A Proof-of-Concept Spike Based Neuromorphic Brain-Computer Interface.

Closed-loop brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) hold promise for restoring function after neurological damage by dynamically processing neural signals and delivering targeted brain stimulation. To achieve clinically meaningful outcomes, such systems must operate with high spatiotemporal precision. This work aims to demonstrate a proof-of-concept neuromorphic BCI that processes neural spike events in near-real time, without necessitating preprocessing besides signal filtering and spike detection. Methods - We developed a system that acquires neural signals and streams spike events into a spiking n

TCGAN: Temporal Convolutional Generative Adversarial Network for Fetal ECG Extraction Using Single-Channel Abdominal ECG.

Noninvasive fetal ECG (FECG) monitoring holds significant importance in ensuring the normal development of the fetus. Since FECG is usually submerged by maternal ECG (MECG) and background noise in abdominal ECG (AECG), it is challenging to exactly restore the waveform details of FECG from AECG. To address this issue, a temporal convolutional generative adversarial network (TCGAN) is proposed for FECG extraction using single-channel AECG. In order to utilize both the global and local ECG features in time domain, we built an encoder-decoder architecture for designing generator. The model archite

Enhanced Brain Tumor Classification Through Optimized Semantic Preserved Generative Adversarial Networks.

Brain tumor is a most dangerous disease and requires accurate diagnosis in a short period to ensure the best treatment. Traditional methods for brain tumor classification (BTC) are quite effective, even though usually resulting in clinical manual analysis, which takes more time and prone to errors. Initially, the input image is collected from Brain Tumor dataset. The gathered image is given to preprocessing. In preprocessing stage, trust-based distributed set-membership filtering (TDSF) is used to remove the noise. The preprocessed output is fed to the quaternion offset linear canonical transf

Prediction of systemic lupus erythematosus-related genes based on graph attention network and deep neural network.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disorder intricately linked to genetic factors, with numerous approaches having identified genes linked to its development, diagnosis and prognosis. Despite genome-wide association analysis and gene knockout experiments confirming some genes associated with SLE, there are still numerous potential genes yet to be discovered. The search for relevant genes through biological experiments entails significant financial and human resources. With the advancement of computational technologies like deep learning, we aim to identify SLE-related genes th

Emerging neuromorphic devices.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has the ability of revolutionizing our lives and society in a radical way, by enabling machine learning in the industry, business, health, transportation, and many other fields. The ability to recognize objects, faces, and speech, requires, however, exceptional computational power and time, which is conflicting with the current difficulties in transistor scaling due to physical and architectural limitations. As a result, to accelerate the progress of AI, it is necessary to develop materials, devices, and systems that closely mimic the human brain. In this work, we

Modeling Neurodegeneration in silico With Deep Learning.

Deep neural networks, inspired by information processing in the brain, can achieve human-like performance for various tasks. However, research efforts to use these networks as models of the brain have primarily focused on modeling healthy brain function so far. In this work, we propose a paradigm for modeling neural diseases in silico with deep learning and demonstrate its use in modeling posterior cortical atrophy (PCA), an atypical form of Alzheimer's disease affecting the visual cortex. We simulated PCA in deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs) trained for visual object recognition by r

Simulating Accelerometer Signals of Parkinson's Gait Using Generative Adversarial Networks.

Wearable technologies have been demonstrated to have value in the objective assessment of Parkinson's disease. However, certain symptoms such as freezing of gait are challenging to monitor using current approaches. Data augmentation, wherein synthetic or simulated data is added to real world training sets to increase their size and diversity, has emerged as an approach to bolster the accuracy of machine learning models in other healthcare domains such as medical imaging. In this paper, we evaluate the use of generative adversarial networks to create synthetic accelerometry data representing bo

Characterising neurological time series data using biologically motivated networks of coupled discrete maps.

Artificial biochemical networks (ABNs) are a class of computational dynamical system whose architectures are motivated by the organisation of genetic and metabolic networks in biological cells. Using evolutionary algorithms to search for networks with diagnostic potential, we demonstrate how ABNs can be used to carry out classification when stimulated with time series data collected from human subjects with and without Parkinson's disease. Artificial metabolic networks, composed of coupled discrete maps, offer the best recognition of Parkinsonian behaviour, achieving accuracies in the region o

General Network Learning Rules Based on DNA Strand Displacement for Thyroid Disease Prediction.

Learning rules are critical to the problem-solving ability of neural networks. Significant progress has been made in neural networks based on deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) strand displacement (DSD). Traditional chemical reaction networks (CRNs) usually focus on the implementation of one type of learning rule. The coexistence of multiple learning rules remains challenging. In this article, CRNs based on DSD are constructed. The networks consist of a weight multiplication module, an activation function module, a learning signal module, a weight update module, and a weight output module. By explori

Simulation and parameter optimization of the temperature field in mild moxibustion using physics-informed neural networks.

Accurate prediction of transient tissue temperature fields is important for understanding the thermal response of mild moxibustion and supporting treatment-parameter screening. In this study, a two-dimensional axisymmetric physics-informed neural network (PINN) model was developed to simulate bioheat transfer during mild moxibustion. The Pennes bioheat equation, layered tissue properties, and coupled radiation-convection boundary conditions at the skin surface were embedded into the loss function. Nine L9 (34) orthogonal cases were designed to evaluate the effects of moxa-burning temperature,

C2-LSM: A Storm-NoC Based Neuromorphic Processor for High-Accuracy Liquid State Machine With Cube-Cluster Topology.

The liquid state machine (LSM), a reservoir computing variant of spiking neural networks (SNNs), has been widely adopted for its low training complexity. In this work, we propose C2-LSM, a neuromorphic processor designed through algorithm-hardware co-design to achieve high accuracy across diverse tasks. At the algorithm level, inspired by the "small-world" structure of the biological brain, we introduce a novel reservoir layer in which neurons are interconnected using a cube-cluster topology. For hardware implementation, the customized C2-LSM processor supports runtime configurability of reser

IGFD-Net: Illumination-guided frequency decoupling for polarization image fusion.

The intensity image (S0) mainly captures the scene radiance information, while the degree of linear polarization (DoLP) reflects the material properties of objects. The effective fusion of the two modalities contributes to robust visual perception. However, existing polarization image fusion methods struggle to simultaneously maintain photometric consistency and saliency preservation. Particularly under complex illumination conditions, most methods fuse polarization information indiscriminately, leading to brightness drift and structural artifacts. To address this issue, we propose an illumina

Temporal deep neural network for tactile sensing in artificial finger pulp skin.

Tactile perception plays a vital role in artificial finger pulp skin, especially in regions responsible for grasping and touching tasks, where precise sensing of deformation position and applied force is critical. Conventional demodulation methods often fail to fully leverage temporal correlations in data during the pressing process, limiting the accuracy of tactile demodulation. To address this, we propose a tactile sensing system based on quasi-distributed Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBGs) integrated into artificial finger pulp skin, along with a two-stage hybrid LSTM-Transformer neural network (T

Implicit and explicit statistical learning in reading: Evidence from a randomized controlled-learning study and computational modeling.

A key challenge in reading acquisition is understanding how learners extract the complex probabilistic mappings between print, meaning, and sound. Statistical learning (SL) theory offers a mechanistic account of how such mappings are acquired, whether implicitly through exposure or explicitly through instruction. We conducted a randomized controlled-learning study in Chinese, a writing system characterized by multiple sub-lexical regularities linking orthography, semantics, and phonology. Ninety-five 2nd-3rd graders with or at risk for dyslexia were randomly assigned to one of three groups: an

Pyramid Network With Quality-Aware Contrastive Loss for Retinal Image Quality Assessment.

Captured retinal images vary greatly in quality. Low-quality images increase the risk of misdiagnosis. This motivates to design effective retinal image quality assessment (RIQA) methods. Current deep learning-based methods usually classify the image into three levels of "Good", "Usable", and "Reject", while ignoring the quantitative feedback for more detailed quality scores. This study proposes a unified RIQA framework, named QAC-Net, that can evaluate the quality of retinal images in both qualitative and quantitative manners. To improve the prediction accuracy, QAC-Net focuses on extracting d

Dual-Branch Multi-Task Regressor and Transformer Model for Endoscopic Image Classification.

Endoscopy plays a crucial role in the early diagnosis of colon cancer. The manual processing of images by skilled endoscopists is time-consuming, making automatic image classification highly valuable. We propose a novel multi-label classification method that integrates complementary learning from both local and global approaches. The model comprises a Swin Transformer branch for global feature extraction and a modified VGG16-based CNN branch for local feature analysis. The learning capability of the CNN branch is enhanced by concatenating a saliency map and the prediction of a texture feature

Accelerated inference for thyroid nodule recognition in ultrasound imaging using FPGA.

Thyroid cancer is the most prevalent malignant tumour in the endocrine system, with its incidence steadily rising in recent years. Current central processing units (CPUs) and graphics processing units (GPUs) face significant challenges in terms of processing speed, energy consumption, cost, and scalability in the identification of thyroid nodules, making them inadequate for the demands of future green, efficient, and accessible healthcare. To overcome these limitations, this study proposes an efficient quantized inference method using a field-programmable gate array (FPGA). We employ the YOLOv

CGNet: A Complex-valued Graph Network for jointly learning amplitude-phase information in EEG-based brain-computer interfaces.

The synergy between amplitude and phase in electroencephalogram (EEG)-based brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) provides comprehensive and essential insights into neural oscillatory processes. However, constrained by real-valued computation paradigms, most deep learning methods have to process amplitude and phase independently, neglecting their crucial interaction mechanisms. To address this issue, we construct a Complex-valued Graph Network (CGNet) to capture comprehensive information from EEG signals, where both amplitude and phase information are encoded into the complex-valued representation.

Generalizable AI approach for detecting projection type and left-right reversal in chest X-rays.

The verification of chest X-ray images involves several checkpoints, including orientation and reversal. To address the challenges of manual verification, this study developed an artificial intelligence (AI)-based system using a deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) to automatically verify the consistency between the imaging direction and examination orders. The system classified the chest X-ray images into four categories: anteroposterior (AP), posteroanterior (PA), flipped AP, and flipped PA. To evaluate the impact of internal and external datasets on the classification accuracy, the DCNN
