BACKGROUND: Participatory working time scheduling (PWTS) is a form of self-scheduling involving collaboration between employees and employers. PWTS is common in Swedish health care, but its characteristics can vary substantially between workplaces. This study investigated whether the characteristics of PWTS were associated with (1) the ergonomic characteristics of the schedules that emerge from this process and (2) employee satisfaction with those schedules-two indices reflecting the sustainability of work hours.
METHODS: Two hundred and forty-eight nurses, assistant nurses and care assistant

The most significant and common cause of anaemia is iron deficiency, which occurs when iron absorption cannot meet the body's demands due to growth, pregnancy, poor nutrition, malabsorption or blood loss. It is estimated that in the UK 11% of the adult population have iron-deficiency anaemia (IDA) and investigation is essential to exclude significant pathology as the underlying cause. It has been shown that IDA is responsible for 57 000 hospital admissions in the UK, and at least 10% of gastroenterology referrals per annum. IDA is a major red flag symptom for gastrointestinal cancer. At the Ro

INTRODUCTION: Long COVID is a multisystem condition with challenging diagnosis. Nurse-navigation, a patient-centered intervention, can enhance education and care access. Analyzing patient-nurse text message exchanges using natural language processing (NLP) enables automated extraction of clinical information, potentially supporting early identification of long COVID. We aimed to evaluate a digital nurse navigation platform integrating a predictive model for long COVID identification as a triage-assisting tool and to assess user acceptance.
METHODS: This observational study included patients a

BACKGROUND: Nursing in palliative medicine combines primary patient care with the special challenges of this medical field (eg, handling the processes of dying, grief, and death). These cause high stress levels and burden on the nursing staff, resulting in an early exit from working life because of physical or psychological disorders like burnout.
OBJECTIVE: DiPa (digitally identifying and minimizing stressors in palliative care) is a prospective study investigating the feasibility of measuring burden and its causes in palliative care using methods of subjective and objective stress detection

Nurses need therapeutic communication skills to de-escalate stressful situations. This qualitative study aimed to measure the effectiveness of role-play verbal de-escalation training simulations for Associate of Science degree nursing students. A three-step training process was implemented to teach verbal de-escalation techniques. Simulations were conducted using simulation patients rather than high-fidelity mannequins. Survey and debriefing data were evaluated using qualitative analysis. Student participants showed enhanced critical thinking and clinical preparedness for real patients, improv

The Women Speak writing project explores the use of writing as a therapeutic process with homeless women at an urban drop-in center. The project was developed in response to the women's desire to give voice to their experiences. By speaking about and sharing the experiences of their lives, a sense of empowerment through expression began. Nursing students and faculty working at the drop-in center were challenged to re-think the traditional clinical site relationship which gives highest priority to meeting the needs of students and faculty.

Chlamydia trachomatis infections are the most prevalent of all sexually transmitted diseases and can be transmitted to the neonate during the birth process. Neonatal chlamydial infections include inclusion conjunctivitis and chlamydial pneumonia. These infections cause no reported mortality but are associated with a high incidence of morbidity in the newborn. Nursing care is vitally important in prevention, early detection, and management of neonates with chlamydial infections. A knowledge of Chlamydia, its risk factors, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, and treatment will assure an improved

BACKGROUND: Nurses' turnover intention has long been a global concern due to its impact on the stability of the nursing workforce and the quality of healthcare services. Numerous studies have highlighted a strong relationship between psychological distress and turnover intention. However, very little is known about how psychological distress influences turnover intention among nurses. This study aims to explore the relationship between psychological distress and turnover intention, focusing on the mediation role of job satisfaction and the moderating role of social support among Chinese nurses

BACKGROUND: A hand photography protocol was needed to ascertain the presence and severity of dermatitis in a trial testing the effectiveness of a behaviour change intervention to prevent hand dermatitis in nurses.
METHODS: We developed the protocol in 3 stages: (1) we established a procedure for collecting hand photographs; (2) we conducted a stepwise validation process to agree rules for diagnosing and determining the severity of hand dermatitis; and (3) we trained a research nurse to screen out "clear" cases.
RESULTS: We developed and trained fieldworkers (n = 97) in a procedure for collec

OBJECTIVES: To obtain insight into the views of relevant 'stakeholders' (parents, teachers and school nurses) in dental screening in schools.
METHODS: Eight schools in Chester and Ellesmere Port in the UK formed the setting of this study. A teacher from each school participated in one-to-one interviews, and focus groups for parents were carried out in each school. A focus group for school nurses working in the locality was also held. The same trained researcher undertook the interviews and focus groups; all interviews and focus groups were tape recorded, transcribed verbatim and thematically

Shock is a life-threatening situation for which circulatory failure represents a major potential complication. While there are numerous disposing factors, the detrimental impacts on the human body are similar. Drop in blood pressure is a common clinical presentation. Severity of impact and chance of survival from shock depend heavily on the speed with which blood pressure recovers and tissue oxygenation is preserved. This article describes the types, pathophysiological process, and major complications of shock, along with relevant disposing factors, risk groups, assessment techniques, monitori

Proximal femoral focal deficiency (PFFD) is an uncommon congenital defect that involves the femur and acetabulum in varying degrees. It may occur with or without fibular hemimelia and can be unilateral or bilateral in presentation. Children with PFFD and their families are faced with many treatment decisions, both nonsurgical and surgical. Nursing care is central in the care of these children and their families both for psychosocial support and teaching during the decision-making process and for being a patient advocate to help meet postoperative and rehabilitation goals.

In 1991, our University Hospital initiated a series of strategic changes designed to increase organizational effectiveness and efficiency, foster a culture of commitment to customer-driven service, and flatten the organizational structure, pushing decision making closer to the point of service. These events, although proactive and positive in their intent, triggered a significant, debilitating response among many members of the nursing staff. The authors discuss the experience of this organization, examines the process of transition and the responses of staff members to change, and provides re
