Comparison of Aedes aegypti arbovirus transmission thresholds in two communities with differing water supply infrastructure.

BACKGROUND: To assess whether the 'economic boom' in the tropical seaport city of Barranquilla improved tapped water supplies to socio-economically poor neighbourhoods resulting in: (1) their reduced use for domestic water-storage in large (> 1,000-litre) custom-made cement tanks which are their principal Aedes aegypti breeding sites and (2) their pupae/person index (PPI) values to below their established 0.5-1.5 PPI arbovirus transmission-threshold value, compared to matched neighbourhoods in the: (a) pre-economic boom (2004) period in Barranquilla and (b) economically-neglected seaport city

Scalable camera traps for measuring the attractiveness of sugar baits for controlling malaria and dengue vectors.

BACKGROUND: Attractive targeted sugar baits (ATSBs) are promising new interventions that can complement existing vector control tools. However, reproducible and quantitative information on the level of attractiveness of ATSBs under field conditions is needed. Therefore, we customized camera traps for close-up imaging. We integrated them into a rugged ATSB monitoring station for day and nighttime recording of mosquitoes landing on the bait. METHODS: The camera traps were evaluated in a semifield system and then in the field in rural Tanzania. In semifield experiments, camera traps were set up

Host feeding preferences of malaria vectors in an area of low malaria transmission.

Studying the behaviour and trophic preferences of mosquitoes is an important step in understanding the exposure of vertebrate hosts to vector-borne diseases. In the case of human malaria, transmission increases when mosquitoes feed more on humans than on other animals. Therefore, understanding the spatio-temporal dynamics of vectors and their feeding preferences is essential for improving vector control measures. In this study, we investigated the feeding behaviour of Anopheles mosquitoes at two sites in the Sudanian areas of Senegal where transmission is low following the implementation of ve

Multi-centre discriminating concentration determination of broflanilide and potential for cross-resistance to other public health insecticides in Anopheles vector populations.

Novel insecticides are urgently needed to control insecticide-resistant populations of Anopheles malaria vectors. Broflanilide acts as a non-competitive antagonist of the gamma-aminobutyric acid receptor and has shown prolonged effectiveness as an indoor residual spraying product (VECTRON T500) in experimental hut trials against pyrethroid-resistant vector populations. This multi-centre study expanded upon initial discriminating concentration testing of broflanilide, using six Anopheles insectary colonies (An. gambiae Kisumu KCMUCo, An. gambiae Kisumu NIMR, An. arabiensis KGB, An. arabiensis S

High Aedes spp. larval indices in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo.

BACKGROUND: Dengue, yellow fever, chikungunya and Zika are among the most important emerging infectious vector-borne diseases worldwide. In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), increases in cases of dengue and outbreaks of yellow fever and chikungunya have been reported since 2010. The main vectors of these arboviruses, Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus, have been reported in DRC, but there is a lack of detailed information on their presence and spread to guide disease control efforts. METHODS: In 2018, two cross-sectional surveys were conducted in Kinshasa province (DRC), one in the rain

A microsporidian impairs Plasmodium falciparum transmission in Anopheles arabiensis mosquitoes.

A possible malaria control approach involves the dissemination in mosquitoes of inherited symbiotic microbes to block Plasmodium transmission. However, in the Anopheles gambiae complex, the primary African vectors of malaria, there are limited reports of inherited symbionts that impair transmission. We show that a vertically transmitted microsporidian symbiont (Microsporidia MB) in the An. gambiae complex can impair Plasmodium transmission. Microsporidia MB is present at moderate prevalence in geographically dispersed populations of An. arabiensis in Kenya, localized to the mosquito midgut and

Dynamics of malaria vector indices in two vegetation zones within North Eastern Adamawa State, Nigeria.

Studies profiling community and zonal malaria entomological risk indices are required to identify high risk areas where targeted control resources are most needed or likely to have the greatest impact on reducing risk of malaria infection. This study presents a first report on malaria vector risk indices in two vegetation zones within Adamawa state, Nigeria. Endophilic mosquitoes were collected for one year in selected communities in the Guinea and Sudan savanna zones within the State. Plasmodium falciparum Sporozoite and human blood meal ELISA assays were carried out on the female Anopheles m

Attrition, physical integrity and insecticidal activity of long-lasting insecticidal nets in sub-Saharan Africa and modelling of their impact on vectorial capacity.

BACKGROUND: Long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) are the primary malaria prevention and control intervention in many parts of sub-Saharan Africa. While LLINs are expected to last at least 3 years under normal use conditions, they can lose effectiveness because they fall out of use, are discarded, repurposed, physically damaged, or lose insecticidal activity. The contributions of these different interrelated factors to durability of nets and their protection against malaria have been unclear. METHODS: Starting in 2009, LLIN durability studies were conducted in seven countries in Africa over

Effect of LongRange™ eprinomectin on Anopheles arabiensis by feeding on calves treated with the drug.

BACKGROUND: Misuse of long-lasting insecticidal nets together with resistance of vectors to most of the insecticides for indoor residual spraying and impregnated nets threaten malaria vector control interventions, requiring search for alternative control methods. Reports have shown that Anopheles mosquitoes die when they feed on endectocidal drugs used to treat humans and animals. A study was designed to investigate the efficacy of LongRange™ (eprinomectin 5%) on laboratory reared Anopheles arabiensis fed on treated calves. METHODS: Anopheles arabiensis from insectary colony was fed on three

Phytochemical analysis of Rhazya stricta extract and its use in fabrication of silver nanoparticles effective against mosquito vectors and microbial pathogens.

Worldwide, billions of people are at risk from viruses, parasites and bacteria transmitted by mosquitoes, ticks, fleas and other vectors. Over exploitation of chemical pesticides to overcome the mosquito borne diseases led to detrimental effects on environment and human health. The present research aims to explore bio-fabrication of metal silver nanomaterials using Rhazya stricta extract against deadly mosquito vectors and microbial pathogens. The phytochemical profile of the R. stricta extracts was studied by HPLC-MS and 1H NMR. Further, confirmation of the bio-fabricated silver nanoparticles

Transgenic Aedes aegypti Mosquitoes Transfer Genes into a Natural Population.

In an attempt to control the mosquito-borne diseases yellow fever, dengue, chikungunya, and Zika fevers, a strain of transgenically modified Aedes aegypti mosquitoes containing a dominant lethal gene has been developed by a commercial company, Oxitec Ltd. If lethality is complete, releasing this strain should only reduce population size and not affect the genetics of the target populations. Approximately 450 thousand males of this strain were released each week for 27 months in Jacobina, Bahia, Brazil. We genotyped the release strain and the target Jacobina population before releases began for

Integrated Aedes management for the control of Aedes-borne diseases.

BACKGROUND: Diseases caused by Aedes-borne viruses, such as dengue, Zika, chikungunya, and yellow fever, are emerging and reemerging globally. The causes are multifactorial and include global trade, international travel, urbanisation, water storage practices, lack of resources for intervention, and an inadequate evidence base for the public health impact of Aedes control tools. National authorities need comprehensive evidence-based guidance on how and when to implement Aedes control measures tailored to local entomological and epidemiological conditions. METHODS AND FINDINGS: This review is o

Impact of deltamethrin-resistance in Aedes albopictus on its fitness cost and vector competence.

BACKGROUND: Aedes albopictus is one of the most invasive species in the world as well as the important vector for mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue fever, chikungunya fever and zika virus disease. Chemical control of mosquitoes is an effective method to control mosquito-borne diseases, however, the wide and improper application of insecticides for vector control has led to serious resistance problems. At present, there have been many reports on the resistance to pyrethroid insecticides in vector mosquitoes including deltamethrin to Aedes albopictus. However, the fitness cost and vector co

Microbiota diversity of Anopheles gambiae in Bankeng, southern Cameroon, and its association with Plasmodium falciparum infection.

Malaria control requires the coordination of different strategies due to the lack of an effective vaccine and the emerging resistance of parasites to drugs and of vectors to insecticides. Therefore, efficient and environmentally safe alternative control strategies are still needed. In this study, we explored the composition of microbiota of the Anopheles gambiae and its variability in the presence of natural Plasmodium infection during the wet and dry seasons, in order to determine their potential as a novel vector control-based approach to fight malaria. An entomological survey of a collectio

Threshold-dependent improvement in sex separation efficiency by NaCl pretreatment of larval-pupal mixtures in mass-reared Aedes albopictus.

BACKGROUND: The removal of female mosquitoes is a critical requirement in sterile insect technique (SIT) for mosquito control. Improving the efficiency and accuracy of sex sorting is therefore vital. Previous studies have demonstrated that treating larval-pupal mixtures with a 15% sodium chloride (NaCl) solution prior to the sex sorting process reduces female contamination in Aedes mosquitoes. However, the effects of NaCl on Aedes albopictus mosquito biology and its practical application in production facilities remain insufficiently explored and warrant further investigation. RESULTS: Exposu…
