Update on neuromyelitis optica: natural history and management.

Neuromyelitis optica or Devic disease is an inflammatory disorder of the central nervous system. It is caused by antibodies that attack aquaporin 4 water channels in the cell membrane of astrocytic foot processes at the blood brain barrier. It can involve the optic nerve, the spinal cord and beyond. Here we review its pathophysiology, clinical features, and therapy.

Interfacial Engineering of Two-Dimensional Perovskite Memristors toward Reliable and Flexible Optoelectronic Memory Arrays.

Two-dimensional (2D) Ruddlesden-Popper halide perovskites are promising candidates for flexible optoelectronic memories owing to their tunable composition, reduced power consumption, and intrinsic structural anisotropy. Yet, achieving long-term reliability and environmental stability in perovskite-based memristors remains a major challenge. Here, we demonstrate highly oriented (PEA)2MA4Pb5I16 thin films integrated into optoelectronic memristors, where interface optimization with softly deposited Ag nanoparticles (NPs) enhances device performance without damaging the active layer. The resulting

Kurtosis Transformation for Multi-Source Domain Generalization Segmentation of OCT Images From Multi-Manufacturers' Devices.

OBJECTIVE: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) images can visualize retinal layers and fundus lesions. Retinal structure segmentation is of great significance in early lesion detection and treatment guidance. However, devices from different OCT manufacturers are largely different from each other, which often leads to degraded results in image segmentation. METHODS: To enrich the diversity of multi-source domains in intensity distributions and image contrasts of multi-manufacturers' OCT images, a kurtosis transformation method is proposed to generate a kurtosis-transformed image. To make the ge

Large-Area Deterministic Stamping of 2D Materials on Patterned Surfaces.

2D materials and their monolayers have attracted widespread interest by virtue of their unique electronic and optical properties. In addition to their remarkable physical characteristics, their atomically thin nature enables integration in ultracompact photonic and electronic devices, with potential for dynamic tunability via strain, charge carrier modulation or heterostructure engineering. While early research relied on micrometer-scale mechanically exfoliated flakes, recent advances─particularly gold-assisted exfoliation of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs)─have enabled the preparatio

Optical coherence tomography: Translation from 3D-printed vascular models of the anterior cerebral circulation to the first human images of implanted surface modified flow diverters.

BACKGROUND: The new generation of flow diverters includes a surface modification with a synthetic biocompatible polymer, which makes the device more biocompatible and less thrombogenic. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) can be used to visualize perforators, stent wall apposition, and intra-stent thrombus. Unfortunately real world application of this technology has been limited because of the limited navigability of these devices in the intracranial vessels. In this report, we share our experience of using 3D-printed neurovascular anatomy models to simulate and test the navigability of a comme

Graphene-Based Light Sensing: Fabrication, Characterisation, Physical Properties and Performance.

Graphene and graphene-based materials exhibit exceptional optical and electrical properties with great promise for novel applications in light detection. However, several challenges prevent the full exploitation of these properties in commercial devices. Such challenges include the limited linear dynamic range (LDR) of graphene-based photodetectors, the lack of efficient generation and extraction of photoexcited charges, the smearing of photoactive junctions due to hot-carriers effects, large-scale fabrication and ultimately the environmental stability of the constituent materials. In order to

Thickness and defect dependent electronic, optical and thermoelectric features of [Formula: see text].

Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) receive significant attention due to their outstanding electronic and optical properties. In this study, we investigate the electronic, optical, and thermoelectric properties of single and few layer [Formula: see text] in detail utilizing first-principles methods based on the density functional theory (DFT). Within the scope of both PBE and HSE06 including spin orbit coupling (SOC), the simulations predict the electronic band gap values to decrease as the number of layers increases. Moreover, spin-polarized DFT calculations combined with the semi-classic

Picosecond ultralow-power switching device based on an antiferromagnet.

Developing an ultrafast and energy-efficient nonvolatile switching device may pose a strong impact on emerging computing architectures. However, processing speed has plateaued in the nanosecond regime, as further acceleration demands excessively large write power. We demonstrate ultralow power in picosecond switching using heterostructures of the antiferromagnet Mn3Sn and heavy metal tantalum, which exhibit spin-orbit torque switching by electrical pulses as short as 40 picoseconds. Power consumption in the picosecond regime is several orders of magnitude lower than in ferromagnetic counterpar

Rapid detection and quantification of milk adulterants using a nanoclusters-based fluorescent optical tongue.

A paper-based sensor array consisting of eight nanoclusters (NCs) combined with multivariate analysis was used as a rapid method for the determination of animal sources of milk; goat, camel, sheep and cow. It was also used to detect and quantify three adulterants including sodium hypochlorite, hydrogen peroxide and formaldehyde in milk. The changes in fluorescence intensity of the NCs were quantified using a smartphone when the sensor array was immersed in the milk samples. The device generated a specific colorimetric signature for milk samples from different animals and for different adultera

[Acute loss of vision in children].

The differential diagnosis of acute loss of vision in children includes acute loss of vision due to retinal or optic nerve disease, and cortical blindness. The retinal disorders which may be mis diagnosed as optic neuritis include Leber neuroretinitis, Leber hereditary optic neuropathy, and Stargardt macular dystrophy. Retinal changes which evolve in neuroretinitis, and the pseudopapilledema in Leber heredity optic neuropathy are helpful in differentiating these disorders from optic neuritis. Stargardt macular dystrophy, a disorder associated with a variety of mutations, may be mis diagnosed a

Complex spike activity of Purkinje cells in the ventral uvula and nodulus of pigeons in response to translational optic flow.

The complex spike (CS) activity of Purkinje cells in the ventral uvula and nodulus of the vestibulocerebellum was recorded from anesthetized pigeons in response to translational optic flow. Translational optic flow was produced using a "translator" projector: a mechanical device that projected a translational optic flowfield onto the walls, ceiling, and floor of the room and encompassed the entire binocular visual field. CS activity was broadly tuned but maximally modulated in response to translational optic flow along a "best" axis. Each neuron was assigned a vector representing the direction
