PURPOSE: Rectal prolapse typically occurs in elderly patients, who are often poor surgical candidates because of the presence of multiple comorbidities. Abdominal approaches to procidentia have low recurrence rates but are associated with higher rates of morbidity and mortality. Perineal rectosigmoidectomy (Altemeier repair) is a safe and effective approach to the treatment of rectal prolapse and can be done as an outpatient procedure. From April 1994 to September 1998, a total of 66 laparoscopic cholecystectomies were performed at the same-day freestanding Surgicenter of the Yankton Medical Clinic. All patients (ages 15 to 62 years; 91% women) were discharged the same day, and no patient required hospitalization despite two conversions to open cholecystectomy. Cholangiofluoroscopies were completed in 70% of the patients. Pathologic evaluation showed chronic cholecystitis in all patients except one, who also had acute disease. PURPOSE: Diagnosis of indeterminate colitis, which is mainly based on histologic criteria, could represent either an interlocutory or a definite classification within inflammatory bowel diseases. A later evaluation could allow elimination of cases with transient attacks of colitis and the eventual change of diagnosis to that of ulcerative colitis (UC) or Crohn's disease of the colon in some other patients.

During a 27-month period, 222 patients with 227 anterior cruciate ligament-deficient knees underwent arthroscopically assisted reconstructions as outpatient procedures. From December 1987 through February 1991, outpatient arthroscopic procedures were done on patients experiencing recurrent dislocations of the patella. A modified Emslie-Trillat procedure was used. Twenty-four patients (27 knees) were available for follow-up. Using the criteria of Cox, excellent results were found in 78% (21 knees), whereas 18% (5 knees) were rated as good.
