Primary hydatid cyst of sacral spinal canal: case report.

OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: Primary hydatid cysts of the spinal canal are very rare. The patient in the present case presented with lower cauda equina compression caused by a primary solitary hydatid cyst of the sacral spinal canal, which is a remote possibility. To the best of our knowledge, such a case has not been reported previously. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A 15-year-old male patient presented with lower motor neurone type of bladder and bowel involvement, with saddle-shaped anesthesia involving S2-S5 dermatomes. Plain x-rays and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans revealed a widened sacr

In vitro assessment of the activity of anthelmintic compounds on adults of Onchocerca volvulus.

The viability of adult Onchocerca volvulus and the effect of 12 known anthelmintic compounds on the parasites have been evaluated in an in vitro culture system. Three different parameters, a colorimetric assay, using NADH-dependent reduction of a tetrazolium salt to dark blue formazan by living adult worms, motility indices of male worms and lactate excretion of female worms were used to determine worm viability. The experiments showed that over a short term period of six days the viability of the worms did not decline significantly. The use of males isolated by dissection of whole nodules for

Cancer Therapy Using Antiparasitic Medications Guided by Acupuncture Meridian Assessment: A Case Series of Six Patients.

BACKGROUND: Cancer cells exhibit metabolic reprogramming often driven by aberrant Wnt/β-catenin signaling. Recent evidence suggests antiparasitic drugs can inhibit this pathway. Acupuncture Meridian Assessment (AMA), a modification of electroacupuncture according to Voll, measures electrical conductance at acupuncture points to guide therapeutic interventions. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate clinical outcomes of AMA-guided antiparasitic and antifungal therapy in patients with advanced cancer. METHODS: Six patients with stage IV cancers (breast, lung, prostate, glioblastoma, and multiple myeloma) unde

"Diagnostic challenges, atypical presentations, and therapeutic implications in ectopic Enterobius vermicularis infections: a global systematic review.".

BACKGROUND: Enterobius vermicularis is recognized as the second most common human nematode, primarily inhabiting the gastrointestinal tract and mostly affecting children. However, ectopic infections (where the parasite migrates to the extra intestinal sites) although rare, have been increasingly reported and pose diagnostic challenges due to atypical clinical presentations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic review following PRISMA guideline was conducted by searching PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar for relevant articles published from 1972 to July 2025. Forty articles rep

Hymenolepis nana-An Emerging Intestinal Parasite Associated with Anemia in School Children from the Bolivian Chaco.

Tropical anemia can have multiple causes, whether socioeconomic, dietary, or infectious. In the Bolivian Chaco, soil-transmitted helminthiases (STH), malaria, and Chagas disease are potential infectious causes of anemia among school-aged children (SAC). Following years of preventive chemotherapy with mebendazole, the prevalence of STH among SAC living in that area is now negligible, whereas protozoan infections are still highly prevalent (81%); Hymenolepis nana is the most frequent intestinal helminth (∼13%). We present results of hemoglobin (Hb) assessment and the association between parasiti

Gastrointestinal bleeding due to worm infestation, with negative upper gastrointestinal endoscopy findings: impact of enteroscopy.

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS: In cases of hookworm and roundworm infestation, chronic occult bleeding is well known, but acute gastrointestinal bleeding is rarely described. We report five patients with worm infestation who presented with acute massive gastrointestinal bleeding. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Over 1 year, we have encountered 15 patients with obscure gastrointestinal bleeding. All the patients had normal findings on upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. Push enteroscopy was performed in each patient and evaluation of the proximal 40-50 cm of the jejunum was done. RESULTS: Five patients (four

Acute airway obstruction by Ascaris lumbricoides in a 14-month-old boy.

We describe the case of a 14-month-old child with airway obstruction caused by a mature Ascaris lumbricoides worm. The child had been admitted to the paediatric intensive care unit due to overwhelming sepsis, and during the course of his illness developed acute airway obstruction that resolved once the worm was removed from the airway. The Ascaris life-cycle is detailed, and a literature review of patients with airway obstruction due to Ascaris worms is presented.

Nematodicidal activity of flubendazole and its reduced metabolite on a murine model of Trichinella spiralis infection.

BACKGROUND: Flubendazole (FLBZ) is a broad-spectrum benzimidazole anthelmintic compound. The parent FLBZ is metabolized to its reduced (R-FLBZ) and hydrolyzed (H-FLBZ) metabolites. There are no data on the potential nematodicidal activity of R-FLBZ, the main plasma metabolite found in sheep and mice. The goal of the current work was to assess the efficacy of FLBZ and R-FLBZ against Trichinella spiralis in a mouse model. METHODS: Both compounds were administered to Balb/c mice infected with T. spiralis as either a cyclodextrin aqueous solution or as a carboxymethylcellulose suspension. Treatme

Efficacy of flubendazole and albendazole against Trichinella spiralis in mice.

Efficacy of flubendazole and albendazole against Trichinella spiralis in mice were studied. ICR mice were experimentally infected with Trichinella spiralis and treated with either flubendazole (FBZ) or albendazole (ABZ) at four different stages of the parasite life-cycle. Oral administration of either FBZ or ABZ at 20 mg/kg and 50 mg/kg on 2 h, 8 h and 24 h (pre-adult stage) after infection eliminated 94.7-100% of adults as determined at necropsy on day 7 post infection (p.i.) and 96.9-100% of larvae on day 45 p.i. FBZ was more effective than ABZ against adult T. spiralis (at 2 to 6 days p.i.)

The public health significance of Trichuris trichiura.

An estimated 1049 million persons harbour T. trichiura, including 114 million preschool-age children and 233 million school-age children. The prevalence of T. trichiura is high and may reach 95% in children in many parts of the world where protein energy malnutrition and anaemias are also prevalent and access to medical care and educational opportunities is often limited. The Trichuris dysentery syndrome (TDS) associated with heavy T. trichiura, which includes chronic dysentery, rectal prolapse, anaemia, poor growth, and clubbing of the fingers constitutes an important public health problem, a

Survey for soil-transmitted helminths in Asahan Regency, North Sumatra, Indonesia.

The survey on soil-transmitted helminthiasis was carried out in the three villages of Asahan Regency, North Sumatra, Indonesia, between October 1981 and December 1982. The prevalence rates of geohelminthiasis proved to be extremely high (average 97%) in the three villages and more than 70% harboured three or more helminths, especially Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura and hookworm. Necator americanus and Ancylostoma duodenale were detected in 61.1% and 52.2% of 835 fecal specimens, respectively. The effects of two anthelmintics, Combantrin and Trivexan, were essentially the same agains

Onchocerca gibsoni: increase of circulating egg antigen with chemotherapy in bovines.

Monoclonal antibodies directed to stage-specific surface antigens of Onchocerca gibsoni eggs were used in immunoradiometric assays to detect antigens in the sera of cattle infected with O. gibsoni. Two monoclonal antibodies detected antigens, presumably of egg origin, in sera. The target antigens appeared to be carbohydrate in nature and of variable molecular weights. Significant increases in levels of circulating egg antigens were found after treatment of infected cattle with benzimidazole compounds. These drugs cause disruption of embryogenesis and accelerated loss of worm uterine contents.

The Effect of the Combination of Temozolomide and Flubendazole on Glioblastoma Cells.

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is a highly aggressive brain tumor characterized by rapid development of chemoresistance and poor patient survival. Due to the limited efficacy of current therapeutic protocols, alternative approaches are needed. One potential strategy is combined treatment with DNA-damaging and microtubule-targeting agents. This study investigated the biological effects of temozolomide (TMZ) and flubendazole (FLU) co-treatment in cultured GBM cells. Three GBM cell lines (A172, T98G, and U118MG) with different molecular profiles were treated with TMZ, FLU, or their combination. Tr

Drug Repurposing Flubendazole to Suppress Tumorigenicity via PCSK9-dependent Inhibition and Potentiate Lenvatinib Therapy for Hepatocellular Carcinoma.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most lethal malignant cancers across the world. It has a poor prognosis and lacks effective therapies, especially for patients with advanced-stage cancer, indicating an urgent need for new therapies and novel therapeutic targets. Here, by screening the U.S. Food and Drug Administration drug library against HCC cell lines, we identified that flubendazole, a traditional anthelmintic drug, could prominently suppress HCC cells in vivo and in vitro. RNA sequence analysis and cellular thermal shift assays showed that flubendazole reduced the expression of
