Radiological and antroscopic study of maxillary antrum in multibacillary leprosy patients.

Sixty consecutive patients having multibacillary leprosy were examined for symptoms of nasal involvement and sinusitis. A complete ENT examination was carried out of all these patients and they were subjected to radiological examination of paranasal sinuses. Radiological abnormalities of maxillary antrum were found in 15 of 20 cases of lepromatous leprosy, 6 of 26 cases of borderline lepromatous and in 14 cases of mid-borderline leprosy. Localized or generalized mucosal thickening was the most common finding, followed by opacity of maxillary antrum. Radiological abnormalities were confirmed by

[Osteoma of the maxillary sinus].

BACKGROUND: Osteoma of the paranasal sinuses is a rare and benign entity that develops slowly. If they occur, locations within the frontal sinus and ethmoid cells are more frequent, whereas osteomas in the sphenoid or maxillary sinus are very rare. CASE: We report on a 25-year old female patient presenting with a bony mass in the right maxillary sinus. A standard external approach using a modified Caldwell-Luc procedure was successfully employed as endoscopic endonasal surgery was limited by the size of the bony lesion. CONCLUSIONS: Trauma or infection are often suggested as an etiologic fac

[Misleading x-ray diagnosis due to maxillary sinus asymmetries (author's transl)].

Asymmetries of the maxillary sinus with partial or total radiographic opacity mislead to the diagnosis of chronic sinusitis. Using three radiographic standard projections, computerised planimetric analysis and cephalometric studies helped to explain radiological opacity in 26 patients. So called "mucosal thickening" may be due to varying development of the zygomatic recess. Total opacity was caused not only by unilateral volume difference exceeding 30%, but also by straightning of the first lateral line in basal views of small and moderate sized sinuses. Cephalometric analysis in maxillary sin

Development and validation of a formula based on maxillary sinus measurements as a tool for sex estimation: a cone beam computed tomography study.

BACKGROUND: As sex estimation is an important step to delineate the biological profile, the development of tools employing anatomical structures which may maintain their integrity even after extreme events, such as the maxillary sinus, become useful for forensic identification. Thus, the aim in the present study was to develop and validate a formula for sex estimation through measurements in the maxillary sinuses in a Brazilian population, using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Linear and volumetric measurements in the maxillary sinus were performed bilaterall

Association between Odontogenic Conditions and Maxillary Sinus Disease: A Study Using Cone-beam Computed Tomography.

INTRODUCTION: The maxillary sinus can be affected by dental infections because of its close relationship with upper teeth. This study aimed to assess the most common types of maxillary sinus alterations and to associate them with odontogenic conditions using cone-beam computed tomographic (CBCT) images. METHODS: CBCT scans of 400 patients showing sinus disease in 1 or both maxillary sinuses were evaluated. Sinus alteration was considered as follows: generalized or localized mucosal thickening (MT), maxillary sinusitis (MS), and retention cysts (RCs). The odontogenic conditions evaluated were …

Metastasis of Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma to the Maxillary Sinus: Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Metastasis of the thyroid carcinoma to the paranasal sinuses is rarely reported. Among these sinuses, metastasis to the maxillary sinus alone has been reported only in a few cases. This is the first reported case in a 76-year-old woman with papillary thyroid carcinoma metastasizing to the maxillary sinus alone and resected through endoscopic sinonasal surgery. When patients have sinus lesions and a history of malignancy, metastasis should be included in the differential diagnosis. If they have an isolated metastatic lesion to the paranasal sinus, ESS, either palliative or radical, can be a use

Growth and microanatomy of the paranasal sinuses in two species of New World monkeys.

Paranasal sinuses of living apes and humans grow with positive allometry, suggesting a novel mechanism for bone enlargement. Here, we examine the paranasal sinuses of the owl monkey (Aotus spp.) and a tamarin (Saguinus midas) across postnatal development. The prediction that paranasal sinuses grow disproportionately faster than the main nasal chamber is tested. We used diffusible iodine-based contrast-enhanced computed tomography and histology to study sinuses in eight Aotus and three tamarins ranging from newborn to adult ages. Sinuses were segmented at the mucosa-air cavity interface and mea

Differences in urinary leukotriene E4 levels and distribution of eosinophils between chronic rhinosinusitis patients with aspirin-intolerant and -tolerant asthma.

OBJECTIVE: Urinary leukotriene E4 (U-LTE4) concentrations are significantly elevated in patients with aspirin-intolerant asthma (AIA). However, the relationship between the clinicopathogenetic features of eosinophilic rhinosinusitis and U-LTE4 concentration remains unknown. Here we examined the relationship between U-LTE4 level and eosinophil in chronic rhinosinusitis. METHODS: We measured the U-LTE4 concentrations and eosinophil counts in ethmoidal and maxillary sinuses and peripheral blood in 30 asthmatic patients (including 15 AIA patients). RESULTS: Eosinophil counts in ethmoidal sinuses

Odontogenic sinusitis publication trends from 1990 to 2019: a systematic review.

PURPOSE: Odontogenic sinusitis (ODS) is underrepresented in the literature compared to other forms of rhinosinusitis, specifically in sinusitis guidelines and position statements. ODS publication characteristics could help explain why ODS has received less attention in sinusitis guidelines and position statements. The purpose of this study was to explore trends in the quantity and quality of ODS studies over 3 decades from 1990 to 2019. METHODS: A systematic review was performed to identify all ODS studies from 1990 to 2019. The following variables from all ODS studies were compared between a

Paranasal sinus ventilation in healthy subjects and in patients with sinus disease evaluated with the 133-xenon washout technique.

Ventilation of the paranasal sinuses is of great importance in sinus pathophysiology. Therefore, methods of measuring sinus ventilation are important for the evaluation of patients with sinus disease. In the present study, a 133-xenon washout technique was used to evaluate the ventilation of the paranasal sinuses in 34 healthy subjects and in 13 subjects with sinus disease (5 patients with nasal polyposis and 8 patients with chronic sinusitis). For this purpose, a 133-xenon-air mixture was insufflated in each nostril and the washout of the radioactive gas from the paranasal sinuses was monitor

Maxillary sinus inflammation assessment using FDG-PET/CT in head and neck cancer patients with photon, proton, and combined radiation therapy.

BACKGROUND: Head and neck cancer (HNC) patients frequently develop post-radiation maxillary sinusitis. This study investigated how different radiation therapy (RT) modalities, photon, proton, and mixed photon/proton RT, affect maxillary sinus inflammation, using 2-[18F]-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose-positron emission tomography/computed tomography (FDG-PET/CT). METHODS: Seventy-seven HNC patients treated with RT (30 with photon, 20 with proton, and 27 with mixed photon/proton RT) underwent FDG-PET/CT imaging before and 3 months after treatment. Demographic information, tumor location, chemotherapy…

Histomorphometric evaluation of different graft associations for maxillary sinus elevation in wide antral cavities: a randomized controlled clinical trial.

OBJECTIVES: Pneumatization of the maxillary sinus can make it difficult, if not impossible, to install osseointegrated implants, and undertake their eventual functional rehabilitation, which may ultimately require regenerative techniques to achieve. This randomized controlled study proposed conducting a histological evaluation of the behavior of different graft materials in wide maxillary sinuses, at a height of 8 to 10 mm from the alveolar ridge, combined with bone remnants less than 3mm. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-six patients underwent a sinus elevation procedure through the lateral win

Resolution of maxillary sinus mucositis after endodontic treatment of maxillary teeth with apical periodontitis: a cone-beam computed tomography pilot study.

INTRODUCTION: Apical periodontitis (AP) is an inflammatory response that can affect the maxillary sinus. This study characterized maxillary sinus mucositis adjacent to teeth with AP and assessed its resolution after endodontic treatment. METHODS: Thirty maxillary sinuses in subjects (n = 29) who had AP associated with maxillary posterior teeth were imaged with cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). When mucositis was detected, its resolution was assessed with CBCT scanning 3 months after treatment, and periapical healing was assessed using the periapical index (PAI) after 6 months. RESULTS: E

Head of Zebu cattle (Bos Taurus indicus): sectional anatomy and 3D computed tomography.

The research was designed to use computed tomography (CT) with 3D-CT reconstruction imaging techniques and the various anatomical sections-plana transversalia, frontalis, and dorsalia-to describe the anatomical architecture of the Zebu cattle head. Our study used nine mature heads. The CT bone window created detailed images of cranial bones, mandibles, teeth, and hyoid bones. All of the head cavities were evaluated, including the cranial, orbital, oral, auricular, and nasal cavities with their paranasal and conchal sinuses. The septum nasi, attached to the vomer and maxillary bones, did not re

Treatment of an oroantral fistula with chronic sinusitis: a case report.

A patient with an oroantral fistula of seventeen years' duration presented clinically complaining of symptoms suggesting recurring episodes of acute maxillary sinusitis. After control of the acute sinusitis, the defect was repaired using a buccal flap procedure and the sinus was enucleated via a Caldwell-Luc approach. The sinus contents included what appeared to be a chicken bone. The patient healed uneventfully. A discussion of the management of chronic oroantral fistulas and a case report are presented.

Paranasal sinus obliteration in Wegener granulomatosis.

The authors report 14 cases of Wegener granulomatosis in which one or more paranasal sinuses were obliterated by bone. The maxillary antra were involved in all cases, with the other sinuses being affected less frequently. These changes are thought to result from chronic bacterial sinusitis superimposed on the granulomatous vasculitic process. Computed tomography dramatically demonstrated the bone changes, consisting of a combination of sinus wall thickening and trabeculated new bone formation within the sinuses.
