After its elimination from Mexico in 2003, myiasis caused by New World screwworm (NWS), Cochliomyia hominivorax, has recently reemerged as a public and animal health concern. We conducted a retrospective study of human New World screwworm myiasis cases reported through Mexico's national surveillance system during April 13, 2025-March 14, 2026. Of 204 cases in official surveillance summaries, 202 had sufficient information for case-level clinical and epidemiologic analysis. Cases were concentrated in southern Mexico, particularly Chiapas, followed by Yucatán, Oaxaca, and Quintana Roo. Most (71.…

We report a case of human Oestrus ovis nasal myiasis in Greece, in which pupation occurred within the human host. Ten larvae in various stages of development and 1 puparium were expelled or extracted from the patient's maxillary sinus. Diagnosis was confirmed through morphologic identification and by PCR, followed by DNA sequencing.

Myiasis is a parasitic infestation caused by the larvae of dipteran flies, affecting living or necrotic tissues in humans and animals. It is classified into obligatory and facultative forms, depending on the relationship between the parasite and the host. Clinically, myiasis may present as cutaneous, wound, cavity, intestinal, urogenital, or blood-feeding larval infestations. Diagnosis is based on the characteristic clinical presentation, with definitive identification provided by a parasitological examination of the larvae. Treatment involves the mechanical removal of the larvae and appropria…

BACKGROUND: Myiasis refers to the infestation of live human with 2-winged larvae (maggots). Cutaneous myiasis is the most commonly encountered clinical form. It is divided into 3 main forms: furuncular, creeping (migratory), and wound (traumatic) myiasis.
CASE REPORT: In this article, we report an extremely rare case of myiasis around percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) tube in a 71-year-old female patient. She had the tube placed for feeding purposes, 8 months prior to her presentation. Family noticed alive worms emerging from skin at the gastrostomy tube insertion site. Patient was tr…

Cephenemyia stimulator larvae cause a specific myiasis in roe deer, which is widely distributed in Europe. In Spain, this parasite was detected by the first time in 2005, coinciding with a high mortality of this ruminant especially in northwest of the country. The aim of this study was to analyse the results obtained by necropsy and ELISA to elucidate when the first infestation by C. stimulator in roe deer from northwestern Spain occurred, as well as to determine the influence of some intrinsic factors on the prevalence and intensity of infestation. During 1994-2000, none seropositive roe deer…

Myiasis is caused by dipterous larvae from the Calliphoridae, Sarcophagidae, Muscidae, Cuterebridae, and Syrphidae families. In this work, Cochliomyia hominivorax, Chrysomya megacephala, and Ornidia robusta were identified causing vulva, ear, and leg myiasis in pigs in Tucuman province, northwestern Argentina. The report of the presence of C. hominivorax and C. megacephala is very important due to their role as myiasis-causing and disease vectors. The occurrence of Ornidia robusta is remarkable, since it constitutes the first record of myiasis in general and of myiasis in pigs in particular. L…

The sheep nasal botfly Oestrus ovis is the commonest of several species of dipteran fly whose larvae are obligatory parasites in the nasal cavities and frontal sinuses of sheep but may cause infestation (myiasis) in man, commonly as external infestations and rarely, involves inner coat of the eye (Ocular myiasis interna). We report an imported case of Bilateral Ocular myiasis interna in an Indian boy.

Myiasis is a disease caused by fly larvae and aural myiasis is a rare clinic condition often occuring in children or mentally retarded people. We report the case of an unusual presentation of a bilateral aural myiasis in a mentally retarded patient with bilateral chronic otitis media caused by the third instar larvae of Wohlfahrtia magnifica. Two larvae were located on the other ear canal while two additional larvae were located in the middle ear cavity and were removed through perforation of the tympanic membrane. Treatment of aural myiasis is based on removal of the maggots and cleansing of …

A study was conducted to determine the prevalence, larval burden, and associated gross pathological lesions of Oestrus ovis in sheep and goats slaughtered at Luna export abattoir in Central Oromia from November 2007 to March 2008. For this purpose, a total of heads of 431 goats and 369 sheep were thoroughly examined for the presence of first (L1), second (L2), and third (L3) larval stages according to standard procedures. O. ovis larvae were detected in 349(94.6%) sheep and 381(88.4%) goats. All three larval instars were observed in each study months. Statistically significant variation (chi (

"Myiasis-causing flies" is a generic term that includes species from numerous dipteran families, mainly Calliphoridae and Oestridae, of which blowflies, screwworm flies and botflies are among the most important. This group of flies is characterized by the ability of their larvae to develop in animal flesh. When the host is a live vertebrate, such parasitism by dipterous larvae is known as primary myiasis. Myiasis-causing flies can be classified as saprophagous (free-living species), facultative or obligate parasites. Many of these flies are of great medical and veterinary importance in Brazil …

Larvae of Rhinoestrus purpureus (Brauer) and Rhinoestrus usbekistanicus Gan (Diptera: Oestridae) cause nasal myiases of equids. During a recent epidemiological survey in southern Italy some morphological and taxonomical doubts arose concerning the identification of Rhinoestrus third stage larvae on the basis of the features of the posterior spiracles and the distribution of dorsal spines on the third segment. Four different morphotypes were retrieved: R. usbekistanicus-like, R. purpureus-like and two morphotypes with shared features. The genes encoding for the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase
