[Cysts and fistulas of the first branchial cleft with parotid symptomatology].

On the basis of two cases, one a fistula and the other a cyst of the first brachial cleft with chiefly parotid manifestations, a review of the embryology is given which explains the anatomical features. The elements in their clinical diagnosis, complemented by fistulography and sialography are compared with operative findings, the essential steps in which are as follows: 1) Identification of the facial nerve which by necessity overlies the lesions. 2) Partial resection of the superficial lobe of the parotid. 3) The essential resection of the external auditory meatus, the keystone of radical cu

Disease and toxicity outcomes for a modern cohort of patients with squamous cell carcinoma of cutaneous origin involving the parotid gland: Comparison of volumetric modulated arc therapy and pencil beam scanning proton therapy.

OBJECTIVES: We sought to describe outcomes for locally advanced cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) involving the parotid treated with volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) versus pencil beam scanning proton beam therapy (PBT). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients were gathered from 2016 to 2022 from 5 sites of a large academic RT department; included patients were treated with RT and had parotid involvement by: direct extension of a cutaneous primary, parotid regional spread from a previously or contemporaneously resected but geographically separate cutaneous primary, or else primary paroti

Patterns of regional lymph node metastases from cutaneous melanomas of the head and neck.

A consecutive series of 111 patients treated between 1964 and 1989 with primary cutaneous malignant melanoma of the head and neck and histologically proven regional metastases was reviewed to determine the patterns of nodal metastases. The primary sites were grouped in the following categories: face (34), anterior scalp (25), anterior neck (16), posterior scalp (15), ear (11), and posterior neck (10). All patients underwent radical neck dissection: 80 of the procedures were therapeutic and 31 elective. A total of 106 specimens were positive for metastases. Thirty-three of the 57 patients under

Retrospective study of 124 cases of salivary gland tumors and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Salivary gland tumors are a rare and morphologically diverse group of lesions and their frequency is still unknown in several parts of the world. The knowledge of its population characteristics contributes to a better understanding of its etiopathogenesis. Objectives: This study investigated the frequency of salivary gland tumors in a region of southern Brazil and compared these data in a literature review. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted of salivary gland tumors diagnosed at two pathology centers from 1995 to 2016. Patient age and gender, tumor site and

Histopathological diversity in parotidectomy materials in Turkish population: clinicopathologic analysis and demographic features of 136 cases in a tertiary care hospital.

BACKGROUND: Salivary gland tumours, which account for approximately 3% of head-neck cancers, are a heterogeneous group and thus it is difficult to identify their epidemiological characteristics. The aim of this study is to determine demographic features and histopathologic distribution of parotid neoplasms in a large sample from Turkey. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was conducted retrospectively on 136 parotidectomy materials from operations between May 2009-May 2013. Age, gender, tumor diameter, histopathological diagnosis and surgical margin status were recorded. RESULTS: The benign ca…

Lipomatous salivary gland tumors: a series of 31 cases spanning their morphologic spectrum with emphasis on sialolipoma and oncocytic lipoadenoma.

Lipomatous neoplasms of the salivary glands are rare. Their wide histologic spectrum has not been sufficiently studied. We collected 31 fat-containing salivary gland lesions excluding pleomorphic adenoma and myoepithelioma with lipometaplasia. There were 19 male and 12 female patients aged 7 to 89 years (mean, 53 y). Tumors originated in the parotid (n=29) and the submandibular (n=2) gland. On the basis of the proportion and distribution of adipose tissue and the epithelial type, tumors could be categorized into 3 main groups: ordinary lipoma (n=20) identical to soft tissue lipoma but located

[Ultrasonic diagnosis of the salivary glands].

Sonography of the salivary glands is a valuable diagnostic tool in acute and chronic sialadenitis, sialadenoses, lymphadenopathies and tumours lesions. A new examination technique is presented: ultrasound-guided fine needle biopsy. We report on our experience in 308 patients with parotid and in 47 patients with submaxillary gland diseases examined between 1982 and 1987. The diagnostic accuracy and limitations of sonography are discussed compared with sialography, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging.

Low Radiation Doses in Oncocytic Lesions of the Parotid Gland: A Double-edged Sword. A Comprehensive Review.

Oncocytic lesions represent a group of benign and potentially precancerous tumors characterized by the accumulation of oncocytes, which are large, granular, and eosinophilic cells. Diagnosing oncocytic lesions in the parotid gland typically involves a combination of imaging techniques, such as ultrasound, Computed Tomography (CT) scans, and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy with histopathological examination remains the primary diagnostic tool for these lesions. Accurate diagnosis is crucial for appropriate management decisions. Treatment options for oncocyt

Metastasis of spine from adenoid cystic carcinoma of the parotid gland: two case reports.

BACKGROUND: Spinal metastasis from adenoid cystic carcinoma of the salivary gland is extremely rare. We present two interesting cases of spinal metastasis from adenoid cystic carcinoma of the parotid gland. A 29-year-old Persian male and a 48-year-old Persian female presented with parotid gland mass. The two patients received parotidectomy and radiotherapy. The pathological examination result was adenoid cystic carcinoma. Because of intractable back pain, patients were referred to the hospital after 7 years and 9 months, respectively. Both cases underwent spinal surgery. Histopathology confirm

Surgical resection of clinically benign tumours in the maxillomandibular deep lobe of the parotid gland via sternocleidomastoid muscle-parotid space approach.

This article reports the surgical resection of clinically benign tumours in the maxillomandibular deep lobe of the parotid gland via sternocleidomastoid muscle-parotid space (SPS) approach. The use of maxillary-mandibular planes to subdivide the deep lobe of the parotid gland in order to establish the tumour location and accessibility is introduced. This approach, which does not raise a skin flap, may preserve the superficial lobe. Ten patients with clinically benign tumours in the maxillomandibular deep lobe of the parotid gland were treated via the SPS approach. The patients were followed up

Is extracapsular dissection for pleomorphic adenoma rather a euphemism for enucleation that jeopardises the intactness of the capsule?

The aim of this study was to compare several surgical modalities with respect to the incidence of positive margins and focal capsular exposure of pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid gland. The clinical records and histopathological findings of all patients who underwent parotidectomy for pleomorphic adenoma between 2006 and 2020 were retrospectively evaluated (n = 845). The lesion was removed by extracapsular dissection in 577 cases (68%) and facial nerve dissection in 268 (32%). Our analysis did not reveal a statistically significant difference between the examined modalities regarding positiv

Secondary malignant tumors of the parotid gland: not a secondary problem!

PURPOSE: To present the clinical features of patients with parotid gland metastasis, and compare the results with previously published series. Most of the relevant literature arises from case reports, while there are only few series reported, as secondary neoplastic lesions of the parotid gland are uncommon. METHODS: The medical records of patients with parotid gland metastasis, treated at the ENT Department of the University Hospital of Ferrara, between January 1st 1965 and December 31th 2014, were retrospectively reviewed. Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) and biopsy results were compa
