The added value of post-mortem MRI in forensic imaging: an observational study in the Netherlands.

OBJECTIVES: In the Netherlands, post-mortem radiology aids forensic investigation, using a full-body post-mortem computed tomography (PMCT) scan and a post-mortem magnetic resonance imaging (PMMRI) scan in specific cases. Application of PMMRI varies between countries and institutions in the absence of international guidelines. This study analyses current use and added value of PMMRI in a single forensic imaging institution in the Netherlands. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All post-mortem cases scanned between July 2024 and July 2025 were included, except non-accidental injury protocol cases. The (co…

Restoration of the shallow lake Kralingse Plas, the Netherlands, with emphasis on lanthanum-modified bentonite.

Lake Kralingse Plas (Rotterdam, the Netherlands), with a surface area of 114 ha and an average depth of 2.3 m, regularly suffered from cyanobacterial blooms. To improve water quality and meet the requirements of the European Union Water Framework Directive (WFD), the responsible authorities, following a system analysis, applied 1064 tonnes of lanthanum-modified bentonite (LMB, commercial name Phoslock®) to the entire lake in November 2021. Water quality was monitored by the water authorities on a monthly basis. Just before the LMB application, at 3, 15, and 36 months post-LMB application, sedi…

Use and Outcomes of Cost-Effectiveness Analyses and Additional Considerations in Pharmaceutical Reimbursement in the Netherlands.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: In the Netherlands, the National Health Care Institute (ZIN) assesses pharmaceuticals and advises the Minister of Health, Welfare, and Sport (MoH) on their reimbursement. Since 2015, two policy reforms-the introduction of willingness-to-pay reference values and the lock procedure, which temporarily withholds high-budget hospital pharmaceuticals from reimbursement pending assessment and price negotiations-have changed the decision-making process and expanded the role of cost-effectiveness analysis (CEA). This study provides a comprehensive overview of the use and outco…

Incidence and prevalence of small fibre neuropathy in the Netherlands: a multiple system estimation study.

BACKGROUND: Small fibre neuropathy (SFN) affects small myelinated Aδ- and unmyelinated C-fibres and causes neuropathic pain and autonomic symptoms. Earlier Dutch estimates, over a decade old, reported a minimum prevalence of 52.95 and an incidence of 11.75 per 100 000 adults. As recognition of SFN has likely increased, this study aimed to estimate the total SFN population in the Netherlands and to provide updated incidence and prevalence rates using a multiple system estimation (MSE) approach. METHODS: MSE was used to estimate the total adult SFN population by matching patients from three nat…

Evaluating the cost-effectiveness of adjuvanted influenza vaccine in the older adult population in the Netherlands.

In the Netherlands, older adults are vaccinated with the standard (dose) influenza vaccine (sIV). Enhanced vaccines, such as the adjuvanted influenza vaccine (aIV) and high-dose (HD-IV) influenza vaccine, have demonstrated clinical and economic benefits. This analysis aimed to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of replacing sIV by aIV in adults aged 60y and older and in high‑risk adults aged 50-59y in the Netherlands. A static decision-tree model was adapted to the Dutch setting to assess the associated costs and health outcomes. The model simulated a historic single average influenza season duri…

Implementing palliative reasoning in multiprofessional palliative care: A participatory action research in the Netherlands.

CONTEXT: In the Netherlands, two interventions exist to support healthcare professionals in assessing palliative care needs and providing multidimensional generalist palliative care. Separate use hindered communication, interprofessional collaboration, and multidimensional care. To address this, the two existing interventions were integrated into a single multiprofessional intervention, Palliative Reasoning. The Palliative Reasoning Working Method (PRWM) was developed to support its implementation in daily practice. OBJECTIVES: To iteratively adapt and implement the PRWM in primary care, hosp…

Knowledge and Attitudes Regarding Pharmacogenetics of Pharmacists in the Netherlands: A National Online Survey Study.

RATIONALE, AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: Pharmacogenetics is considered a promising method to improve pharmacotherapy, yet its implementation in clinical practice is hampered, limiting its potential benefits to the public. Previously, its uptake has been investigated within a variety of healthcare professional groups. Commonly cited barriers by prescribing physicians are lack of knowledge and insurance coverage. An important occupational group who may support physicians due to their expert knowledge are pharmacists. However, they have been understudied in research on pharmacogenetics implementation thu

Pre-procedural disclosure of potential diagnostic errors in radiology: public perspectives in the Netherlands.

OBJECTIVE: To assess public attitudes toward prospective disclosure of diagnostic error risk in radiologic imaging (i.e., informing patients in advance about the possibility a radiologic examination may yield an incorrect finding, rather than disclosure of an error after it has occurred) and to identify factors influencing these preferences. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A population-based survey was conducted in the Netherlands. Participants aged ≥ 18 years (n = 1524) responded to CT-scan vignettes describing pre-procedural potential diagnostic errors, varying by patient age (9, 26, 46, or 71 years…

Antibody waning and Bordetella pertussis resurgence after the COVID-19 pandemic in the Netherlands.

After relative absence of Bordetella pertussis during the COVID-19 pandemic, notifications in the Netherlands were increased from May 2023 till September 2024. We monitored the largest pertussis outbreak in decades and investigated underlying immunological dynamics based on IgG and IgA antibodies against pertussis antigens (Ptx, FHA & Prn). We analyzed serum from 418 participants (2-87 years) at five timepoints (November 2022-October 2024) from a nationwide prospective serosurveillance study (PIENTER-Corona). Weighted incidence over two years was 6.3% (95% CI: 4.4-8.2) in the Dutch population,…

'Not for me': Reasons for (non)participation in science communication activities on Artificial Intelligence in the Netherlands.

Artificial intelligence operates in a social context and affects everyone. Organizing science communication and engagement activities on the topic for all groups in society is therefore recommendable. However, research shows that mainly higher educated, already engaged citizens participate in science communication activities. To address this gap, our study collected insights from underrepresented citizens in the Netherlands regarding their views on and participation in science communication activities related to artificial intelligence. Using semi-structured interviews (n = 19), we qualitative…

Dutch-TIMELINESS: optimising choledocholithiasis treatment in the Netherlands - protocol of a national implementation project.

INTRODUCTION: The Dutch guideline 'Gallstone disease' (2016) recommends performing a cholecystectomy within 72 hours following endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) for common bile duct stones to prevent recurrent gallstone-related complications. Nevertheless, guideline adherence in the Netherlands remains low, and the time between ERCP and cholecystectomy often exceeds 72 hours. Our project aims to improve national guideline adherence to 85% or higher and thereby reduce the incidence of gallstone-related complications after ERCP. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The Dutch-TIMELINESS is …
