INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the long-term position of erupted third molars after maxillary total arch distalization using modified C-palatal plates (MCPPs) in adolescents and to identify factors associated with these positions.
SETTING AND SAMPLE POPULATION: Sixty-two third molars (male: 20, female: 42) in Class II patients treated with MCPPs and thirty-nine teeth for the Control group (male: 22, female: 17).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Samples were analyzed using panoramic radiographs taken initially (T0), after treatment (T1) and after >3 years retention (T2). Third

Objective: To evaluate the most frequent skeletal craniofacial pattern. Methods: Cone beam computed tomography images were obtained for a sample of 332 skulls from the eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth centuries. A sample of 150 individuals from the twenty-first century was also included. The different skeletal craniofacial patterns were then classified into subclasses according to Slavicek´s method. Results: Over the centuries, skeletal Class II malocclusion has been more prevalent, mainly in the nineteenth century. The skeletal Class I subclass neutral maxilla and neutral mandible (N-N) has

INTRODUCTION: Fixed functional appliances are non-compliant solutions to Class II malocclusion treatment. The clinician, however, should be careful of unexpected complications during the therapy.
METHODS: 58 female adolescents who presented with Class II malocclusion due to deficient mandible were treated with Forsus Fatigue Resistant Device (FFRD) therapy until an overcorrection to an edge to edge incisor relationship was achieved.
RESULTS: Incisor relationship and overjet were corrected successfully in all the subjects. Twenty-two patients had a complications-free treatment, while several

AIM: The aim of this study was to analyze the predisposing factors of upper incisal trauma in children candidates for orthodontic treatment.
METHODS: This is a retrospective study involving 102 consecutive patients who requested orthodontic therapy at Pediatric Dentistry Clinic of Bari University's Dental School during the time frame 2012-2019. The distribution of reported dental trauma was analyzed according to gender, type of trauma, etiology, overjet and labial competence.
RESULTS: No substantial association between gender and trauma emerged from our study. Patients between the age range

AIM: To compare the condyle sagittal position of class I and class II division 2 in orthodontic patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty orthodontic cases (30 females and 20 males; 12-31 years) from the records of an Orthodontic Graduate Program were collected. Such cases presented cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) as part of their initial diagnostic examinations. The study sample constituted two groups, i.e. class I and class II division 2 groups. A previously calibrated examiner performed the measurements of the images, representing the distance between the condyle and the articular surfac

This article reports the camouflage treatment of a female patient, aged 15 years 2 months, who had a Class II Division 1 malocclusion with severe anterior protrusion and deep incisor overbite. The camouflage treatment plan included bilateral extraction of the maxillary first premolars combined with the use of temporary anchorage devices (TADs) and tension coil springs to retract canines into the extraction spaces and then the 4 incisors. The treatment included use of a mandibular fixed labial arch with minimal use of Class II elastics to correct mild mandibular spacing and level the curve of S

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the dental, skeletal and soft tissue effects in Class II malocclusion patients treated with Distal Jet appliance, compared to an untreated control group.
METHODS: 44 patients with Class II malocclusion were divided into two groups: Group 1 (experimental) - 22 patients, mean age of 12.7 years, treated with the Distal Jet appliance for a mean period of 1.2 years; Group 2 (control) - 22 untreated patients, mean age of 12.2 years, followed by a mean period of 1.2 years. Lateral cephalograms were obtained before treatment (T0) and at the end of the distalization (T1

OBJECTIVES: To compare fixed appliances and clear aligner therapy in correcting anterior open bite and in controlling the vertical dimension in adult patients with hyperdivergent skeletal patterns.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this retrospective study, two treatment groups of adult (≥18 years old) hyperdivergent patients (mandibular plane angles of ≥38°) with anterior open bites were included: 17 fixed appliance patients and 36 clear aligner patients. Thirteen cephalometric measurements representing the vertical dimension were reported for each group. A two-sample t-test was used to assess diffe

BACKGROUND: Managing orthodontic treatment is often very difficult for the orthodontist. Many devices are used during the orthopedic phase of orthodontic treatment, always with different functions. We describe a case of orthodontic management treated with the Equilibrator O.S.A. device (equilibrator designed by Ovidi, Santi, and Aprile for Eptamed SRL; Cesena, Italy; www.eptamed.com ).
CASE PRESENTATION: A healthy 10-year-old white boy presented with a skeletal class II, division 1 malocclusion, molar class II, exhibiting an overjet of 7 mm prior to treatment. For treatment, we only used the

INTRODUCTION: A canted occlusal plane presents an unesthetic element of the smile. The correction of this asymmetry has been typically considered difficult by orthodontists, as it requires complex mechanics and may sometimes even require orthognathic surgery.
OBJECTIVE: This paper outlines the case of a 29-year-old woman with Class II malocclusion, pronounced midline deviation and accentuated occlusal plane inclination caused by mandibular deciduous molar ankylosis.
METHODS: The patient was treated with a miniplate used to provide anchorage in order to intrude maxillary teeth and extrude man

This was a case of a 21-year-old female patient with a very rare and unexpected symptom "diplopia occurring due to the idiopathic sixth nerve palsy" encountered after 2 weeks following bimaxillary surgery performed for the correction of class III malocclusion deformity.

Aplasia of the mandibular condyle alone without any other facial malformation and medical history is a very rare condition. This clinical report describes treatment with a functional appliance in a young patient with aplasia of the mandibular condyle alone without any other facial malformation, which is a very rare condition. The patient, a 6(1/2)-year-old girl, was referred for treatment of mandibular asymmetry. There was no relevant family history. The patient showed early mixed dentition with a II molar relationship on the right and II on the left side, 5 mm of overbite and 5 mm of overjet,

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to analyze the changes of tongue shape and position, hyoid position with FR-I therapy in class II, division 1 malocclusion.
METHODS: 12 patients with class II, division 1 malocclusion treated with FR-I appliance(8 male, 4 female, average 11 years old) were chosen. The acceptable standard of this experiment was an horizontal growth pattern with normal maxilla, retracted mandible and short lower facial height. The average period of treatment was about 8 months. The assessment was made from a lateral cephalogram taken in habitual occlusion before and aft

A case of mandibular asymmetry is presented. It appears that in this patient the mandible was adapted to changes in the maxillary sinus area. Abnormal bone growth of unknown aetiology inside the sinus most likely caused complete remodelling in the maxillary sinuses and asymmetry of the mandible. Special tests used for detailed assessment of the patient supported the definitive diagnosis.

The prevalence of double teeth in the primary dentition, for the British schoolchild, is 1.6%. Although primary double teeth in the anterior region of the mouth are not uncommon, double teeth in the primary molar region are rare. This case report describes the intra-oral findings, and in particular a case of a primary molar double tooth, in a young child who has Russel-Silver syndrome.
