PRAME Expression in HPV-associated and Differentiated Vulvar Intraepithelial Neoplasia-associated Vulvar Squamous Neoplasia.

Preferentially expressed antigen in melanoma (PRAME) immunohistochemistry was initially used diagnostically in melanoma but is increasingly evaluated across malignancies for diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic purposes. PRAME protein acts as a dominant repressor of retinoic acid signaling and may help stratify patients for retinoic acid-based therapy. Multiple PRAME-targeted immunotherapy trials are ongoing, supported by its selective tumor expression. Vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia (VIN) is an appealing setting for PRAME assessment because lesions are often multifocal or extensive, and

Adenomatous eccrine metaplasia--a novel reaction pattern.

We recently observed atypical adenomatous metaplasia of eccrine glands in an excisional biopsy of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). This led us to this study in an effort to ascertain whether this reaction pattern is common to all excisional biopsies and, depending on its presence in association with residual tumor, whether it is lineage specific. We performed a retrospective review of 201 excisional biopsies and noted that adenomatous metaplasia was present in 35 of 201 (17%) of the cases, of which 19 had residual tumor. Adenomatous metaplasia seemed to be more frequent in epithelial neoplasms s

Simple Nephrectomy for Non-Functioning Kidney: An Institutional Experience with Non-Neoplastic and Incidentally Detected Neoplastic Lesions.

Introduction. Chronic kidney diseases are attributed to a variety of etiologies, including diabetes mellitus, hypertension, vascular diseases, cystic kidney diseases, chronic tubulo-interstitial diseases, chronic pyelonephritis, and glomerular diseases. Simple nephrectomy is indicated when the loss of renal function in a unilateral non-functional kidney is permanent in a persistently symptomatic patient. Uncommonly, a non-functional kidney may develop neoplasm unsuspected pre-operatively and be diagnosed only during histopathological examination of nephrectomy specimen. Material and methods. W

Clinicopathological Spectrum and Survival in Esophageal Neuroendocrine Carcinoma and Mixed Neuroendocrine-Non-Neuroendocrine Neoplasms: A 74-Patient Cohort.

BACKGROUND: Primary esophageal neuroendocrine carcinoma (NEC) and mixed neuroendocrine-non-neuroendocrine neoplasms (MiNENs) are rare malignancies with a poor prognosis. Data on clinicopathological features and survival outcomes in Central China are still limited. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 74 patients with pathologically confirmed untreated primary esophageal NEC/MiNEN between January 2014 and June 2024. Neuroendocrine and non-neuroendocrine components were evaluated using immunohistochemical staining. The primary outcome was overall survival (OS), which was analyzed using the Kapl

Synchronous verrucous carcinoma and inverted papilloma of the lacrimal sac: case report and clinical update.

Inverted papilloma is a benign epithelial tumor of the nasal cavity. It is known to coexist with malignancy in 5 to 13% of cases, with squamous cell carcinoma being the most common malignancy. Another associated malignancy, one that is extremely rare, is verrucous carcinoma. To the best of our knowledge, no case of verrucous carcinoma occurring alone or in association with another neoplasm has been described in the nasolacrimal system. We report a case of synchronous verrucous carcinoma and inverted papilloma of the lacrimal sac in a 47-year-old man. The patient presented with epiphora, nasal

Sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma, nasopharyngeal-type undifferentiated carcinoma, and keratinizing and nonkeratinizing squamous cell carcinoma express different cytokeratin patterns.

Sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma (SNUC) is a highly aggressive malignant neoplasm that is often difficult to distinguish from other poorly differentiated carcinomas arising in the sinonasal tract. To search for a differential cytokeratin (CK) expression that could be useful for diagnostic purposes, we compared the expression of a large panel of CKs in a series of 6 SNUCs, 10 poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs), 10 nonkeratinizing squamous cell carcinomas (NKSCCs), and 5 nasopharyngeal-type undifferentiated carcinomas (NPTCs). SCC, NKSCC, and NPTC frequently showed immunor

Diagnostic problems in precancerous lesions and invasive carcinomas of the penis.

Penile precancerous and invasive lesions exhibit a variegated morphology. Although the diagnosis and classification of penile tumors is straightforward in most cases, a few entities are problematic, especially to pathologists from countries in which penile cancer is rarely encountered. The differential diagnosis of squamous hyperplasias from differentiated penile intraepithelial neoplasia or from extremely low-grade invasive neoplasms (eg, pseudohyperplastic and verrucous carcinomas) may be particularly difficult. Similarly, given the morphologic features shared by all verruciform tumors (ie,

Cancer and oral lichen planus in a Swedish population.

Oral lichen planus (OLP) is generally regarded as a premalignant condition. The objective of the present study was to assess the number of oral malignant tumours in a retrospective analysis of 1028 patients (mean age=55 years; range=18-86; female, n=667; men, n=351) who between 1978 to end of 1993 were diagnosed with OLP at the Faculty of Odontology, Göteborg University, Sweden. Patients with malignant tumours were identified through the Swedish Cancer Registry at the National Board of Health and Welfare, which annually reports the incidence of malignant neoplasms in the Swedish population. Syncope due to tracheal adenoid cystic carcinoma.

We present a case of a 34-year-old male who presented with syncope secondary to a large adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of the distal trachea. A computed tomography and flexible bronchoscopy showed almost complete occlusion of the distal trachea. Resection with curative intent was performed, but resection margins were unfortunately not clear. The patient was subsequently offered adjuvant radiotherapy. Tracheal tumours comprise a small proportion of respiratory tract neoplasm, accounting for only about 2% of airway malignancies. Squamous cell carcinoma is the most common tracheal tumour, followe

Burkitt Lymphoma in Adult With Atypical Clinical Presentation Primarily Involving the Oral Soft Tissue.

Non-Hodgkin lymphoma is the second most common neoplasm of the head and neck after squamous cell carcinoma. However, it accounts for only 3.5% of all malignancies of the oral cavity. Oral lesions are often a component of disseminated disease process that may involve regional lymph nodes or may at times represent the primary extra nodal form of the disease. Although, isolated oral lymphoma in adults is extremely rare, this paper presents a patient with Burkitt lymphoma in an adult male with atypical clinical presentation primarily involving the oral soft tissue. It is believed that the prognosi

[Thyroid's metastasis of tonsillar squamous cell carcinoma].

The authors describe the case of a 58 years old man, affected by squamous cell carcinoma of the tonsil, who underwent left tonsillectomy with bilateral neck dissection, followed by radiotherapy. After a 6 months period, the patient began to suffer from dysphonia, dysphagia and loss of weight: a painless neoformation was detected at the right lobe of the tyhroid, resulted a metastasis of the tonsillar neoplasm. The search for intranodular thyroglobulin was negative; the patient underwent thyroidectomy which showed a massive infiltration of the right cricothyroid space, cricoid and thyroid wing

Primary malignant mixed Müllerian tumor of the vagina.

A 74-year-old woman presented with postmenopausal bleeding. Examination showed a 5.5-cm ulcerated, partly necrotic vaginal polyp arising anteriorly near the hymenal ring. Histology showed a malignant mixed Müllerian tumor (MMMT) with squamous and glandular epithelial and undifferentiated spindle cell stromal components, cytological atypia, and frequent mitoses. The tumor was closely associated with overlying vaginal intraepithelial neoplasia, grade III, from which it appeared to be arising. The patient was treated by surgical excision, followed by radiotherapy. Six months later, she developed

[Primary carcinoid of the larynx. Apropos of a case. Review of the literature].

We report a new case of primary atypical carcinoid of the larynx. This rare neuro-endocrine neoplasm of the larynx was initially mis diagnosed in 50% of the cases published. Since, characteristically these are lesions of the epilarynx causing dysphonia at early stages of development, the diagnosis should be kept in mind when the work-up for dysphonia reveals a small tumor of the epiglottis or aryepiglottic folds. The histological diagnosis should be oriented by Grimelius staining and confirmed immunoperoxidase marker studies for chromogranin and cytokeratin. Although, atypical carcinoids of th

Khat chewing and its association with oral/esophageal squamous cell carcinoma and oral white lesions: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVES: To systematically evaluate the association of khat (Catha edulis) chewing with the risk of oral and esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and oral white lesions in epidemiological studies. STUDY DESIGN: Systematic review and random-effects meta-analysis. METHODS: We searched PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science, and Google Scholar for studies published between 2000 and 2025. We included eligible epidemiological studies assessing khat chewing in relation to oral or esophageal SCC and oral white lesions. Methodological quality was critically appraised, and pooled odds ratios (ORs) wit

Enigma of Acantholytic and Clear Cell Changes in Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

Only limited cases have been reported about the clear cell variant of squamous cell carcinoma occurring in the oral cavity. The present study regards the case showing the histopathological features of both the clear cell and acantholytic variants of oral squamous cell carcinoma. A review of the literature has been done to understand the pathogenesis of those changes. Also, a hypothesis has been given that the clear cell changes could be the consequences of the cascades of the acantholytic process and not a separate entity. Therefore, more research is required to confirm this hypothesis and und

Effect of radiotherapy on head and neck cancer tissues in patients receiving radiotherapy: a bioinformatics analysis-based study.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Radiotherapy is pivotal in treating head and neck cancers including nasopharyngeal, tongue, hypopharyngeal, larynx, maxillary sinus, parotid gland, and oral cancers. It holds the potential for curative effects and finds application in conjunction with chemotherapy, either as a radical method to preserve organ function or as an adjuvant postoperative treatment. We used bioinformatics analysis to investigate the effects of radiotherapy on head and neck cancer tissues in patients who had received radiotherapy. In this study, the expression and mutation profiles of The Cancer Genome Atlas-Head-Nec

Costs of oropharyngeal squamous cell cancer treatment in Finland.

BACKGROUND: Oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) can be treated with definitive (chemo)radiotherapy ((C)RT) or primary surgical treatment (PST) with or without postoperative oncologic treatment. The prognosis of OPSCC does not essentially depend on the treatment modality, which allows to consider secondary decision-making aspects such as treatment costs when recommending an individual treatment modality. We attempted to analyze the costs associated with definitive (C)RT and PST in the treatment of OPSCC in Finland. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We included 73 patients diagnosed with OPSCC a

Usefulness of Five-Parameter System Reconfirmed for Cytopathology of Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma regardless of Differentiation Degree.

BACKGROUND: We previously introduced the Five-Parameter System (FPS), which exclusively evaluates keratinized cellular findings, for use in cytology examinations of oral well-differentiated squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and carcinoma in situ (CIS) specimens, as they occasionally lack nuclear atypia and can be challenging for categorization by The Bethesda System (TBS). This study was conducted to determine whether FPS parameters are detectable even in oral SCC/CIS specimens with apparent nuclear atypia. SUMMARY: Oral cytology specimens were obtained together with biopsy tissue samples. They w

Distinct Outcomes of Oropharyngeal Squamous Cell Carcinoma Patients after Distant Failure According to p16 Status: Implication in Therapeutic Options.

INTRODUCTION: Recent modifications in the epidemiology of oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) have led to the increase of Human papillomavirus (HPV) related metastatic head and neck cancer patients with high life expectancy even at advanced stage, low comorbidity and still restricted systemic therapy opportunities. In the recent era of ablative therapies' development, oligometastatic HPV OSCC patients are indubitably good candidates for intensified treatment. However, data related to outcomes after optimised management of metastatic sites are dramatically missing. MATERIALS AND PATIE
