Normal aging modulates prefrontoparietal networks underlying multiple memory processes.

A functional decline of brain regions underlying memory processing represents a hallmark of cognitive aging. Although a rich literature documents age-related differences in several memory domains, the effect of aging on networks that underlie multiple memory processes has been relatively unexplored. Here we used functional magnetic resonance imaging during working memory and incidental episodic encoding memory to investigate patterns of age-related differences in activity and functional covariance patterns common across multiple memory domains. Relative to younger subjects, older subjects show

Electrophysiological Correlates of Encoding Indicate Altered Processing but Comparable Subsequent Memory Effects Across Virtual Reality and Desktop-Based Conditions.

Successful episodic memory formation emerges from the interplay of perceptual, attentional, contextual, and elaborative processes. The relative contribution of these processes to encoding may vary with the conditions under which information is encountered. In particular, different presentation modalities, like virtual reality (VR) and desktop-based presentations (PC), can convey the same semantic identity of an item while differing in perceptual, spatial, and contextual information. Although VR- and PC-encoded memories have been observed to differ in retrieval processes, it remains unclear whe

Spontaneous metacognitive experiences and involuntary memories in the laboratory.

Spontaneous metacognitive experiences, such as déjà vu, are notoriously difficult to study under controlled laboratory conditions. Barzykowski and Moulin (2023) proposed that experimental procedures known to elicit involuntary autobiographical memories (IAMs) may also trigger a broader range of spontaneous cognitive phenomena, including déjà vu, tip-of-the-tongue states (TOTs), jamais vu, error detection, and zoning out. In this study, 96 participants completed a low-demand vigilance task commonly used to elicit IAMs. Participants were instructed to press the spacebar whenever they experienced

Relation between Deese-Roediger-Mcdermott recall measures of false memory and the fading affect bias.

The fading affect bias (FAB) is the faster fading of unpleasant affect than pleasant affect for autobiographical event memories, and it is considered a healthy coping mechanism because it is positively related to healthy measures (e.g., self-esteem and positive PANAS), whereas it is negatively related to unhealthy measures (e.g., psychological distress and negative PANAS). Some researchers suggest that Deese-Roediger McDermott (DRM) critical lure false memories for words are conceptually equivalent to false memories for autobiographical event memories, which has not been examined. Based on the

Examining the diagnostic value of the mnemonic discrimination task for classification of cognitive status and amyloid-beta burden.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common type of dementia, characterized by early memory impairments and gradual worsening of daily functions. AD-related pathology, such as amyloid-beta (Aβ) plaques, begins to accumulate many years before the onset of clinical symptoms. Predicting risk for AD via related pathology is critical as the preclinical stage could serve as a therapeutic time window, allowing for early management of the disease and reducing health and economic costs. Current methods for detecting AD pathology, however, are often expensive and invasive, limiting wide and easy access

The Role of the Cerebellum in Learning to Predict Reward: Evidence from Cerebellar Ataxia.

Recent findings in animals have challenged the traditional view of the cerebellum solely as the site of motor control, suggesting that the cerebellum may also be important for learning to predict reward from trial-and-error feedback. Yet, evidence for the role of the cerebellum in reward learning in humans is lacking. Moreover, open questions remain about which specific aspects of reward learning the cerebellum may contribute to. Here we address this gap through an investigation of multiple forms of reward learning in individuals with cerebellum dysfunction, represented by cerebellar ataxia ca

Reduced anterior hippocampal and ventromedial prefrontal activity when repeatedly retrieving autobiographical memories.

Research has reported that repeatedly retrieving a novel or imagined event representation reduces activity within brain regions critical for constructing mental scenarios, namely the anterior hippocampus and ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC). The primary aim of this investigation was to test if this pattern reported for imagined events would be found when repeatedly recollecting autobiographical memories. Twenty-four participants retrieved 12 pre-selected autobiographical memories four times while undergoing an fMRI scan. We used a region of interest approach to investigate how the anteri

Childhood trauma affects autobiographical memory deficits through basal cortisol and prefrontal-extrastriate functional connectivity.

BACKGROUND: Psychological trauma can damage the brain, especially in areas where glucocorticoid receptors are expressed, via perturbed secretion of cortisol. Childhood trauma is associated with blunted basal cortisol secretion, brain alterations, and autobiographical memory deficits referred to as overgeneral autobiographical memory (OGM). However, it remains unknown whether childhood trauma affects OGM through altered cortisol and brain alterations. METHODS: Using resting-state fMRI in 100 healthy humans, we examined whether childhood trauma affects OGM through its related basal cortisol and

Structural correlates of commission errors in prospective memory.

Prospective memory refers to remembering to perform an intended future action, such as remembering to take medication with breakfast. Historically, the field has focused on failures to initially remember a prospective memory task (omission errors), but interestingly, individuals will occasionally repeat a prospective memory action after it has been completed (e.g., double dosing). These failures in prospective memory deactivation/forgetting are termed commission errors. The current registered study investigated structural neuroimaging correlates of a laboratory measure of commission errors in

Brain activation in highly superior autobiographical memory: The role of the precuneus in the autobiographical memory retrieval network.

This is the first study to examine functional brain activation in a single case of Highly Superior Autobiographical Memory (HSAM) who shows no sign of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). While previous work has documented the existence of HSAM, information about brain areas involved in this exceptional form of memory for personal events relies on structural and resting state connectivity data, with mixed results so far. In this first task-based functional magnetic resonance Imaging (fMRI) study of a normal individual with HSAM, dates were presented as cues and two phases were assessed during

Lower Sleep Duration Is Associated With Reduced Autobiographical Memory Specificity.

Objective/Background: Sleep can have an important influence on memory. However, it is unclear whether there is any relation between sleep quality and the specificity with which autobiographical memories are retrieved, a key factor associated with vulnerability for, and the presence of, depression and other psychiatric diagnoses. The present study provides the first investigation of the association between sleep quality and autobiographical memory specificity. Participants and Method: Fifty-four unselected community participants completed the Autobiographical Memory Test (AMT) to assess memory

The influence of mood and attitudes towards eating on cognitive and autobiographical memory flexibility in female university students.

Cognitive flexibility, as measured through set-shifting ability, appears to be impaired in patients with eating disorders (EDs). Thus, it is important to determine if the switching deficit seen in clinical eating disorders generalizes to participants with a subclinical disordered eating. Another deficit manifested by clinical and subclinical disordered eating is the ability to retrieve specific autobiographical memories. It is possible that deficits in autobiographical memory retrieval extends to the ability to shift between retrieving specific versus general autobiographical memory informatio

The Specificity of Health-Related Autobiographical Memories in Patients With Somatic Symptom Disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with somatic symptom disorder (SSD) have persistent distressing somatic symptoms that are associated with excessive thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Reduced autobiographical memory specificity (rAMS) is related to a range of emotional disorders and is considered a vulnerability factor for an unfavorable course of pathology. The present study investigated whether the specificity of health-related autobiographical memories is reduced in patients with SSD with medically unexplained dyspnea complaints, compared with healthy controls. METHODS: Female patients with SSD (n = 30

A narrative synthesis of the applicability of the CaR-FA-X model in child and adolescent populations: a systematic review.

The CaR-FA-X model [Williams, J. M. G., Barnhofer, T., Crane, C., Hermans, D., Raes, F., Watkins, E., … Dalgleish, T. (2007). Autobiographical memory specificity and emotional disorder. The model comprises of three mechanisms, capture and rumination, functional avoidance and impaired executive control. These can independently, or in interaction, account for OGM. This systematic review aims to eva

Sign language aphasia from a neurodegenerative disease.

While Alois Alzheimer recognized the effects of the disease he described on speech and language in his original description of the disease in 1907, the effects of Alzheimer's disease (AD) on language in deaf signers has not previously been reported. We evaluated a 55-year-old right-handed congenitally deaf woman with a 2-year history of progressive memory loss and a deterioration of her ability to communicate in American Sign Language, which she learned at the age of eight. Examination revealed that she had impaired episodic memory as well as marked impairments in the production and comprehens

Can large language models code meaning-making? A multi-model validation of automated autobiographical reasoning scoring in Chinese adolescent narratives.

Autobiographical reasoning (AR) involves drawing self-relevant meaning from personal experiences. It is central to narrative identity research, but manual coding requires substantial time and trained coders. Large language models (LLMs) have shown promise for automating other narrative coding tasks, but their capacity for meaning-making judgments that may depend on implicit event-self connections remains untested. We collected autobiographical narratives from 437 Chinese high school students and evaluated three LLMs (GPT-4o, DeepSeek-V3, Qwen-Max) across four prompting strategies (zero-shot, c

Temporal-experiential distance in virtual reality shapes past and future episodic simulations and simulation-induced forgetting.

This study investigates the shared constructive processes involved in past- and future-oriented episodic simulations, defined as mentally generating detailed, context-specific events, and examines how temporal-experiential distance shapes these simulations in virtual reality (VR). Young adults used a VR "time machine" that placed them in four temporally cued environments (1980, 2020, 2024, 2060). The near-past and near-future contexts (2020, 2024) fell within participants' current autobiographical lifetime and ongoing personal goals (experiential), whereas the distant-past and distant-future c

Autobiographical memory retrieval in the context of self-schema updating: Does specific recall have power?

Self-schemas are formed from the common elements of past experiences. In clinical contexts, maladaptive negative self-schemas are associated with resistance to therapeutic interventions and prospectively predict a worse course of depression. One possible way to update self-schemas is to recall specific autobiographical events that support or contradict current self-schemas. This study investigated whether retrieving specific autobiographical memories facilitates self-schema updating more effectively than retrieving general memories or no memories. Additionally, the study explored whether depre

Rumination, but not mood, predicts prospective memory performance: novel insights from a derived measure of trait rumination.

Prospective memory (PM) is the accurate execution of an intention in the future. PM may be negatively impacted by negative affect, but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Rumination may increase the frequency of task-irrelevant thoughts, which deplete attentional capacity and reduce performance. To date, no studies have examined state and trait rumination on an online measure of PM. The present study examined the effects of state and trait rumination on an event-based, focal PM task embedded within a one-back task over multiple sessions. 95 non-depressed adults (18-53 years) completed me

Cognitive tasks affect the relationship between representational pattern similarity and subsequent item memory in the hippocampus.

Episodic memories are records of personally experienced events, coded neurally via the hippocampus and surrounding medial temporal lobe cortex. Information about the neural signal corresponding to a memory representation can be measured in fMRI data when the pattern across voxels is examined. Prior studies have found that similarity in the voxel patterns across repetition of a to-be-remembered stimulus predicts later memory retrieval, but the results are inconsistent across studies. The current study investigates the possibility that cognitive goals (defined here via the task instructions give
