Changes in stroke and TIA admissions during the COVID-19 pandemic: A meta-analysis.

PURPOSE: To perform a meta-analysis on how the admissions of stroke and transient ischemic attack (TIA) changed during the Corona Virus infection-19 (COVID-19) pandemic and evaluate if the effect was depending on stroke severity. METHODS: Observational cohort studies comparing the number of stroke and/or TIA admissions during a period of the pandemic compared to a period before the pandemic were identified in PubMed and Embase. After excluding studies with overlapping populations and studies without satisfactory case ascertainment, data was extracted and meta-analyzed. FINDINGS: A total of 5

How to avoid harm with feeding critically ill patients: a synthesis of viewpoints of a basic scientist, dietitian and intensivist.

The optimal feeding strategy in critically ill patients is a matter of debate, with current guidelines recommending different strategies regarding energy and protein targets. Several recent trials have added to the debate and question our previous understanding of the provision of nutrition during critical illness. This narrative review aims to provide a summary of interpretation of recent evidence from the view of basic scientist, critical care dietitian and intensivist, resulting in joined suggestions for both clinical practice and future research. In the most recent randomised controlled tr

Could Celiac Disease and Overweight/Obesity Coexist in School-Aged Children and Adolescents? A Systematic Review.

Background: Celiac disease (CD) is a multifactorial, immune-mediated enteropathic disorder that may occur at any age with heterogeneous clinical presentation. In the last years, unusual manifestations have become very frequent, and currently, it is not so uncommon to diagnose CD in subjects with overweight or obesity, especially in adults; however, little is known in the pediatric population. This systematic review aims to evaluate the literature regarding the association between CD and overweight/obesity in school-age children. Methods: The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and

Risk factors for preterm birth: an umbrella review of meta-analyses of observational studies.

BACKGROUND: Preterm birth defined as delivery before 37 gestational weeks is a leading cause of neonatal and infant morbidity and mortality. The aim of this study is to summarize the evidence from meta-analyses of observational studies on risk factors associated with PTB, evaluate whether there are indications of biases in this literature, and identify which of the previously reported associations are supported by robust evidence. METHODS: We searched PubMed and Scopus until February 2021, in order to identify meta-analyses examining associations between risk factors and PTB. For each meta-an

Characteristics of Neuroimaging and Behavioural Phenotype in Polish Patients with PIGV-CDG-An Observational Study and Literature Review.

Congenital disorders of glycosylation (CDGs) are a wide group of genetic diseases characterised by a severe clinical spectrum, consisting of developmental delays, dysmorphisms, and neurological deficits. Mutations in the PIGV gene lead to a disorder called hyperphosphatasia with impaired intellectual development syndrome 1 (HPMRS1), distinct from other CDGs in terms of hyperphosphatemia related to abnormal ALP activity and brachytelephalangy. This article discusses the phenotype of six Polish patients with HPMRS1 with a special focus on behavioural and imaging features, which were not addresse

Sexual Function in Women with Breast Cancer: An Evidence Map of Observational Studies.

Breast cancer (BC) is the leading cause of cancer in women, and has implications for sexual function (SF). In this study, we used an evidence map to identify, describe, and organise the current available evidence regarding SF in women with BC. We searched the MEDLINE, PsycINFO, and CINAHL databases for observational studies assessing SF in women with BC published in English, Spanish, Portuguese, and French between 2000 and 2021 (sample ≥ 50 women). Of the 64 included studies (13,257 women with BC), 58 were published since 2010. Women who were married, partnered, or in relationships represented

Study Protocol Modeling Evoked Pain in Older African Americans With Knee Osteoarthritis.

BACKGROUND: African American (AA) older adults with knee osteoarthritis experience more severe chronic pain and advanced physical disability. One of the most prominent stimuli that provokes knee pain is movement. Research suggests that, compared to Whites, AAs report significantly higher movement-evoked pain (MEP) in the knee. However, little is known about the biopsychosocial-behavioral mechanisms underlying MEP. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to present a study protocol to (a) characterize the biopsychosocial-behavioral mechanisms that predict MEP in AAs with knee osteoarthritis and (

Sonographic Evaluation of the Mechanism of Active Labor (SonoLabor Study): observational study protocol regarding the implementation of the sonopartogram.

INTRODUCTION: Over the last decades, a large body of literature has shown that intrapartum clinical digital pelvic estimations of fetal head position, station and progression in the pelvic canal are less accurate, compared with ultrasound (US) scan. Given the increasing evidence regarding the advantages of using US to evaluate the mechanism of labour, our study protocol aims to develop sonopartograms for fetal cephalic presentations. They will allow for a more objective evaluation of labour progression than the traditional labour monitoring, which could enable more rapid decisions regarding th

Medications for gout and its comorbidities: mutual benefits?

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To review recent literature with relevance to the management of multimorbid patients with gout, i.e., gout medication repurposed for comorbidities and vice versa. RECENT FINDINGS: Adding to the previous success of interleukin-1 inhibition, two trials on low-dose colchicine's role in cardiovascular disease (CVD) demonstrated potential benefits in patients with or without gout. In Colchicine Cardiovascular Outcomes Trial, a composite CVD endpoint was reduced by 23% among patients who had experienced a recent myocardial infarction. In Low-Dose Colchicine 2, the composite CVD e

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and risk of incident chronic kidney disease: an updated meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Studies reported a significant association between non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and increased risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD). However, whether this risk changes with increasing severity of NAFLD remains uncertain. We performed a meta-analysis of observational studies to quantify the magnitude of the association between NAFLD and risk of incident CKD. DESIGN: We systematically searched PubMed, Web of Science and Scopus from January 2000 to August 2020 using predefined keywords to identify observational studies with a follow-up duration of ≥1 year, in which NAFLD w

Systematic review and meta-analysis of short-term outcomes with drug-coated balloons vs. stenting in acute myocardial infarction.

The role of drug-coated balloons (DCBs) in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) remains controversial. We performed a meta-analysis of all published studies comparing the outcomes of DCBs vs. stenting in AMI patients. Four studies with 497 patients (534 lesions) were included (three randomized controlled trials and one observational study). During a mean follow-up of 9 months (range 6-12 months), DCBs were associated with similar risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (5% vs. 4.4%; OR 1.24, 95% CI: [0.34, 4.51], p = 0.74, I2 = 35%), all-cause mortality (0.02% vs. 0.04%; OR 077,
