Pushing boundaries in paediatric intensive care: training as a paediatric retrieval nurse practitioner.

Traditionally in the UK, the transportation of the critically ill child to a paediatric intensive care unit has been carried out by a medically led team of doctors and nurses. However, in countries such as the USA and Canada, appropriately trained nurse practitioners have proven to be competent in the transportation of these vulnerable children. This nurse-led team model has also been shown to be successful in the speciality of neonatal care in the UK. The impact of changes in the National Health Service (NHS) has led to an increased demand for the transportation of the child requiring paediat

Beyond the Ratios: Evidence for Optimal Minimum Nurse-Patient-Ratios in Medical-Surgical Settings.

AIM: To evaluate the maximum number of patients per nurse before quality and safety outcomes deteriorate in medical-surgical settings. DESIGN: A secondary analysis of cross-sectional survey data. METHODS: We analysed data from 609 direct care nurses working in British Columbia's medical-surgical areas. The relationship between nurse-to-patient ratios and quality and safety outcomes was analysed using both two-level and one-level regression models, including visualisations such as boxplots and scatterplots with LOESS curves. The analysis controlled for nurse demographics and hospital clusteri

An observational study of antipsychotic medication use among long-stay nursing home residents without qualifying diagnoses.

UNLABELLED: WHAT IS KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT?: In the United States, 15.5% of nursing home residents without qualifying diagnoses of schizophrenia, Huntington's' Disease, and/or Tourette Syndrome receive antipsychotic medications. Antipsychotic medications are used off-label (i.e., used in a manner the United States Food and Drug Administration's packaging insert does not specify) to treat neuropsychiatric symptoms, often before attempting nonpharmacologic interventions, despite evidence that this drug class is associated with significant adverse events including death. Less than optimal staffing

Parents' decision to use e-consults in preventive youth health care: A cross-sectional study on parental and nurse factors.

Using digital health interventions in prevention programs for families with young children is often optional for parents. In preventive youth health care, nurses routinely discuss availability and suitability of this option with parents. It remains unknown what drives parental decision-making and which factors influence the decision regarding use of e-consults. This study aimed to identify which nurse and parent factors are related to the parents' decision. Data of 718 parents and 41 nurses were collected. It turned out that the option e-consult was not discussed with 206 parents. Generalized

Incivility from patients and their families: can organisational justice protect nurses from burnout?

AIM: To determine whether interpersonal and informational justice influence the association between daily experiences of incivility and burnout among nurses. BACKGROUND: Research has suggested that incivility is a concern for managers. Nurses regularly experience incivility, particularly from their patients and patients' families. Incivility, in turn, can increase symptoms of burnout. METHOD: Seventy-five nurses provided data on interpersonal and informational justice within their organisation. During five working days, nurses completed a twice-daily survey assessing incivility and burnout.

Nightingale theory and intentional comfort touch in management of tinea pedis in vulnerable populations.

Vulnerable populations, specifically migrant farm workers and persons experiencing homelessness, are often at an increased risk for foot infections. This risk is related to their working and living conditions, socioeconomic status, limited access to health care, frequent exposure to wet environments, limited access to clean and dry socks and shoes, bathing or laundry facilities, and daily routines that requires them to be on their feet for long periods of time. After years of caring for these populations and hundreds of clinical encounters, an evidence-based, effective method of foot care that
