BACKGROUND: Motion sickness is a common aeromedical problem that may occur in pilots exposed to increased gravitoinertial load in the head-to-foot direction (+Gz). Since motion sickness may affect autonomic nervous functions including cardiovascular control, it was hypothesized that it might interfere with cardiovascular responses to high +Gz, thereby decreasing G tolerance.
METHODS: G tolerance and cardiovascular responses to increased G load were studied in nine subjects in a centrifuge environment under two conditions. In the motion sickness condition, the subject was exposed to a motion s…

BACKGROUND: Women report a history of motion sickness (MS) about twice as frequently as men, but the results of experimental studies are equivocal. In the present investigation, we sought to replicate previous findings that women report a greater history of MS than men when interrogated with MS history questionnaires. We examined the hypothesis that those reporting that they are prone to MS are less likely to volunteer for MS provocative experiments than those who are MS resistant. Finally, using a subset of these participants, we exposed men and women, during two separate sessions, to visuall…

Motion sickness is common in the population, especially in children, but its physiopathology is only partially understood and the true nature of the particular susceptibility of certain subjects remains completely unknown. Some symptoms of motion sickness, like pallor and cold sweating, are of an autonomic nature and the role of the autonomic nervous system in vasovagal syncope is well known. Our aim was therefore to study the relationship between motion sickness susceptibility and vasovagal syncope susceptibility. Questionnaires about susceptibility to motion sickness and to vasovagal syncope…

Moving dots can evoke a percept of the spatial structure of a three-dimensional object in the absence of other visual cues. This phenomenon, called structure from motion (SFM), suggests that the motion flowfield represented in the dorsal stream can form the basis of object recognition performed in the ventral stream. SFM processing is likely to contribute to object perception whenever there is relative motion between the observer and the object viewed. Here we investigate the motion flowfield component of object recognition with functional magnetic resonance imaging. Our SFM stimuli encoded fa…

Susceptibility to motion sickness has been linked to aerobic fitness in several studies, however, these studies have not elucidated the underlying physiological mechanism by which increased aerobic fitness is related to a decreased ability to tolerate motion sickness stimuli. This pilot study provides further evidence of a relationship between aerobic fitness and motion sickness susceptibility. It also suggests that aerobic capacity is more specifically linked to signs and symptoms of vasomotor origin including stomach discomfort, nausea and/or vomiting, headache, and diaphoresis. By independe…

There are substantial individual differences in susceptibility to motion sickness, yet little is known about what mediates these differences. Spatial ability and sex have been suggested as possible factors in this relationship. 89 participants (57 women) were administered a Motion Sickness Questionnaire that assesses motion sickness susceptibility, a Water-level Task that gauges sensitivity to gravitational upright, and a Mental Rotation Task that tests an individual's awareness of how objects typically move in space. Significant sex differences were observed in performance of both the Water-l…

An object flashed briefly in a given location, the moment another moving object arrives in the same location, is perceived by observers as lagging behind the moving object (flash-lag effect). Does the flash-lag effect occur if the retinal image of the moving object is rendered stationary by smooth pursuit of the moving object? Does the flash-lag effect occur if the retinal image of a stationary object is caused to move by smooth-pursuit eye movements? A disk was briefly flashed in the center of a moving ring such that the ring center was completely 'filled' by the disk. In this display, observ

1. The present study tested the hypothesis that motion sickness affects thermoregulatory responses to cooling in humans. 2. Ten healthy male volunteers underwent three separate head-out immersions in 28 degrees C water after different preparatory procedures. In the 'control' procedure immersion was preceded by a rest period. In the 'motion sickness' procedure immersion was preceded by provocation of motion sickness in a human centrifuge. This comprised rapid and repeated alterations of the gravitational (G-) stress in the head-to-foot direction, plus a standardized regimen of head movements at…

The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis whereby eye movements as such may be an important factor in the development of motion sickness (MS). The horizontal eye movements of 27 subjects were measured during earth vertical axis rotation (EVAR) and during off vertical axis rotation (OVAR). Two groups were set up, one including subjects who suffered severe MS during the test, and the other including subjects with no MS symptoms. We found no differences in nystagmus parameters (EVAR: gain and time constant; OVAR: eye velocity modulation and eye position modulation) between the MS and t…

When two visual patterns moving in opposite directions are superimposed, they appear to be at different depths and to slide over each other. Because the stimulus does not specify the depth-order between the surfaces, this transparent motion perception is essentially ambiguous. With prolonged observation, the perceived depth-order of the two moving surfaces reverses spontaneously. In the present study, the correlation between the perceived direction of transparent motion and optokinetic nystagmus (OKN) was examined. While viewing superimposed random-dot patterns moving in opposite horizontal or…

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: This case report describes physical therapy for motion sickness in a 34-year-old woman. The purpose of the report is twofold: (1) to provide an overview of the literature regarding motion sickness syndrome, causal factors, and rationale for treatment and (2) to describe the evaluation and treatment of a patient with motion sickness.
CASE DESCRIPTION AND OUTCOMES: The patient initially had moderate to severe visually induced motion sickness, which affected her functional abilities and prevented her from working. Following 10 weeks of a primarily home-based program of vi…

Where do we perceive an object to be when it is moving? Nijhawan [1] has reported that if a stationary test pattern is briefly flashed in sp … imulus presentation could affect perceptual latency [2], and therefore the perceived position if in motion (as suggested for the Pulfrich pendulum effect [3] [4]). In other words, if the flashed probe of the Nijhawan demonstration takes longer to reach perceptual awareness than the moving stimulus, the latter will appear to be ahead of the probe. Here, I …

The supermarket industry has one of the highest numbers of repeated trauma illnesses. Checkout departments have a rate of musculoskeletal injuries 2 to 3 times higher than that of other supermarket departments. The primary objective of this study was to quantify the wrist motions required to bag groceries using a wrist motion monitor. The wrist motions included deviations, velocities, and accelerations for flexion-extension, radial-ulnar, and pronation-supination directions. The independent variables were handle type and object location. Objects with finger-thumb couplings required more extrem…

In this study a new method of reinnervation for unilateral recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis was performed in canines, producing physiologic vocal fold motion in each of a small series of animals. During the procedure the left anterior division of the recurrent laryngeal nerve was reinnervated with axons from the thyroarytenoid branch of the contralateral recurrent laryngeal nerve. The posterior branch of the left recurrent laryngeal nerve was divided and sutured to the ansa cervicalis to maintain tone in the posterior cricoarytenoid muscle. In all four animals, the right distal vocalis stum…

One subject with complete forebrain commissurotomy (L.B.), another with posterior callosotomy (D.K.), and eight normal controls were presented with successive pairs of red and/or green lights, on either side of the retinal midline and within the left and right visual fields. All of the subjects could discriminate the direction of apparent motion in all three locations, although L.B. was poorer on bilateral than unilateral presentations. Moreover, on bilateral presentations, L.B. was significantly poorer at identifying the color of the first light than the color of the second light. In contrast…

We present the first assessment of motion vision in childhood autism. Postural reactivity to visually perceived motion was measured in five autistic children and 12 normal controls of the same chronological age. Anteroposterior as well as total body sway occurring on a force platform in response to movements in the visual environment were compared. Autistic children were posturally more unstable than normal children and quite insensitive to visually perceived environmental motion. Some implications of this impairment for sensorimotor and social communication development in infantile autism are…

Postoperative management of the extensor tendon injury has been altered over the past 15 years from treatment with 4 to 6 weeks of immobilization to controlled passive motion and, now, to active SAM with minimal tension and wrist tenodesis programs. The concepts of immediate motion are supported biochemically in experimental studies, and biomechanically through excursion studies, mathematical analysis of tendon excursion and force application, and study of repair tensile strengths. The results cited in this article and those reported by others demonstrate that early motion for extensor tendons…

PURPOSE: The purpose of the study was to examine the effectiveness of P6 acupressure on nausea associated with visually-induced motion sickness.
METHOD: There were 64 subjects randomly divided into 4 groups: P6 acupressure, dummy-point acupressure, sham P6 acupressure, and control. Each subject sat in an optokinetic drum for a 12-min baseline and 12-min drum rotation period. Subjects' electrogastrograms (EGG's) and subjective symptoms of motion sickness were obtained.
RESULTS: The results indicated that the subjects in the P6 acupressure group reported significantly less nausea [F(3,60) = 8.…

The characteristics of linear acceleration to cause motion sickness of rats were examined using pica as a behavioral index of motion sickness. A vestibular sled was used to generate sinusoidal linear acceleration. At 0.4 Hz and with a peak acceleration of 0.15 G, the effectiveness of linear acceleration in inducing motion sickness was X-axis > Y-axis > Z-axis. At 0.4 Hz and along the X-axis, rats suffered from more severe motion sickness with a high peak G load (0.15 G) than with a low one (0.08 G). Along the X-axis and with a peak acceleration of 0.15 G, the severity of motion sickness was no…

Intramuscular promethazine and its efficacy in the treatment of Space Motion Sickness (SMS) were evaluated using standardized questions administered during postflight debriefings to crewmembers immediately after their first Shuttle flight. Space Motion Sickness was graded as none, mild, moderate, or severe, based on published criteria. Immediate symptom relief (within 1-2 h) was evaluated by subjective reports; medication efficacy was based on scores derived from the four most frequently reported symptoms of SMS: nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, and stomach awareness. Scores were given for …
