A tailored, supportive care intervention using systematic assessment designed for people with inoperable lung cancer: a randomised controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: People with inoperable lung cancer experience higher levels of distress, more unmet needs and symptoms than other cancer patients. There is an urgent need to test innovative approaches to improve psychosocial and symptom outcomes in this group. This study tested the hypothesis that a tailored, multidisciplinary supportive care programme based on systematic needs assessment would reduce perceived unmet needs and distress and improve quality of life. METHODS: A randomised controlled trial design was used. The tailored intervention comprised two sessions at treatment commencement and …

Unseen and unheard: needs of older spousal caregivers in Alzheimer's care without national support programs.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Older spousal caregivers are a significant part of the family caregivers of individuals with Alzheimer's Disease (AD) and, due to their unique situation, have their own specific support needs. However, little is known about their needs, particularly in countries without integrated formal support systems, such as Iran. Identifying the actual support needs of these caregivers leads to the design of effective interventions. This study aimed to explore and conceptualize the support needs of older spousal caregivers of people with AD. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: This qu

Reasons for long-term care need: analyzing combinations of health limitations in Germany.

BACKGROUND: Health limitations affect long-term care (LTC) needs differently. For instance, people with cognitive limitations require more organizational support, whereas those with functional limitations require more personal care. While the impact of singular health limitations on LTC has been widely studied, little attention has been given to the prevalences of co-occurring health limitations that drive LTC needs. OBJECTIVES: Our exploratory study seeks to address the gap in understanding the prevalence of multiple, intertwining health limitations that contribute to the need for LTC. MATE

Impact of disease recurrence on the supportive care needs of patients with ovarian cancer and their caregivers.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to explore the supportive care needs of ovarian cancer patients and their caregivers before and after the first cancer recurrence, the top unmet needs after recurrence, and the relationship between patient and caregiver needs at recurrence. METHODS: Participants were 288 patients and 140 caregivers from the Australian Ovarian Cancer Study-Quality of Life (AOCS-QoL) cohort. They completed Supportive Care Needs Surveys (patients: SCNS-SF34, caregivers: SCNS-P&C44) every three-to-six months for up to two years. Linear mixed models tracked changes in needs over time. Analysis of the unmet needs of Palestinian advanced cancer patients and their relationship to emotional distress: results from a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Although several studies assessing the needs of advanced cancer patients have been conducted globally, most have focused on a specific type of cancer such as lung or breast cancer. The variation across studies has also created difficulties in generalizing the results and applying the findings in other countries. The aim of this study was to provide comprehensive information on the needs of Palestinian advanced cancer patients. The quality of life (QOL), distress levels, depression, anxiety, and spiritual well-being of the patients were also assessed. METHODS: A hospital-based stud

Exploring the concept of need in people with very severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Despite apparent unmet needs, people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) rarely ask for help. We explored the concept of need from the perspective of patients, their family carers and professionals. METHODS: We recruited inpatients at two National Health Service (NHS) Lothian hospitals to a structured, holistic review of care needs delivered at home by a respiratory nurse 4 weeks postdischarge. Using semistructured interviews and group discussions, review notes and field-notes we explored the views of patients, carers and professionals on perceptions of need and the

Unmet needs and associated factors among patients with melanoma: a mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: The burden of melanoma in China is increasing, but the supportive care needs of Chinese patients remain understudied. The applicability of Western findings may be limited by clinical and sociocultural differences. This study aimed to characterize unmet needs among Chinese patients with melanoma and identify associated factors using a mixed-methods approach. METHODS: A convergent parallel mixed-methods study was conducted. Quantitatively, 105 patients completed the Needs Evaluation Questionnaire, and multivariable binary logistic regression was performed to identify associated fact

Unmet needs of heart failure patients across the different domains of palliative care - a qualitative interview study.

A Health Navigator intervention to identify and respond to the health-related social needs of an Australian population living with cancer: a mixed-methods feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: People living with cancer often require intensive support throughout their cancer journey. While cancer coordination services provide support accessing cancer care and understanding treatment options, many patients experience considerable health-related social needs (e.g. unemployment, financial insecurity) that impact their health and wellbeing. Health Navigator interventions address patients' health-related social needs through ongoing support to access relevant support organisations in the community. This study assessed the feasibility and acceptability of a Health Navigator int

ECG changes in octogenarians.

Numerous studies have been done about the Electrocardiogram (ECG) in the elderly but just a few regarding the changes in ECG in octogenarians. Ageing is definitely associated with changes in the cardiac conduction and physiology. This study attempts to evaluate the ECG in octogenarians. ECG recordings from 165 octogenarian subjects were obtained from subjects aged 80-89 years, mean age was 82.75 +/- 2.41 years. ECG's were normal in 27.27 % of the study population. The major abnormalities noted were right bundle branch block 15.15%, left ventricular hypertrophy in 13.93%, Poor R-wave progressio
