OBJECTIVE: Giant cell tumor of the bone (GCTB) is a locally aggressive benign tumor with unpredictable recurrence patterns. While intraos seous recurrences are well-documented, soft tissue recurrence (STR) remains underrecognized. This study aimed to identify risk factors, radiographic features, and histopathological characteristics associated with STR of GCTB.

The clinical behavior of giant cell tumors (GCTs) is unpredictable. To gain insight into this tumor's biological behavior, matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMPs) were studied. These substances play essential roles in wound healing and neoplastic invasion and metastasis. Paraffin-embedded tissue was collected from 18 cases of histologically benign GCT, with 17 treated by curettage and 1 by resection. Interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) has been shown to enhance anti-tumor immunity and inhibit the formation of bone-resorbing osteoclasts. Between January 1980 and March 1993, 166 patients with renal cell carcinoma were treated at Nagoya University Hospital. Aminoglutethimide (AG) with Dexamethasone has been utilized in 26 patients with metastatic breast cancer who had prior response to hormonal manipulation and/or positive estrogen receptor. Over the past 20 years the Orthopaedic Oncology Unit of the Massachusetts General Hospital has performed over 660 massive cadaveric allograft transplantations, mostly for patients with bone tumors. The overall success rate for such procedures is around 80%, with most of the failures occurring in the first 3 years as a result of fracture (19%), nonunion (14%), and infection (10%). Computed tomography (CT) has dramatically changed the imaging of pediatric oncologic disease. CT precisely displays and characterizes cross-sectional anatomic pathology. This provides important information for diagnosing and staging tumors in infants and children. The principles, techniques, and indications for computed tomography in the evaluation of pediatric extracranial tumors are reviewed in this article. Selected applications of computed tomography for pediatric tumors of the mediastinum, chest wall, lung parenchyma, abdomen, pelvis, and extremities are discussed and illustrated.
