Bringing back the nearly dead. The hope and the challenge.

Despite widespread use of cardiopulmonary resuscitation, sudden cardiac arrest outside of a hospital setting results in death most of the time. Hoping to improve resuscitation outcomes, University of Minnesota researchers have focused their efforts on understanding cardiopulmonary physiology and improving resuscitation technologies and procedures. This article describes new technologies, designed to be used in conjunction with standard CPR, that promote recovery from cardiac arrest. Active compression-decompression CPR, which involves use of a suction cup device to draw more blood into the hea…

The role of the poison center in veterinary poisonings: a survey.

The number of veterinary poisonings presented to this poison center has grown to over 1200 cases annually. To make sure that the poison center is working cooperatively with local veterinarians, a survey was sent out to 237 veterinary clinics state-wide. Of particular interest was whether the poison center had a role to play in the treatment of minor poisonings in companion animals. The results of 77 returned surveys indicate that the poison center is currently a major source of poison information and 95% of responders were satisfied with the information received; 73% felt that all minor ingest

Serodiagnosis of histoplasmosis.

The standard serologic tests for diagnosis of histoplasmosis include the complement fixation test (CF), which is quite sensitive, and the immunodiffusion test (ID), which is fairly specific. Radioimmunoassay (RIA) is an experimental serological test even more sensitive than CF, but also less specific. Problems with the specificity of serodiagnosis are addressed followed by a discussion of the sensitivity of the three tests in the different forms of histoplasmosis-chronic cavitary histoplasmosis, progressive disseminated histoplasmosis, and acute pulmonary histoplasmosis. Next, serologic result

Toxicology screening in the emergency department: ethanol, barbiturates, and salicylates.

A review of 737 limited toxicological screens performed in a municipal teaching hospital over one calendar year was conducted to determine the value of performing analyses for ethanol, salicylates, and barbiturates. Less than 5% of salicylate determinations and less than 2% of barbiturate tests yielded positive results. On the other hand, ethanol was present in over 70% of cases. The low number of positive results and the cost do not justify analyzing for salicylates or barbiturates unless their presence is suspected. Ethanol determinations should be limited to patients without an obviously co

Gilles de la Tourette syndrome: clinical and genetic studies in a midwestern city.

Clinical and genetic observations of Gilles de la Tourette syndrome were carried out on members of 14 families from the Minneapolis area. An unusual number of the families were of Jewish and other Eastern European ancestry, and in all but one of these families multiple members were affected. These observations parallel our earlier findings based on 21 families from the New York City area. Together with recent evidence indicating relative instability of a specific enzyme in some patients, these observations suggest that there is a genetically determined form of Gilles de la Tourette syndrome.

Mayo Clinic Framework for Community-Engaged Research: Development, Implementation, and Impact.

Mayo Clinic addresses community health needs by integrating community expertise and collaboratively identifying and responding to community health priorities. Community-engaged research (CEnR), encompassing a continuum of engagement from raising awareness to co-ownership of research efforts, helps operationalize this commitment. Mayo Clinic's CEnR efforts are guided by principles that emphasize community context, sustained partnerships, integration of community perspectives across the research process, and evaluation of community-centered outcomes. The CEnR Program at Mayo Clinic is coordinate

Microbial dysbiosis is associated with aggressive histology and adverse clinical outcome in B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma cell survival depends on poorly understood immune evasion mechanisms. In melanoma, the composition of the gut microbiota (GMB) is associated with immune system regulation and response to immunotherapy. We investigated the association of GMB composition and diversity with lymphoma biology and treatment outcome. Patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), marginal zone (MZL), and follicular lymphoma (FL) were recruited at Mayo Clinic, Minnesota, and Perlmutter Cancer Center, NYU Langone Health. The pretreatment GMB was analyzed using 16S ribosomal RNA gene se…

Evaluation of solar photovoltaic systems to shade cows in a pasture-based dairy herd.

The combined use of solar photovoltaics and agriculture may provide farmers with an alternative source of income and reduce heat stress in dairy cows. The objective of this study was to determine the effects on grazing cattle under shade from a solar photovoltaic system. The study was conducted at the University of Minnesota West Central Research and Outreach Center in Morris, Minnesota on a grazing dairy. Twenty-four crossbred cows were randomly assigned to 2 treatment groups (shade or no shade) from June to September in 2019. The replicated (n = 4) treatment groups of 6 cows each were provid…
