Humoral and cell-mediated immune responses of beef and dairy cattle experimentally infested with Psoroptes ovis.

OBJECTIVE: To compare cellular and humoral immune responses of beef (Belgian White and Blue [BWB]) and dairy (Friesian-Holstein [FH]) cattle to Psoroptes ovis infestation and to determine whether P ovis infestation impaired immune responses to infectious bovine rhinotracheitis virus (IBR) vaccine or an immunogenic protein (keyhole-limpet hemocyanin [KLH]). ANIMALS: 19 BWB and 6 FH 1-year-old calves. PROCEDURE: 2 trials were performed. In each trial, 7 (trial 1) or 6 (trial 2) BWB calves and 3 FH calves were experimentally infested with P ovis and 3 BWB calves were maintained as uninfested co

Repellency Potential of Tomato Herbivore-Induced Volatiles Against the Greenhouse Whitefly (Trialeurodes vaporariorum) (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae).

The greenhouse whitefly, Trialeurode vaporariorum, is among the key pests of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) in sub-Saharan Africa with Tuta absoluta, spider mite, thrips, and fruitworms. To understand the interaction between the pest and the plant's herbivory-induced plant volatile (HIPVs), we investigated the repellency of four tomato cultivars (Kilele F1, Assila F1, Red Beauty F1, and Nemonneta F1) upon infestation by Trialeurode vaporariorum. We analyzed the behavioral response of T. vaporariorum to infested and uninfested tomato plants of these cultivars using olfactory bioassays followed b

Crusted scabies is associated with increased IL-17 secretion by skin T cells.

Scabies is an ectoparasitic infestation by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei. Although commonly self-limiting, a fraction of patients develop severely debilitating crusted scabies. The immune mechanisms underlying the development of crusted scabies are unclear, and undertaking longitudinal infection studies in humans is difficult. We utilized a porcine model to compare cellular immune responses in peripheral blood and skin of pigs with different clinical manifestations of scabies (n = 12), and in uninfected controls (n = 6). Although clinical symptoms were not evident until at least 4 weeks post-infe

Survey of the prevalence, diagnosis and treatment of dermatological conditions in small animals in general practice.

A survey was made of the prevalence, diagnosis and treatment of dermatological conditions in small animals in general practice in the UK. Out of 3707 small animal consultations in general practice that were observed and recorded, 795 (21.4 per cent) involved animals that had a dermatological problem. In dogs and exotic species, pruritus was the most common presenting sign, accounting for 30 to 40 per cent of the dermatological consultations. In cats, cutaneous swellings were the most common presentation (36 per cent). A diagnosis or recommendation for treatment was made on the basis of the pre

[Some aspects of the skin infestation by Demodex folliculorum].

The importance of demodicids (Demodex folliculorum and D. brevis) infestation and their effect on skin lesions has been described based on literature data and our own clinical and parasitological investigations. Hair follicle mites have been detected in 45% of patients with rosacea, 27% of patients with perioral dermatitis, 28% of patients suffering from seborrhoeic dermatitis and in 3 out of 7 patients with chronic blepharitis. Clinical picture of demodecosis included erythemato-papulous and pustulous (rosacea-like) skin lesions together with erythemato-desquamative changes of the face.

Treatment of scabies with ivermectin.

The authors report six new cases of patients suffering from severe infestation with the mite sarcoptes scabiei, treated with ivermectin, currently the only oral therapy available for this disease. Each patient received 200 mug/kg of ivermectin, taken as single dose. No topical therapy was undertaken, except for topical treatment with emollient, as needed. The drug was very effective in all cases, easy to use, safe, and particularly useful in those patients with secondary eczematisation and escoriations, for whom the topical treatments are irritant and less well tolerated.

Scabies in children.

We are in the midst of a pandemic of scabies. Classic scabies is seen less frequently in the current cycle. The infestation frequently occurs in special forms, the differential diagnosis of which includes nearly every pruritic dermatosis. The cause of the current pandemic is not clear but there is evidence that immunologic factors, particularly delayed hypersensitivity, play a principal role. The diagnosis should be made with certainty, preferably by identifying the mite prior to instituting therapy. The modern scabicides are highly effective. A recent re-evaluation of the risk-benefit relatio

Spatiotemporal, environmental, and behavioral predictors of Varroa mite intensity in managed honey bee apiaries.

Honey bees contribute substantially to the world economy through pollination services and honey production. In the U.S. alone, honey bee pollination is estimated to contribute at least $11 billion annually, primarily through the pollination of specialty crops. However, beekeepers lose about half of their hives every season due to disease, insecticides, and other environmental factors. Here, we explore and validate a spatiotemporal statistical model of Varroa destructor mite burden (in mites/300 bees) in managed honey bee colonies, exploring the impact of both environmental factors and beekeepe

Approaches for sampling the twospotted spider mite (Acari: Tetranychidae) on clementines in Spain.

Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae) is an important pest of clementine mandarins, Citrus reticulata Blanco, in Spain. As a first step toward the development of an integrated crop management program for clementines, dispersion patterns of T. urticae females were determined for different types of leaves and fruit. The study was carried out between 2001 and 2003 in different commercial clementine orchards in the provinces of Castelló and Tarragona (northeastern Spain). We found that symptomatic leaves (those exhibiting typical chlorotic spots) harbored 57.1% of the total mite counts.

The efficacy of an imidacloprid/moxidectin combination against naturally acquired Sarcoptes scabiei infestations on dogs.

The study was undertaken to evaluate and compare the efficacy of an imidacloprid (10% w/v)/moxidectin (2.5% w/v) combination (Advocate Bayer HealthCare, Animal Health) with that of selamectin for the treatment of Sarcoptes scabiei on dogs. Thirty naturally infested dogs, of which one was later withdrawn because of distemper, were allocated to two equal groups and individually housed. The dogs in each group were treated twice, four weeks apart, with either the combination product (0.1 mL/kg body weight) or with selamectin (0.05 mL/kg body weight) administered topically. Skin scrapings were made

Efficacy of eprinomectin 5 mg/mL topical solution administered twice pour on at 1 mg per kg body weight against sarcoptic mange (Sarcoptes scabiei) in sheep.

Sarcoptic mange of sheep is a skin disease which compromises the health and welfare of the animals, impacts their productivity and is zoonotic. In Europe, sarcoptic mange appears to be the prevailing type of mange affecting sheep kept for milk production in the Mediterranean countries. Eprinomectin 5 mg/mL topical solution (EPRINEX® Multi, Boehringer Ingelheim) was recently authorized for the treatment of gastrointestinal and pulmonary nematodes and Oestrus ovis in sheep with zero hours milk withdrawal in several countries in Europe. As the product in cattle has claims against a broad range of

Post-scabies Dermatitis Mimicking Treatment Failure: A Diagnostic Challenge.

Scabies is a common parasitic infestation caused by Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis and is typically treated effectively with topical permethrin or oral ivermectin. After successful eradication, persistent pruritus and inflammatory skin lesions may still be present, leading to diagnostic uncertainty and unnecessary retreatment. We report a case of a 69-year-old male who developed persistent pruritic erythematous papules and eczematous plaques following appropriate permethrin and ivermectin therapy for confirmed scabies. Clinical reassessment and dermatology evaluation revealed no evidence of ac

First evidence of resistance to macrocyclic lactones in Psoroptes ovis sheep scab mites in the UK.

Ovine psoroptic mange (sheep scab) is an infection of substantial economic and animal welfare concern in the UK. Its prevalence has increased rapidly over the last 20 years and management is dependent on a small number of acaricidal compounds, many of which are also used to control a range of other endoparasites and ectoparasites. Here, the effects of the macrocyclic lactone (ML) moxidectin was considered using in vitro assays against mites from four farm populations where persistent treatment failure had been reported: two in West Wales, one from the England/Wales border and one in Herefordsh
