Evaluation of a geriatric mental health training program for nursing personnel in rural long-term care facilities.

Although mental illness among elderly living in nursing homes is a substantial and growing concern, the behavioral problems associated with mental illness or threats to mental health are not well understood, tolerated, or effectively managed by nursing home staff. As a result, resident care and quality of life, and staff morale often suffer. The need for geriatric mental health training in long-term care settings has become increasingly apparent. Psychiatric/mental health nurses are in an advantageous position to address this current need and future challenge through the development, implement…

Normative commitments constrain the scope of cultural tinkering.

We argue that cultural innovations are local not only due to agent myopia and cognitive constraints but also because of normative pressures. Social tinkering produces coordination solutions that feel fair and right, and such solutions create a precedent for future interactions whose moral force consolidates over time.

The association between political identity centrality and cancelling proclivity.

Augmented by the rise of social media, contemporary culture has increasingly witnessed the phenomenon of "cancellation" - that is, a brand's swift and public fall from grace, catalyzed through digital platforms like Twitter and, in turn, traditional media. We are the first to examine individual difference predictors of cancelling proclivity. We explore the relationship between a novel individual difference, political identity centrality (the extent to which one's political identity [e.g., liberal, conservative] is central to self-concept), and individuals' propensity to seek retribution from a

To kill a bee: The aptness and moralistic heuristics of reactive attitudes.

Although we are sensitive to the advantages of reactive attitudes as a starting point, we are concerned that confusion on the level of analysis can easily plague this type of account. We argue that what is needed here is a serious appraisal of the effects on the promotion of values of moralistic responses toward different types of agency.

Weaponised Concern: Moralised Discourses of Care as Mechanisms of Regulation in Professional Nursing.

Workplace bullying in nursing is commonly defined through overt hostility, yet less visible forms of regulation often operate through the language of care itself. This paper examines how discourses of concern, kindness, and professionalism can function as mechanisms of moral regulation within professional nursing. Drawing on feminist critical theory, we introduce the concept of weaponised concern to describe how ostensibly benevolent expressions of worry about a colleague's well-being or coping may redirect attention away from substantive critique and towards the presumed psychological state o

"It's Not Literally True, But You Get the Gist:" How nuanced understandings of truth encourage people to condone and spread misinformation.

People have a more-nuanced view of misinformation than the binary distinction between "fake news" and "real news" implies. We distinguish between the truth of a statement's verbatim details (i.e., the specific, literal information) and its gist (i.e., the general, overarching meaning), and suggest that people tolerate and intentionally spread misinformation in part because they believe its gist. That is, even when they recognize a claim as literally false, they may judge it as morally acceptable to spread because they believe it is true "in spirit." Prior knowledge, partisanship, and imaginati

How useful is Leuven personalism in the world of bioethics? The test case of artificial insemination.

Personalism in ethics denotes any system based upon the value of the person. Several versions of personalist morals have been developed over the past 50 years. Some have had particular interest in the field of medical ethics. Here the question is being studied about one such system, the so-called Leuven personalist morals and its usefulness in today's world of bioethics. In order to test the usefulness of this system the case of artificial insemination is examined both in the early 1970s in the context of the Leuven clinics and, subsequently, in the 1990s in a US policy document. The investiga

BackgroundBurnout and emotional numbing-known in Scandinavian contexts as forråelse-pose critical challenges for psychiatric healthcare professionals. These phenomena are closely linked to moral distress, ethical dilemmas, and systemic pressures that complicate daily clinical practice. Understanding the interplay between organizational constraints, moral agency, and relational dynamics is essential for ethical and sustainable mental healthcare.Research aimThe study aims to examine how organizational and ethical pressures contribute to burnout and emotional numbing among psychiatric healthcare

Consent and compensation: a social compact for smallpox vaccine policy in the event of an attack.

In the event of a widespread biological attack involving smallpox, it may not only be morally permissible, but morally obligatory, to dispense with the ordinary requirements of informed consent for vaccination. The government should also commit to educating the public about the vaccine, distributing the vaccine efficiently and fairly, and ensuring access to health care to those who experience adverse events as a result of vaccination. In addition, the government should provide a program of financial compensation for any persons who experience permanent disability as a consequence of vaccinatio

Diagnosing child maltreatment in a welfare state: the dual role of Danish general practitioners in child protection.

Child maltreatment is a pervasive global concern, and general practitioners, like other health care professionals, are legally and ethically obliged to report suspicions of abuse or neglect. In practice, however, general practitioners face moral and practical dilemmas in balancing their duty to report with their commitment to care, as they seek to support children and families who may be at risk. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork in Danish general practice, this paper examines how these tensions unfold in everyday clinical encounters. It explores how general practitioners navigate the ambiguou

Dignity as recognition respect: lessons from the cases of Charlie Gard, Alfie Evans and Isaiah Haastrup.

Charlie Gard, Alfie Evans, and Isaiah Haastrup were infants at the centre of highly publicised court proceedings in the United Kingdom concerning the permissibility of continuing life-sustaining treatment in the face of devastating neurological injury. In each case, the court authorised withdrawal of treatment in favour of palliative care, concluding that the infants should be allowed to die with dignity. The properties commonly thought to ground dignity-such as sentience, rational capacity, or human flourishing-however, were either absent or not threatened by continued treatment, creating an

Dissecting the Predictors of Cyber-Aggression Through an Explainable Machine Learning Model.

The general aggression model (GAM) suggests that cyber-aggression stems from individual characteristics and situational contexts. Previous studies have focused on limited factors using linear models, leading to oversimplified predictions. This study used the light gradient boosting machine (LightGBM) to identify and rank the importance of various risk and protective factors in cyber-aggression. The SHAP (SHapley Additive exPlanations) technique estimated each variable's predictive effects, and two-dimensional partial dependence (PD) Plots examined interactions among predictors. Among 30 potent

The dark silence: Dark triad personality traits as predictors of quiet quitting intention.

Prior studies have found associations between dark triad personality traits and counterproductive work behaviours. However, the link between the dark triad traits and quiet quitting has not been investigated in the literature. Moreover, little is known about the psychological mechanism underlying this relationship. This study sought to investigate the link between dark triad personality traits and quiet quitting intention of senior-level managers. Additionally, the role of psychological entitlement and moral disengagement was evaluated in this relationship. A cross-sectional survey-based desig

Bioethics and corruption: a personal struggle.

The author attempts to give a general picture of corruption, especially in the area of healthcare. Corruption ranges from fraud, through deceit, bribery and dehumanisation, to immeasurable moral decay. As a bioethicist who has challenged corruption in various ways, the author approaches this worldwide plague mainly on the basis of his personal experience. He does not offer a recipe for successfully combating corruption, but tries to provide some ways and means to fight immorality without self-defeat. Bioethics is not a discipline whose task is to investigate, expose, or punish corrupt people.

Perceptions and evaluations of child transgressions and disciplinary techniques in high- and low-risk mothers and their children.

Perceptions and evaluations of children's transgressions (moral, conventional, personal), parental disciplinary actions (power assertion, love withdrawal, induction), and expected outcomes (compliance) were assessed in matched high- and low-risk (for physical abuse) mothers and their children. High-risk mothers and their children evaluated conventional and personal transgressions as more wrong than low-risk mothers and their children. Although both high- and low-risk mothers and their children varied disciplinary responses according to the type of transgression, high-risk mothers used power as

Medical decisions influenced by eugenics: Hungarian gynecological practices during the 1910s.

This study contributes to the discussion on the development of eugenics in Central-Eastern Europe by tracing the way that eugenic ideas entered into medical decision-making in Hungary. Through a case study that reviews the professional argumentation of the gynecological management of tuberculosis pregnancies, this paper shows that the subordination of individual reproductive rights to state interests was influenced by the ideas of eugenics, which had begun to enter into the professional public health discourse. A eugenically informed morality was envisioned, to guide decision-making in the int

Rationalization and Reflection Differentially Modulate Prior Attitudes Toward the Purity Domain.

Outside Western, predominantly secular-liberal environments, norms restricting bodily and sexual conduct are widespread. Moralization in the so-called purity domain has been treated as evidence that some putative violations are victimless. However, respondents themselves disagree: They often report that private yet indecent acts incur self-harm, or harm to one's family and the wider community-a result which we replicate in Study 1. We then distinguish two cognitive processes that could generate a link between harmfulness and immorality, and recreate them in Studies 2 and 3: Colombian and Briti

[A Case of Uterine Rupture during Pregnancy].

The article presents a rare case of uterine rupture at the 19th week of gestation, in the presence of a scar after a caesarean section practiced two years earlier. The fetus was pulled out alive, but given the gestational age, died within a few minutes. The uterus was preserved, but the woman was advised to proceed with tubal ligation and, in any case, to absolutely avoid a new pregnancy. The literature on uterine rupture is examined focusing on the problem of uterine rupture resulting after a caesarean section, analyzing the possibility of monitoring the risk of rupture through ultrasound eva
