Plexiform neurofibromas are peripheral nerve sheath tumors associated with neurofibromatosis type 1. The maxillary sinus is an extremely rare location of the plexiform neurofibroma and only two adult cases have been previously reported. We report the first case of plexiform neurofibroma of the maxillary sinus occurring in a child with neurofibromatosis type 1. This unusual location presents a management challenge considering the infiltrative nature and the potential malignant degeneration of this type of tumor. MRI is highly valuable to diagnose and plan the surgical approach of the plexiform

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of our study was to elucidate the relationship between arterial perfusion in advanced maxillary sinus cancer which was opacified by superselective intra-arterial computed tomographic arteriography (IA-CTA) and the tumor response to intra-arterial chemotherapy.
METHODS: Superselective IA-CTA was performed to identify the feeding arteries and their perfusion in advanced maxillary sinus cancer in 10 patients. Cisplatin was selectively infused into these feeding arteries, except for the internal carotid artery.
RESULTS: The results were assessed in 9 of the 10 patients, an

BACKGROUND: We describe an unusual case of extra-nodal non-Hodgkin's lymphoma that developed in the maxillae associated with localized severe periodontitis in a 64-year-old Caucasian male. The lymphoma was diagnosed less than 2 years following routine periodontal surgery and 8 weeks after the extraction of hopeless teeth in the associated area.
METHODS: Two months following the extractions, the patient experienced pain and swelling in the maxillary right edentulous area mimicking an abscess, and reported for emergency care. An expansile lesion measuring 2.0 x 2.5 cm in diameter was noted on r

A case of angiocentric T-cell lymphoma presenting as a midface destructive lesion is reported. Angiocentric T-cell lymphoma typically manifests as an aggressive, progressively destructive, and necrotizing disorder, often with a fatal outcome. This case was characterized microscopically by the presence of an atypical lymphoid population that expressed a CD45+, CD3+ cytoplasmic, CD5+, and CD56- T-cell phenotype within a background of a polymorphous inflammatory infiltrate. Because of the rarity of the disorder, the differential diagnosis is discussed. Recent advances in clinical immunodiagnostic

OBJECT: The objective of this study was to evaluate and analyze morphometric and volumetric changes of the skull due to acromegaly in areas relevant for neurosurgical practice, focusing on the surgical implications.
METHODS: On preoperatively acquired CT scans, cephalometric and volumetric measurements were performed on 45 patients with acromegaly (Group A) and 45 control patients (Group B). The authors determined thickness of the cranial vault, inner and outer diameters of the skull, and the diameter of sphenoidal and maxillary sinus, as well as frontal and maxillary sinus volumetry. The mor

A 52-year-old male who had chronic hypertension for several years presented with abrupt epistaxis. The CT scan revealed a 40 mm × 40 mm mass in the nasal cavity intended to the maxillary sinus and the base of skull. Nasal endoscope biopsy and serum/urinary catecholamine detection conformed an ectopic noradrenaline-secreting pheochromocytoma. The present research was to discuss the clinical characteristics of the rare pheochromocytoma and the palliative interventional embolization for it.

CLINICAL CASE: A 53-year old male presented with visual impairment in right eye after irradiation of right maxillary sinus carcinoma. Funduscopy shows radiation retinopathy: haemorrhages, exudates, macular oedema, and peripheral retinal ischaemia. A poor outcome was achieved despite laser treatment and intravitreal injections of bevacizumab, resulting in evisceration of the affected eye.
DISCUSSION: Radiation retinopathy must be considered in any loss of vision after head and neck irradiation. Ophthalmological long-term follow-up of these patients is essential for an early diagnosis.

Maxillary antral malignancies are mostly squamous cancers. Sarcomas in this region are rare. The head and neck region houses around 8.9% of all sarcomas and spindle cell sarcomas of the maxillary antrum had rarely been reported. The presentation, pathology, clinical findings, management and short term response to treatment of a left maxillary antral spindle cell sarcoma, in a Muslim, male tobacco chewer is reported here.

Although transnasal endoscopic medial maxillectomy (TEMM) is effective for the treatment of inverted papilloma (IP) in maxillary sinus (MS), it involves resection of the inferior turbinate (IT). TEMM also involves resection of the nasolacrimal duct (ND) in many cases to gain better access. Therefore, we developed a novel procedure in which the preserved IT and ND are shifted medially for a complete resection of IP in the MS. Incision was made in the mucosa of the lateral wall along the anterior margin of the IT. After removal of the medial maxillary wall except the ND and the lateral nasal muc

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumours (IMT) of the nasal cavity and nasal sinus are rare and, although over 50 cases have been reported in the English-language literature, their precise aetiology and biological behaviour have not been elucidated. Recent studies suggest that anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK)-positive tumours have a very low risk of metastasis, but ALK reactivity does not appear to correlate with recurrence. Between March 2002 and December 2008, we encountered three cases of maxillary sinus IMT and investigated them to determine the clinicopathological course, prognosis and immuno

A 51-year-old man complained of left facial swelling and recurrent nasal bleeding. A giant solid tumor in the left maxillary sinus was detected on head CT and MRI, and this tumor was destroying the maxilla and extending into the orbit, pterygoid muscle and posterior paranasal sinuses. The resected specimen consisted of spindle cells containing necrotic material. Histological examination revealed immature tumor cells, and immunohistological study of the tumor showed staining was only positive for vimentin. We accordingly diagnosed undifferentiated sarcoma in the maxillary sinus. Combination che

The Scanora spiral tomography system can be used to solve a range of imaging problems in the maxillofacial region. However, the system has no specific programs for imaging bony lesions of the hard palate or medially and cranially displaced maxillary third molars. New patient-positioning techniques were therefore developed on the basis of phantom radiographs, and their successful application in patients is presented. With the novel techniques, good radiographic representations of the hard and soft palates in the posteroanterior and lateral projections and of maxillary third molars were achieved

A new technique is shown for a one-stage reconstruction of the mucosa of the floors of the nose and maxillary sinus, the bone structures of the maxilla and the hard palate, as well as the mucosal layers of the hard and soft palates and vestibulum. To accomplish this coverage, a vascularized calvarial bone graft with temporal muscle from one side is combined with a vascularized temporal muscle flap from the other side to achieve a three-layer "sandwich" plasty. The advantage of this procedure is reconstruction of the complete maxillary defect with the possibility of denture rehabilitation and t

A 50-year-old severely immunodeficient woman with malignant non-Hodgkin lymphoma died from graft-versus-host disease due to transfusion of a single unit of packed red cells. Three days after this transfusion a maculo-papular rash appeared, followed by generalized erythroderma refractory to therapy and eventually progressing into generalized ulcero-squamous dermatitis. This case, and a review of other similar cases published elsewhere, prompt the authors to recommend prophylactic irradiation of blood products prior to their administration to patients with cellular immunodeficiency, particularly

Sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma (SNUC) is an uncommon aggressive tumor. Locally advanced disease is usually diagnosed at presentation. Multidisciplinary approach is essential and aims to ensure optimal trimodal strategy. Induction chemotherapy is preferred in order to select patients who will benefit from chemoradiotherapy or surgery. Immunotherapy is not indicated in patients with recurrent SNUC. We describe an impressive response in a young man previously treated with radiotherapy and chemotherapy and demolitive surgery who had metastatic bone and lung disease. We also report data on PD

AIM: Description of an alternative surgical approach to the posterolateral maxillary and pterygoid region.
PATIENTS AND METHOD: Three patients with posterior maxillary/pterygoid lesions are described in whom a lower cheek flap was used to achieve optimal surgical exposure. After midline division of the soft tissues of the lower lip and chin, the incision is extended posteriorly in the inferior gingivobuccal sulcus and continued lateral from the retromolar trigone in the upward direction lateral from the maxillary tuberosity. The flap is elevated under the periosteum towards the angle of the m
