reconstruction of these areas with composite island cheek flap is presented. The flap was used in three patients who were surgically treated between 1993 and 1998. In one female patient, total lower lip and chin defect was restored with a small contralateral platysma muscle cutaneous flap. The functional and cosmetic result was achieved with composite island cheek flap. In the other two cases, reconstruction was performed without an

Results of combined external irradiation and chemotherapy of bleomycin or peplomycin for squamous cell carcinomas of the lower gingiva.

PURPOSE: In Japan, the role of radiotherapy for gingival carcinomas has not been considered as a radical treatment, but only a pre and/or postoperative treatment. This study was aimed to discuss a possibility of radiotherapy for a radical treatment. In this study, radiotherapy was given as an initial treatment for squamous cell carcinomas of the lower gingiva in simultaneous combination with chemotherapy of bleomycin or peplomycin (Tokyo, Japan). METHODS AND MATERIALS: When complete regression of the tumor was obtained, subsequent surgery was postponed with or without a booster of radiotherap

Anatomical basis and versatile application of the free medial sural artery perforator flap for head and neck reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: The medial sural artery perforator flap is a thin and pliable flap. This study investigated the perforator topography of the medial sural artery perforator flap and its clinical application in head and neck reconstruction. METHODS: From January of 2005 to April of 2009, 29 patients with 29 medial gastrocnemius territories were evaluated. Among them, 26 patients underwent head and neck reconstruction using 26 medial sural artery perforator flaps. The number, location, and topographic patterns of the perforators were measured. RESULTS: Flap sizes ranged from 8 x 4 cm to 12 x 14 cm.

PDGFRa amplification in multiple skin lesions of undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma: A clue for intimal sarcoma metastases.

A 62-year-old human immunodeficiency virus-positive man was admitted for multiple cutaneous and subcutaneous nodules on his lower limbs, corresponding to an undifferentiated proliferation of spindle and pleomorphic cells, with irregular nuclei and numerous mitoses. The tumor cells were negative for a large panel of immunohistochemical markers, except CD10. MDM2 immunohistochemical staining was also negative, leading to the diagnosis of Fédération Nationale des Centres de Lutte contre le Cancer grade III undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma (UPS). Array-comparative genomic hybridization showed

Relationship between non-syndromic oral clefts and cancer: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To summarize the clinical evidence on the relationship between cancer and non-syndromic oral cleft (NSOC). METHODS: The review was reported according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses checklist, and a literature search was conducted in six databases and gray literature. Studies published in any language mentioning cancer in patients with NSOC and their relatives and NSOC in patients with cancer and their relatives were included. Risk of bias was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute appraisal tool. The certainty of the evidence was evalu

Reconstruction of the Oral Commissure With the Zisser Flap.

The aim of this study was to investigate the role of the Zisser flap in the reconstruction of defects of the oral commissure. We describe our personal experience with this method and present some interesting aspects from the relevant literature. We retrospectively evaluated the records, from the period between 2003 and 2017, of all patients with defects of the oral commissure after resection of malignant tumors, traumas, or burns and reconstruction by means of the Zisser flap. We looked for information on the origin of the commissural defect, method of vermillion reconstruction using the lingu

[Technical information: The 'so called' Camille Bernard lower lip reconstruction: An eponymous confusion clarified].

The use of eponyms honours those who have contributed to the development of medicine and facilitates communication between colleagues. Eponyms are based on historical knowledge to know who was the first to use a given technique. In the previous century, two different operative procedures have been attached to the 'so called' Bernard lower lip reconstruction. This historical literature on lip reconstruction with a focus on the years 1853-1855 elucidates the roles of Bernard, Saeman, Desgranges and Burow, and gives suggestions for eponyms that do justice to the innovating surgeons Bernard, Burow

Incidence of lip malignancies in Germany-data from nine population-based cancer registries.

BACKGROUND: The objective of this study was to analyse the incidence of lip malignancies in Germany. METHODS: Data from population-based cancer registries covering a population of 39 million inhabitants from 14 federal states were pooled. Lip malignancies were classified according to the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10). Age-standardised incidence rates and annual percentage changes in the incidence trends of lip cancer (C00), melanoma of the lip (C43.0), and non-melanoma skin cancer of the lip (C44.0) were calculated. RESULTS: Lip cancer (C00) incidence rate was 0.57/0.15 p

Reconstruction of large defects of the lips and commissure using a composite radial forearm palmaris longus free flap associated with a lengthening temporalis myoplasty.

We performed a single-stage operation to reconstruct a large defect of the lips and commissure using a composite radial forearm-palmaris longus free flap. To obtain cranial traction and a voluntary smile, independently from any jaw movement, traction was achieved by using a lengthening temporalis myoplasty. The tendon attached to the coronoid process was fixed to the palmaris longus tendon, recreating a new commissure and a "neo-modiolus." Physical therapy was started on the 21st postoperative day to facilitate progress from a "mandibular smile," to ideally a spontaneous and symmetric smile af

Adding versatility to the reconstruction of intraoral lining: opened pocket method.

Reconstruction of a full-thickness cheek defect, especially one associated with a large lip and oral commissure defect, remains a challenge. After tumor excision, replacement of the oral mucosa is often necessary. The oral mucosa is a thin, pliable lining. Because the skin of the forearm is ideally suited for replacement of oral lining, being thin, pliable, and predominantly hairless, the radial forearm flap is the most frequently used soft-tissue flap for this purpose. In addition, the vascularity of the area allows substantial variation in the design of the flap, both in relation to its site

Hemiphiltrum rotated flap.

In three patients of different ages, large resections of the philtrum have been repaired by rotating island flaps from the residual philtrum, leaving inconspicuous scars and no contour deformity. The rotated hemiphiltrum flap described here is an easy and safe procedure performed with local anesthesia that may be an effective cosmetic and functional repair of selected difficult surgical defects of the central upper lip involving the philtrum.

Minimizing risk of infection using a carbon dioxide laser.

The carbon dioxide laser is a surgical device increasingly important to dentistry. The advantages of laser use in the treatment of oral disease have been well documented. Such benefits include bloodless incisions, accurate tissue destruction, reduced pain, minimal swelling, excellent hemostasis, and limited postoperative tissue morbidity. Little information exists currently regarding laser use in the management of medically complex patients, most notably patients with infectious diseases. This article reports the use of the carbon dioxide laser for reducing the risks of disease transmission in

Prenatal sonographic detection of fetal facial malformations.

Abnormalities of the fetal face were diagnosed prenatally by ultrasound in six cases. These included four cases of cleft lip and palate, one case of cyclopia with holoprosencephaly, and one case of fetal facial hemangioma. Of the fetuses with cleft lip and palate, one had trisomy 13, and one had Pierre Robin syndrome. Facial anomalies detected by ultrasound may suggest the presence of other accompanying malformations and may sometimes warrant chromosomal studies. Thus, careful imaging of the fetal face is an important part of ultrasound examination when evaluating the fetus at risk.

Upper and lower lip reconstruction using the step technique.

The step technique for lip reconstruction is a simple, flexible, one-stage operation that allows reconstruction of full-thickness defects spanning up to two-thirds of the lower lip and, in our experience, one-half of the upper lip without violating the opposite lip or using distant advancement flaps. Twelve patients, ranging in age from 24 to 86 years, underwent full-thickness lip excisions for squamous cell and deeply invading basal cell carcinomas. Reconstruction was achieved by advancing the remaining lateral lip elements to close the defects in a stepwise fashion without violating the rema

Lip lesions in Nigerian Igbos.

Lesions of the lip seen over a 7-year period at a central laboratory serving the Igbos of Nigeria are reviewed. In approximately 8,500 surgical specimens, there were 63 jaw tumors but only 16 lip lesions. Two of lip lesions alone were carcinomas. Both were (a) squamous celled, (b) associated with sunlight-induced degeneration of the dermal collagen, and (c) found in young adult albinos. Accordingly, albinism should be recognized as one of the etiologic factors in lip cancer. The appropriate preventive action is the wearing of wide-brim hats by albinos.

A rare case of high-grade intraductal carcinoma of the upper lip: immunohistochemical and genetic analyses.

Although intraductal carcinoma (IDC) of the salivary glands was previously called low-grade cribriform cystadenocarcinoma, it was newly categorized in the 4th version of the World Health Organization classification. We report a case of IDC of the upper lip and examined it immunohistochemically and genetically. The patient was a 48-year-old Japanese female, who noticed a tiny nodule on her left upper lip. Histologically, the tumor cells, which had eosinophilic cytoplasm, exhibited papillary and solid growth patterns, and regions of suspected microinvasion or intraductal spread were also seen at

Incidence, mortality and survival rates of lip, oral cavity and salivary glands cancers in Singapore: A half-century time trend analysis (1968-2017).

OBJECTIVES: To examine trends in incidence and mortality and evaluate overall survival (OS) of oral cancer in Singapore between 1968 and 2017. METHODS: All diagnosed oral cancers by anatomical sites and population size were extracted from the Singapore Cancer Registry and the Department of Statistics Singapore. The trend of age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR) and mortality rate (ASMR) (per 100 000 person-years) of the lip, oral cavity and salivary gland cancers were evaluated by Prais-Winsten regressions for each ethnicity and gender. Kaplan-Meier curves were performed to evaluate the OS b
