To investigate the morphological changes of local eosinophils in the lungs, we observed the ultrastructure of eosinophils in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) from patients with eosinophilic pneumonia. We also measured the BALF concentration of eosinophil cationic protein (ECP) as an index of the activation of eosinophils. The eosinophils in BALF from patients with eosinophilic pneumonia showed various ultrastructural changes compared to eosinophils in BALF of the control patient. Four cases which was suspected of congenital cholesteatoma were treated in the past 15 years. The age of the patients ranged from 4 to 17 years. In all cases, the cholesteatoma arose in the middle ear. In one case the cholesteatoma extended into the mastoid cavity. Tympanoplasty of colummella type III was indicated. Postoperative hearing gain was from 20 to 30dB. Although the incidence is low, otolaryngologists must be aware of congenital cholesteatoma when treating conductive hearing loss with a normal ear drum.

From January 1, 1987 through June 30, 1990, 126 infants of small gestational age (SGA) born in our hospital were studied prospectively. The incidence of SGA infant > or = 37 weeks was 71.4%. The incidence of very low birth weight infants was only 6.3%. The incidence of birth asphyxia in this group (14.9%) was 3 times higher than that in full term infants; this incidence showed negative correlation with gestational age and birth weight. Using echo-planar (EP) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow patterns have been demonstrated in the normal subject and patients with pathological conditions including communicating hydrocephalus, aqueduct stenosis and syringohydromyelia. Snap-shot imaging times of 128 ms allow detailed demonstration of transient intraventricular CSF flow patterns, which is not possible with conventional MRI. The potential of EPI as a method for qualitative and quantitative assessment of CSF dynamics is illustrated.

The respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) model induced by oleic acid injection in dogs and treated by anisodamine were observed. Claw-like projections and related structures on cilium tips in neurenteric cyst epithelium are described. The ciliary claws are about 20 nm in length and just beneath them four parallel electron-dense areas or lines are discernible. Similar structures were also observed in another case of neurenteric cyst. These structures are very similar to those reported previously, and it is suggested that they are commonly present in various ciliated epithelia in Man.

A case is presented of a 28-year-old man with Hand-Schüller-Christian's disease whose initial manifestations were skull bones lesions and a diffuse interstitial fibrosis. Three years later the patient developed diabetes insipidus without changes in the hypothalamic-hypophysial region on computed tomography. Some features of the clinical picture are discussed.

Discrepancy between the terms of clinical observation and normalization of gastric functions was established on the basis of a time-course study of gastric secretory function in 189 diphylobothriasis patients examined before the treatment and 1-2, 5-6, 10-12 months after it. In a comparative study of MR images of 289 neurosurgical patients, loss of the signal intensity (signal void phenomenon) of CSF in the aqueduct was observed in 77 patients. This signal void phenomenon was seen most frequently in infants with chronic subdural hematoma (12 of 18) and patients of all age groups suffering from communicating hydrocephalus (10 of 14). Altogether, 92 patients were diagnosed as having genitourinary tuberculosis, and were treated at our clinic from 1972 to 1981. These patients form the basis for our statistical study. Out of 692 patients registered in the lithium clinic, King George's Medical College, Lucknow, 122 patients suffering from affective disorders, receiving lithium for at least 6 months continuously, having had at least 5 serum lithium estimations done and having been evaluated at least once in 6 months while on follow-up, were analysed with a view to study the relapses.
