The effects of gated speech on the fluency of speakers who stutter.

It is known that the speech of people who stutter improves when the speaker's own vocalization is changed while the participant is speaking. One explanation of these effects is the disruptive rhythm hypothesis (DRH). The DRH maintains that the manipulated sound only needs to disturb timing to affect speech control. The experiment investigated whether speech that was gated on and off (interrupted) affected the speech control of speakers who stutter. Eight children who stutter read a passage when they heard their voice normally and when the speech was gated. Fluency was enhanced (fewer errors we

Constructing an integrated model of the antecedents of adolescent smoking.

OBJECTIVE: Reviews have called for integrative, theoretically informed models of the 'hundreds of associations' (Miller & Slap, 1989, p. 131) between psychosocial measures and adolescent smoking (e. g. Tyas & Pederson, 1998). Such a model was tested. METHOD: A prospective, classroom-based survey measuring previously identified correlates of smoking allowed comparison of the strength of relationships between antecedents and smoking status six months later. The prospective sample included 225 13 to 14-year-olds. Measures of behaviour-specific cognitions derived from the Theory of Planned Behavi

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction in Post-treatment Breast Cancer Patients: Immediate and Sustained Effects Across Multiple Symptom Clusters.

CONTEXT: Breast cancer survivors (BCS) face adverse physical and psychological symptoms, often co-occurring. Biologic and psychological factors may link symptoms within clusters, distinguishable by prevalence and/or severity. Few studies have examined the effects of behavioral interventions or treatment of symptom clusters. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to identify symptom clusters among post-treatment BCS and determine symptom cluster improvement following the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction for Breast Cancer (MBSR(BC)) program. METHODS: Three hundred twenty-two Stage 0-III post-

Risk and protective factors of psychological pain using machine learning.

Psychological pain is of vital importance due to its link to suicidality. The present study sought to examine the psychometric properties of A Brief Measure of Unbearable Psychache, to investigate the roles of psychological distress, pessimism, meaning in life, hope, and demographic variables (age, gender, perceived economic status, marital status, and education level) in predicting psychological pain, to construct an optimal prediction model using a machine learning approach, to rank the feature importance of the possible predictors of psychological pain and to explain the contributions and d

Integrating predictive frameworks and cognitive models of face perception.

The idea of a "predictive brain"-that is, the interpretation of internal and external information based on prior expectations-has been elaborated intensely over the past decade. Several domains in cognitive neuroscience have embraced this idea, including studies in perception, motor control, language, and affective, social, and clinical neuroscience. Despite the various studies that have used face stimuli to address questions related to predictive processing, there has been surprisingly little connection between this work and established cognitive models of face recognition. Here we suggest th

"MY RESISTING GETTING WELL": NEURASTHENIA AND SUBCONSCIOUS CONFLICT IN PATIENT-PSYCHIATRIST INTERACTIONS IN PREWAR AMERICA.

This study examines experiences of individual patients and psychiatrists in the Henry Phipps Psychiatric Clinic at Johns Hopkins between 1913 and 1917. The dynamics of these patient-psychiatrist interactions elucidate the well-known conceptual shift in explanations of mental illness during the twentieth century, from somatic models rooted in the logic of "neurasthenia" and damaged nerves to psychodynamic models based on the notion of "subconscious conflict." A qualitative analysis of 336 cases categorized as functional disorders (a catchall term in this period for illnesses that could not be c

Hippocampus and retrograde amnesia in the rat model: a modest proposal for the situation of systems consolidation.

The properties of retrograde amnesia after damage to the hippocampus have been explicated with some success using a rat model of human medial temporal lobe amnesia. We review the results of this experimental work with rats focusing on several areas of consensus in this growing literature. We evaluate the theoretically significant hypothesis that hippocampal retrograde amnesia normally exhibits a temporal gradient, affecting recent, but sparing remote memories. Surprisingly, the evidence does not provide much support for the idea that there is a lengthy process of systems consolidation followin

Response of hostile individuals to stressful changes in their working lives: test of a psychosocial vulnerability model.

BACKGROUND: According to the psychosocial vulnerability model, the health of hostile individuals is at greater risk than that of non-hostile individuals, due partly to lesser ability of the former to cope with psychosocial stress situations. We examined whether hostile individuals were more vulnerable than others to health problems when faced with stressful changes in their working lives. METHODS: Hostility, sickness absence and psychosocial stressors in 866 local government employees over a 5-year period, which included severe economic decline, were investigated. Hostility was measured by a

Dissociation, somatization, and affect dysregulation: the complexity of adaptation of trauma.

OBJECTIVE: A century of clinical research has noted a range of trauma-related psychological problems that are not captured in the DSM-IV framework of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This study investigated the relationships between exposure to extreme stress, the emergence of PTSD, and symptoms traditionally associated with "hysteria," which can be understood as problems with stimulus discrimination, self-regulation, and cognitive integration of experience. METHOD: The DSM-IV field trial for PTSD studied 395 traumatized treatment-seeking subjects and 125 non-treatment-seeking subjects w

Psychological flexibility and psychological distress among nurses: a longitudinal study of the mediating role of second victim experience and the moderating role of self-compassion.

Due to the constant exposure of nurses to clinical errors and their ethical and professional consequences, this group is exposed to the experience of second victim, which could affect their mental health. The aim of this study was to investigate the longitudinal relationships between psychological flexibility and psychological distress, considering the mediating role of the second victim experience and the moderating role of self-compassion. This longitudinal study was conducted with two waves of data from 270 nurses in six private hospitals in Tehran (mean age 25.22 years, SD=± 6.78). Data we

Itch Management: Psychotherapeutic Approach.

A relationship between the intensity of itch and psychological factors like stress, coping, anxiety, and depression has often been shown in patients with skin diseases. Moreover, the biopsychosocial model of chronic itch nicely summarizes how psychological factors can contribute to a worsening or improvement of chronic itch. Thus, it is reasonable to consider psychological interventions in the treatment of chronic itch. In this chapter we focus on itch-scratch problems as well as stress and anxiety/depression as itch-increasing factors. We summarize the evidence of psychological interventions

Intimate partner abuse and PTSD symptomatology: examining mediators and moderators of the abuse-trauma link.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has been linked to intimate partner abuse, physiological reactivity, and social support. The authors used structural equation modeling to test social support as a moderator and psychophysiological reactivity and anger as mediators of the relation between abuse and traumatic symptoms among a sample of women reporting psychological abuse, including women reporting both physical violence and no physical violence. Both physical and psychological abuse were related to PTSD symptoms. Whereas physical and psychological abuse were highly correlated, psychological a

Geodesic Ability in Unidimensional IRT Models: A Geometric Perspective on Parametrization Invariance.

Psychometric models use latent variables to quantify psychological traits, but statistical and substantive inferences based on these variables may depend on how the latent scale is parametrized. Consequently, the same fitted model can yield qualitatively different conclusions under different parametrizations. Building on Ramsay's (1996, Behaviormetrika, 23, 3-16) geometric perspective, we reinterpret this problem using differential geometry. While Ramsay defined ability via an arc length in Euclidean space, psychometric models can be seen instead as a curved statistical manifold with the Fishe

Predictors of alcohol use disorder risk in young adults: Direct and indirect psychological paths through binge drinking.

Alcohol-use disorders (AUD) risk is highly prevalent in university students, and is associated with both intraindividual (e.g., metacognitions, personality traits) and interindividual (e.g., social motives, drinking identity, drinking norms) psychological factors. Binge drinking (BD) also constitutes a widespread drinking pattern in youth, distinct from AUD risk and mainly predicted by interindividual factors. As BD is itself a risk factor for AUD, we tested a dual psychological path model to AUD risk, combining a direct path (including intra/interindividual factors independent from BD) with a

The Effect of Psychological Factors on COVID-19 Vaccination Side Effects: A Cross-Sectional Survey in South Korea.

OBJECTIVE: Side effects from the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) vaccine, such as pain, headache, nausea, and fatigue, have caused vaccine hesitancy. Research on the effects of psychological factors on COVID-19 vaccine side effects is insufficient. This study aims to investigate the effect of psychological factors on COVID-19 vaccination side effects. METHODS: We recruited a total of 226 individuals registered for the COVID-19 vaccine in Seoul, South Korea, for this study. Participants completed a pre-vaccination questionnaire, including the 5C antecedents of vaccination, and a survey of

Cumulative ecological risk, dysfunctional beliefs and attitudes about sleep, and sleep quality among Chinese adolescents: the indirect association of psychological distress.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent sleep problems have gained increasing attention; however, systematic research integrating both external environmental and internal cognitive factors is still lacking. This study focuses on Chinese adolescents and investigates the associations among cumulative ecological risk, dysfunctional beliefs and attitudes about sleep, psychological distress, and sleep quality. The goal is to examine the potential indirect associations involving psychological distress within the context of cognitive and environmental factors. METHODS: This study employed a random sampling method to

Basic Psychological Needs and Mental Health in Primary Care: A Self-Determination Theory Perspective.

Mental health concerns are increasingly encountered in primary care, yet clinical approaches often focus on symptom management rather than underlying psychological processes. Self-Determination Theory (SDT) proposes that psychological well-being depends on the satisfaction of three basic psychological needs-autonomy, competence, and relatedness-while their chronic frustration contributes to psychological distress. Despite extensive evidence linking these needs to mental health outcomes, their relevance in primary care remains underexplored. This single-center cross-sectional study examined ass
