Longitudinal changes in the position and thickness of the peak peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer in school children.

PURPOSE: This study investigated the relationship between changes in the position and thickness of the peak circumpapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (cpRNFL) and axial elongation in schoolchildren. METHODS: This prospective cohort study involved the right eyes of 75 elementary school students examined over a period of six years (from the age of 8-9 years to 14-15 years). During the first and final years, all participants underwent optical axial length measurements, color fundus photography, and cpRNFL thickness measurements using optical coherence tomography. The supratemporal (ST) and infra

Disentangling crossing fibers with advanced dMRI methods reveals bundle-specific degeneration across the visual system in asymmetric glaucoma.

Diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (dMRI) is a non-invasive neuroimaging technique that enables in vivo assessment of white matter microstructure and is highly sensitive to tissue alterations associated with disease. Although substantial evidence links diffusion-derived metrics to underlying white matter tissue properties, the presence of complex within-voxel axonal configurations complicates their biological interpretation. Several methods have been proposed to assess diffusion properties of individual crossing axonal populations, but their validation and clinical applicability remain limit

Demyelinating peripheral neuropathy in Devic disease.

This is a report of a 20-year-old man with typical features of Devic disease (neuromyelitis optica) associated with demyelinating peripheral neuropathy. A sural nerve biopsy showed markedly decreased myelinated fibers of a large diameter. Teased fiber preparations showed segmental remyelination in 50% of examined fibers, as well as a few demyelination. Demyelination of bilateral optic nerves, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves at the same time suggests a possibility of common pathogenetic mechanisms in both the central and peripheral nervous systems.

[Dynamic observations of the optic cup and its modes of damages in glaucoma].

Changes in the optic disk and retinal nerve fiber layer are the sole objective indicators of glaucomatous damages. Many investigators held that damages in the optic nerves in glaucoma preceded changes in the visual functions. The optic cups and visual fields of 106 primary open angle glaucoma eyes and 207 eyes of glaucoma suspects were followed up an average 16.6 months. Among 35 eyes that developed changes in the optic cup, the cup changes preceded the visual field changes in 78%, and both changes occurred simultaneously in 22%.

Monocular band optic atrophy.

Band or "bow tie" optic atrophy is characterized by well-described ophthalmoscopic findings in the optic nerve and nerve fiber layer and homonymous hemianopia. It is typically associated with compressive lesions of the pregeniculate postchiasmal visual pathway or, less commonly, congenital malformations affecting the postgeniculate radiations or cortex. A unique case with band optic atrophy is described because of the unilateral visual defect. The optic atrophy is strictly unilateral and without an obvious structural lesion that could explain the optic disc damage. However, incidental cerebral

[The retinal nerve fiber layer in normal eyes and in glaucoma. I. Semiquantitative data of 398 eyes with glaucoma].

Atrophy of the optic nerve is associated with changes of the retinal fiber layer (RNFL). Using red-free photographs the authors examined the RNFL of 398 eyes with chronic primary open-angle glaucoma and compared it with the RNFL of 234 normal eyes. The glaucoma group was divided into five stages and the fundus into four sectors. Differences between the normal and glaucoma eyes were: (1) The sequence of the sectors, with regard to the best visibility of the retinal nerve fiber bundles, was changed. In the normal eyes the nerve fiber bundles were most often best visible in the inferior temporal

[Current state and perspectives of laser use in vascular surgery].

We report on a project to determine the feasibility of treating carotid artery stenosis with the argon laser (1985) and the clinical results of recanalising peripheral arteries. Training for the above-mentioned project showed that sapphire-tipped Nd:YAG laser optical fibers are the proper instruments for recanalisation. New attempts with new catheter material should make the recanalisation of the carotid artery possible in the future.

Case Report: A Neuro-Ophthalmological Assessment of Vision Loss in a Pediatric Case of McCune-Albright Syndrome.

Patients diagnosed with McCune-Albright Syndrome (MAS) frequently manifest craniofacial fibrous dysplasia (FD). Craniofacial FD can impinge nerve fibers causing visual loss as well as craniofacial pain. Surgical decompression of affected nerves is performed, with variable efficacy, in an attempt to restore function or alleviate symptoms. Here, we present a case of a 12-year-old MAS patient with visual deficits, particularly in the left eye (confirmed by enlarged blind spots on Goldmann visual field testing), and craniofacial pain. Decompression surgery of the left optic nerve mildly improved v

Simulation study of nasotracheal and orotracheal fiberoptic intubation with the Aintree Intubation Catheter.

AIM: Fiber-optic tracheal intubation is an essential technique to secure the airway for difficult airway and cervical cord injury victims. However, there is an anxiety about the vocal cord passage of tracheal tubes because of the potential of collision with the surroundings of the vocal cords. This study aimed to examine the utility of the Aintree Intubation Catheter in nasotracheal and orotracheal intubation. METHODS: Participants were 21 anesthesiologists with more than 2 years of experience in clinical anesthesia. Participants attempted fiber-optic tracheal intubation through the oral or n

Effects of UV-A irradiation on lens morphology and optics.

Epidemiological studies have indicated that ultraviolet radiation (UVR) is one of the main factors leading to senile cataract formation. We investigated morphological changes in the eye lens caused by UVR-A. Twenty three pairs of lenses obtained from 23 one-year-old calves were used for this study. For each pair, one lens was exposed to 44 J/m(2) UVR in the 365 nm wavelength region while the contralateral lens was not exposed and served as a control. The lenses were placed in specially designed organ culture containers for pre-incubation. Lenses were exposed to UVR after one day in culture. Af

Leber hereditary optic neuropathy: clinical and molecular genetic findings.

Leber hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) is a maternally inherited disease characterized by acute or subacute painless central visual loss usually in young adults, predominantly in males. Except for optic atrophy, LHON patients are usually otherwise healthy. Occasionally, LHON is associated with neurological, cardiac, and skeletal changes. The clinical course of LHON has several stages. Peripapillary microangiopathy is present from the beginning. Microangiopathy disappears as the disease progresses towards the end stages. Simultaneously, the retinal nerve fiber layer fades from view, first pap

Optic nerve crush: axonal responses in wild-type and bcl-2 transgenic mice.

Retinal ganglion cells of transgenic mice overexpressing the anti-apoptotic protein Bcl-2 in neurons show a dramatic increase of survival rate after axotomy. We used this experimental system to test the regenerative potentials of central neurons after reduction of nonpermissive environmental factors. Survival of retinal ganglion cells 1 month after intracranial crush of the optic nerve was found to be 100% in adult bcl-2 mice and 44% in matched wild-type (wt) mice. In the optic nerve, and particularly at the crush site, fibers regrowing spontaneously or simply sprouting were absent in both wt

[Value of MRI in the diagnosis of unilateral optic nerve aplasia: a case report].

Optic nerve aplasia is a rare congenital anomaly consisting of complete absence of the optic disc and nerve, ganglion cells and nerve fibers, and retinal blood vessels. Optic nerve aplasia may be associated or not with anomalies of the eye ball, and may be unilateral or more rarely bilateral, the latter sometimes associated with major central nervous system anomalies. We report the MRI appearance of a case of unilateral optic nerve aplasia associated with microphthalmos. Coronal T2 weighted and 3D T1 weighted images disclosed the absence of the 3 portions of the optic nerve. This observation s

Collagen microstructural factors influencing optic nerve head biomechanics.

PURPOSE: Previous studies have suggested that the lamina cribrosa (LC) and its surrounding sclera are biomechanically important in the pathogenesis of glaucoma, but many were limited by assumptions of tissue isotropy and homogeneity. Here, we used an improved biomechanical model driven by experimental measurements of scleral and LC collagen fiber organization to more accurately evaluate optic nerve head (ONH) biomechanics. METHODS: Collagen fiber organization was quantitatively mapped across human ONH cryosections (three normal and three glaucomatous) using small-angle light scattering (SALS)

Processing of visual signals related to self-motion in the cerebellum of pigeons.

In this paper I describe the key features of optic flow processing in pigeons. Optic flow is the visual motion that occurs across the entire retina as a result of self-motion and is processed by subcortical visual pathways that project to the cerebellum. These pathways originate in two retinal-recipient nuclei, the nucleus of the basal optic root (nBOR) and the nucleus lentiformis mesencephali, which project to the vestibulocerebellum (VbC) (folia IXcd and X), directly as mossy fibers, and indirectly as climbing fibers from the inferior olive. Optic flow information is integrated with vestibul
