We describe a giant basal cell carcinoma, measuring 40 cm x 20 cm, of the lower abdominal, genital and bilateral inguinal regions. The rectus abdominis muscle and the adductor magnus muscle were exposed centrally, and the penis and scrotum were completely destroyed. Reconstruction was performed with a fillet thigh flap, and an excellent result was obtained 1 year after surgery.

BACKGROUND: Cryosurgery is an established method to treat malignant tumors of the eyelids and periorbital area. Nevertheless, it has been abandoned for tumors greater than 10 mm, because it gives irregular esthetic results and, in some cases, lagophthalmos.
OBJECTIVE: To devise a new method for the treatment of such tumors.
METHOD: Fractional cryosurgery is performed in stages: the center of the lesion is frozen, resulting in a reduction of the tumor; this procedure is repeated, as necessary, until the lesion's diameter is smaller than 10 mm; the standard cryosurgical procedure is then carri

Eccrine carcinomas are locally aggressive and have an infiltrative growth pattern. They have a variable clinical appearance and a diversity of histologic findings that often make the diagnosis difficult. The histologic findings, together with immunoperoxidase and enzyme histochemical studies, usually allow differentiation between eccrine carcinomas, other cutaneous neoplasms, and visceral adenocarcinomas with skin metastases. Provided there is no evidence of distant metastases, surgical excision is the treatment of choice. We report a case of syringoid eccrine carcinoma that was treated with M

We report three cases of clinically unapparent syringoma found incidentally on horizontal frozen tissue sections from patients undergoing Mohs micrographic excision of basal cell carcinoma (BCC). In the first case, the syringoma and BCC were admixed; in the other two cases, they were seen in close approximation to one another. In all cases, the tumors were detected on the faces of elderly women. The potential existence of a benign syringoma in association with BCC should be borne in mind, particularly in connection with Mohs micrographic excision. These tumors must be distinguished from one an

Perineural invasion by basal cell carcinoma is rare and has been reported only in cases of extensive recurrent carcinoma. A patient with facial pain and progressive fifth cranial nerve symptoms was found to have perineural invasion by basal cell carcinoma in the absence of recurrent disease.

We report the case of a caucasian woman who, between the ages of 49 and 51 years, developed multiple (> 20) basal cell carcinomas (BCC). There was no family history of BCC. No abnormalities in the human homologue of the Drosophila segment polarity gene patched (PTCH), glutathione S-transferases T1 and M1, or cytochrome P450 1A1 were detected by polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based molecular analysis. There was, however, actinic damage of the skin in sun-exposed areas. The patient was diagnosed as having hairy cell leukaemia (HCL) at the age of 51 years, based upon leucocyte morphology as asse

Adamantinoma-like Ewing sarcoma (ALES) is a rare tumor that demonstrates the EWSR1-FLI1 translocation characteristic of Ewing sarcoma despite overt epithelial differentiation including diffuse expression of cytokeratins and p40. Most cases of ALES described to date have occurred in the head and neck where they can mimic a wide range of small round blue cell tumors. Because distinguishing ALES from basaloid salivary gland carcinomas can be particularly difficult, we analyzed a series of 10 ALESs that occurred in the salivary glands with the aim of identifying features that allow for better reco

The Wilms' tumour gene (WT1) has previously been described as an oncogene in several neoplasms of humans, including melanoma, and its expression increases cancer cell proliferation. Recent reports associate the expression of the PPARβ/δ gene (peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor beta/delta) with the downregulation of WT1 in human melanoma and murine melanoma cell lines. The aim of this work was to analyse the expression of WT1 and its association with PPARβ/δ in samples of healthy and melanoma-affected skin of horses by immunohistochemistry. WT1 protein expression was detected in healthy

Metastatic spread to the heart from neoplasms is very rare, often silent and rarely gains clinical attention. Usually, it correlates with widespread metastatic disease and is suggestive of a poor prognosis. Most cardiac metastases (CM) are detected following post-mortem studies with only a handful reported antemortemly. Here, we report a case of an asymptomatic cardiac metastasis from esophageal carcinoma and a review of the literature. In late July 2014, a 73-year-old woman diagnosed with locally advanced esophageal squamous cell carcinoma was admitted to our institution. Cardiothoracic metas

Mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS) is a condition characterized by recurrent episodes of clinically relevant, systemic, severe reactions to mast cell (MC)-derived mediators released in the context of anaphylaxis or another acute MC-related event. It is important to document MC involvement in these reactions in order to establish the diagnosis MCAS. The most specific and reliable marker of systemic MC activation is an acute and substantial event-related (transient) increase in the serum tryptase level over the individual's baseline value. However, the baseline level of tryptase varies dependi

Besides the inherited forms of mottled and reticulate pigmentation, a vast number of diseases and trigger mechanisms can lead to acquired pigmentation of the neck. Nonhereditary variants of reticulate and mottled pigmentation can affect the neck as a typical site and therefore may give a diagnostic clue or it can occur sporadically on the neck as well as on other sites. A well-known and important factor in the pathogenesis is exposure to sunlight. Sun-induced pigmentation often presents on the neck and may result from phototoxic, photoallergic and cumulative actinic damage. Frequent forms comp

The histologic boundary between actinic keratosis, Bowen disease, and invasive squamous cell carcinoma is not clear in many cases. We determined nuclear expression of p27 (a protein associated with cellular quiescence) and Ki-67 (a marker of proliferation) immunohistochemically in actinic keratosis, Bowen disease, and squamous cell carcinoma to see if differential patterns of expression for p27 exist and how these might correlate with Ki-67 expression. We determined a labeling index for p27-stained nuclei and assessed the pattern of Ki-67 expression. The student's t test was used to evaluate t

We describe a case of malignant proliferating trichilemmal tumor showing multiple distant metastases. For 10 years, the patient had had a round mass in the occiput, which recurred twice after wide excisions, and later metastasized to the cervical lymph nodes, periparotid area, and chest. Each time the lesions were excised, histologic specimens demonstrated a proliferating trichilemmal tumor with increasing nuclear atypia. Serial specimens showed increasing Ki-67 positivity as the extent of the tumor advanced.

INTRODUCTION: Although numerous syndromic and non-syndromic odontogenic lesions of the jaws have been documented in the literature, there are very few cases of simultaneous benign and malignant jaw lesions.
PATIENT CONCERNS: We present a case of right maxillary squamous cell carcinoma along with several benign odontogenic cystic lesions of the jaws and skeletal abnormalities that meet the criteria for Gorlin-Goltz syndrome.
TAKEAWAY LESSONS: With a review of the literature, the specifics of management and follow-up are discussed.

The fifth edition of the World Health Organization (WHO) classification of urinary and male genital organ tumors has been recently published in 2022. The application of molecular profiling has made a substantial impact on the classification of urologic tumors. The new WHO classification introduces a group of molecularly well-defined renal tumor subtypes. The significant changes include addition of a category of "other oncocytic tumors" with oncocytoma/chromophobe renal cell carcinoma (chRCC)-like features, elimination of the subcategorization of type 1/2 papillary RCC, and inclusion of eosinop

Incidence rate of skin tumours, both, non-melanoma and melanoma, is increasing nowadays. Various etiological factors are of relevance for the occurrence of the diseases. The solar radiation, as well, long-term exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, have the greatest impact on development of these skin tumours. Non-melanoma skin tumours, Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC) and Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC), are the most common skin tumours in humans, and usually develop on the chronically photo-exposed areas. As for the Malignant Melanoma (MM), one of the most aggressive skin tumours, the exposure to s
