Emodin suppresses the nasopharyngeal carcinoma cells by targeting the chloride channels.

Emodin is a natural anthraquinone derivative isolated from the Rheum palmatum. Recent studies demonstrated that emodin has anti-cancer activity in different kinds of human cancer cell lines. However, the underlying mechanism has not been very well studied. Our previous studies showed chloride channels is an important target of anti-cancer drugs. Therefore, the purpose of this research was aimed to explore the role of chloride channels involving in the anti-cancer activity of emodin. The proliferation, cell cycle arrest and apoptosis of poorly differentiated human nasopharyngeal carcinoma cells

miR-206 enhances nasopharyngeal carcinoma radiosensitivity by targeting IGF1.

Radioresistance remains a major problem in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) treatment. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms of NPC radioresistance remain poorly understood. The present study aimed to investigate the potential role and mechanism of miR-206 in NPC radioresistance. We observed that miR-206 was down-regulated in radioresistant NPC cells. Furthermore, restoration of miR-206 in CNE2-IR cells suppressed enhanced radiosensitivity of NPC cells. In contrast, inhibition of miR-206 in CNE2 cells reduced the radiosensitivity. We also found that miR-206 directly targeted IGF1 and inhi

Virulence patterns of Staphylococcus aureus strains from nasopharyngeal colonization.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of nasopharyngeal colonization with Staphylococcus aureus can reach 20-30% among the population, which can lead to invasive infection. AIM: To investigate the prevalence of colonization among different age groups, and analyse S. aureus strain-specific virulence patterns. METHOD: For analysis of the prevalence of colonization, groups consisting of newborns, healthy volunteers aged 5-60 years, and nursing home residents aged >80 years were examined with nasopharyngeal swabs. After S. aureus was cultured, genetic analysis and phenotypic virulence testing were performe

Nasopharyngeal angiofibroma in an adult with Proteus syndrome. First reported case.

BACKGROUND: Proteus Syndrome (PS) is a rare hamartoneoplastic disorder consisting of a disproportionate and asymmetric overgrowth of body parts, leading to severe body and face disfigurement. Individuals with PS frequently need to undergo a number of surgical procedures including Otolaryngology interventions. Their peculiar anatomy turns even the most straightforward intervention to a challenging one. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 31-year-old adult male with PS presented with recurrent epistaxis and nasal obstruction. A nasal mass was found during the physical examination, which was surgically removed

Dynamics of nasopharyngeal pneumococcal carriage during the course of viral bronchiolitis.

The effect of viral infection on nasopharyngeal carriage of Streptococcus pneumoniae during childhood is not well known. We studied dynamics of pneumococcal colonization by quantitative PCR during the natural course of viral bronchiolitis. At time of admission, 47 (47%) of 100 patients with bronchiolitis carried pneumococci. In patients with viral bronchiolitis who did not receive antibiotics, pneumococcal load decreased from time of admission to discharge (n = 35, cycle threshold 23 vs. 25, P = 0.0017) and from discharge to follow-up (n = 22, cycle threshold 25 vs. 40, P = 0.003). We conclude

Pulmonary air leak syndrome associated with traumatic nasopharyngeal suctioning.

We describe a healthy 7-month-old female infant who developed spontaneous pneumomediastinum (PM) and subcutaneous emphysema after traumatic nasopharyngeal suctioning (NPS) while hospitalised for respiratory syncytial virus bronchiolitis. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case of pulmonary air leak syndrome associated with traumatic NPS in a healthy infant affected by bronchiolitis. Although NPS is currently the mainstay of treatment in patients admitted with bronchiolitis in the USA, currently there are minimal data regarding the safety and effectiveness of the procedure

Matrine inhibits the migratory and invasive properties of nasopharyngeal carcinoma cells.

Matrine is a widely used Chinese herbal medicine that has historically been used in the treatment of inflammation and cancer. However, the antimetastatic effects and associated molecular mechanisms of matrine on nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) remain to be elucidated. Therefore, the aims of the present study were to assess the antimetastatic effects of matrine on NPC, and identify the underlying mechanisms. Matrine inhibited the proliferation of NPC cells in vitro and in vivo. Furthermore, matrine inhibited the migration and invasion of NPC tumor cells at doses below the toxic range. Following

Transcriptome meta-analysis reveals dysregulated pathways in nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a malignant cancer arising from the epithelial surface of the nasopharynx that mostly appears in advanced stages of the disease, leading to a poor prognosis. To date, a number of mRNA profiling investigations on NPC have been reported in order to identify suitable biomarkers for early detection. However, the results may be specific to each study with distinct sample types. In this study, an integrative meta-analysis of NPC transcriptome data was performed to determine dysregulated pathways, potentially leading to identification of molecular markers. Ten indepe

The nasopharyngeal microbiota of feedlot cattle that develop bovine respiratory disease.

Bovine respiratory disease is the major cause of morbidity and mortality in feedlot cattle. The objective of this study was to compare the nasopharyngeal bacterial microbiota of healthy cattle and cattle treated for BRD in a commercial feedlot setting using a high-density 16S rRNA gene microarray (Phylochip). Samples were taken from both groups of animals (n=5) at feedlot entry (day 0) and ≥60 days after placement. Cattle diagnosed with BRD had significantly less bacterial diversity and fewer OTUs in their nasopharynx at both sampling times. The predominant phyla in both groups were Proteobact

A multifunctional peptide for targeted imaging and chemotherapy for nasopharyngeal and breast cancers.

UNLABELLED: The L-peptide plays a role as a universal ligand binding specifically to nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) and other cancers but not normal cells. It was used to link iron oxide nanoparticles, and injected intravenously to SCID mice bearing NPC and breast cancer xenografts for MR analysis, and showed significant change of MR signal intensity in the xenograft regions. Using this conjugate as a ligand to localize the L-peptide targeted protein in the cancer surgical specimens, a clear reaction product was identified in the tumor cells of both cancer types. If the L-peptide-linked-liposo

Inhibitory effects of 3-bromopyruvate in human nasopharyngeal carcinoma cells.

Tumor cells depend on aerobic glycolysis for adenosine triphosphate (ATP) production, which is therefore targeted by therapeutic agents. The compound 3-bromopyruvate (3-BrPA), a strong alkylating agent and hexokinase inhibitor, inhibits tumor cell glycolysis and the production of ATP, causing apoptosis. 3-BrPA induces apoptosis of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) cell lines HNE1 and CNE-2Z, which may be related to its molecular mechanisms. In the present study, we investigated the effects of 3-BrPA on the viability, reactive oxygen species (ROS), apoptosis and other types of programmed cell deat

[Genetic polymorphism of cytochrome P450 2E1 and the risk of nasopharyngeal carcinoma].

Cytochrome P450 2E1 (CYP2E1) is a detoxifying enzyme that belongs to the phase I metabolism of xenobiotics. This enzyme is encoded by a highly polymorphic gene whose common polymorphism corresponds to the substitution of cytosine (C) and thymine (T) at position -1019 (rs2031920). This polymorphism has been identified in several cancers including nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC). The study involved 124 patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma, compared with 166 healthy controls. The presence or absence of the polymorphism is determined by PCR-RFLP. The frequency comparison between the two groups is de

Juvenile Nasopharyngeal Angiofibroma Extending into the Oral Cavity: A Rare Entity.

Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma (JNA) is a rare vascular tumour which is benign but locally aggressive and occurs invariably in young and adolescent males. It seldom involves the oral cavity but has the tendency to invade the adjacent structures. Its characteristic features include slow progression, aggressive growth & an increased rate of persistence and recurrence due to its location in inaccessible areas. In literature, very few cases of JNA have been reported with extension into the oral cavity. Here, a case of JNA with extension into the oral cavity has been discussed who reported to

Atlantoaxial subluxation and nasopharyngeal necrosis complicating suspected granulomatosis with polyangiitis.

Granulomatosis polyangiitis (GPA, formerly Wegener granulomatosis) is a vasculitis that typically involves the upper respiratory tract, lungs, and kidneys. The 2 established methods to confirm a suspicion of GPA are the antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA) test and biopsy. However, ANCA-negative cases have been known to occur, and it can be difficult to find biopsy evidence of granulomatous disease. We report a case of suspected granulomatosis with polyangiitis limited to the nasopharynx. With a negative ANCA and no histological evidence, our diagnosis was founded on the exclusion of othe
