PURPOSE: The objective of this study was to develop a model to identify patients in whom drotrecogin alfa (activated) (DAA) might be administered for periods shorter than the recommended 96 hours.
METHODS: We did a retrospective chart review of all 124 patients treated with a standard 96-hour infusion of DAA in a 31-bed department of intensive care. Using a stepwise approach, we identified and combined parameters that could help predict outcomes to achieve the best sensitivity associated with 100% specificity.

Specimens of human breast cancers and fibrosarcomas were incubated for 4 to 72 hours as organ cultures. The effect of various concentrations of testosterone, progesterone, and 17-beta-estradiol on cell survival and multiplication was measured as changes in incorporation of H3-TdR into DNA. Both types of tumor reacted to the hormones; both stimulations and inhibitions were recorded. Statistical analysis of data demonstrated possible influence of factors other than hormone treatment. The specificity of hormone sensitivity assays in vitro is questioned.

In this paper, the distribution and redistribution of the amphetamine derivative, 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA, ecstasy) is brought into focus. Animal experimental data were compared with internationally reported MDMA-related human fatalities: in general, these turned out to be parallel with each other. Due to its inherent properties (e.g. significant volume of distribution), MDMA is liable to postmortem redistribution. An acidic form (pI 4.6) of glutathione transferase has been purified to homogeneity from normal and tumor specimens of human breast. The two proteins did not differ significantly in their molecular and catalytic properties. The enzyme has a molecular weight of 46,000 and is composed of two identical subunits. The data presented, including amino acid composition, substrate specificity and immunological studies, give strong evidence that the glutathione transferase of human breast, placenta and erythrocytes are similar if not identical proteins.
