Effects of product visual design consistency on brand recognition and state anxiety: a psychophysiological study integrating heart rate variability and self-report measures.

BACKGROUND: Product visual design consistency is regarded as an important characteristic of product family design and brand identity. In industrial design, it is understood as the overall coherence of multiple visual attributes across products within a product family. Although such coherence has been suggested to facilitate information processing and product recognition, its potential psychophysiological associations with consumer responses remain insufficiently understood. As an exploratory investigation, this study aims to provide preliminary evidence of the psychophysiological correlates of

Screening for symptoms of depression and anxiety in a cardiology department.

BACKGROUND: Depression and anxiety are common in patients with cardiac disease and predict a poorer prognosis, increased mortality and reduced compliance with treatment. National and international guidelines recommend procedures for screening, but there is a lack of studies of such practices in Norwegian hospitals. The objective of this study was to implement a simple screening method for symptoms of depression and anxiety in patients with cardiac disease. MATERIAL AND METHOD: Patients in the Department of Cardiology at Diakonhjemmet Hospital who had valvular heart disease, tachyarrhythmia, m

Women using hormonal contraceptives show increased valence ratings and memory performance for emotional information.

Perception of emotional valence and emotional memory performance vary across the menstrual cycle. However, the consequences of altered ovarian hormone levels due to the intake of hormonal contraceptives on these emotional and cognitive processes remain to be established. In the present study, which included 2169 healthy young females, we show that hormonal contraceptives (HC) users rated emotional pictures as more emotional than HC-non-users and outperformed non-users in terms of better memory recall of emotional pictures. The observed association between HC-status and memory performance was p

Post-event processing in children with social phobia.

In the aftermath of a distressing social event, adults with social phobia (SP) engage in a review of this event with a focus on its negative aspects. To date, little is known about this post-event processing (PEP) and its relationship with perceived performance in SP children. We measured PEP in SP children (n=24) and healthy controls (HC; n=22), aged from 8 to 12 years, after the Trier Social Stress Test for Children (TSST-C). Children also rated their performance immediately after the TSST-C and 2.5 h later. SP children reported more negative and less positive PEP than controls. Regression a

Does the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) identify antenatal depression and antenatal anxiety disorders? A validation study in Singapore.

OBJECTIVE: Research on the usage of the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) to detect common antenatal mental disorders in pregnant women attending outpatient clinics in Singapore is limited. This study aimed to investigate the psychometric properties of the EPDS in screening for antenatal depression (AND) and anxiety disorders. METHOD: 250 pregnant women from two national public obstetric clinics were included. The EPDS and EPDS-3A were validated against the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI) by analyzing key parameters at different cutoffs and obtaining the receive

GABAA Receptor Density Is Not Altered by a Novel Herbal Anxiolytic Treatment.

Anxiety disorders are highly prevalent and considered a major public health concern worldwide. Current anxiolytics are of limited efficacy and associated with various side effects. Our novel herbal treatment (NHT), composed of four constituents, was shown to reduce anxiety-like behavior while precluding a common side effect caused by current anxiolytics, i.e., sexual dysfunction. Nevertheless, NHT's mechanism of action is yet to be determined. There is evidence that some medicinal herbs interact with the GABAergic system. Therefore, we aimed to examine whether NHT's anxiolytic-like effect is e

Training working memory to improve attentional control in anxiety: A proof-of-principle study using behavioral and electrophysiological measures.

Trait anxiety is associated with impairments in attentional control and processing efficiency (see Berggren & Derakshan, 2013, for a review). Working memory training using the adaptive dual n-back task has shown to improve attentional control in subclinical depression with transfer effects at the behavioral and neural level on a working memory task (Owens, Koster, & Derakshan, 2013). Here, we examined the beneficial effects of working memory training on attentional control in pre-selected high trait anxious individuals who underwent a three week daily training intervention using the adaptive d

Negative Affective Traits Moderate Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation Effects on Memory.

BACKGROUND: The cognitive effects of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) show substantial interindividual variability, emphasizing the need to identify moderators of responsiveness, with negative affectivity as a potential factor influencing both cognitive performance and tDCS outcomes. Here, we examine whether and how negative affectivity (depressiveness, anxiety, and stress level), conceptualized as both transient states and stable traits, moderates the effects of tDCS on working memory (WM) and associative memory (AM). METHODS: We pooled data from 6 sham-controlled experiments i

Work conflict: Another trigger to smartphone addiction of individuals with high rumination?

With the widespread use of smartphones, many people spend much time on smartphones for shopping, learning, socializing, and so on, which can affect an individual's mental health and work performance. Especially, individual perceived conflict at work may increase their social anxiety and thus raise the risk of their smartphone addiction. This study collected data from 577 corporate employees in China through convenience sampling to explain the influence mechanism of work conflict on smartphone addiction and to verify the moderating role of rumination. Statistical results show that relationship

Emotional disorder syndrome after cosmetic facial injection.

There are a number of patients who develop severe anxiety or depression after receiving facial cosmetic injections. We presented a 32-year-old woman who developed frequent panic, tension headache, tachycardia, shortness of breath, and sleep disorder for a year after the injection of hyaluronic acid on her forehead and glabella. Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed multiple flaky and slightly longer T1, slightly longer T2 signals on the anterior frontal white matter. However, the patient's brain MRI scan 5 months before the injection showed no such performance. The patient was asked to

The structure of feared social situations among race-ethnic minorities and Whites with social anxiety disorder in the United States.

We investigated feared social situations in individuals with social anxiety disorder from different racial and ethnic groups in the United States. The sample included 247 African Americans, 158 Latinos, and 533 non-Latino Whites diagnosed with social anxiety disorder within the past 12 months from the integrated Collaborative Psychiatric Epidemiology Studies data set. After randomly splitting the full sample, we conducted an exploratory factor analysis with half of the sample to determine the structure of feared social situations in a more diverse sample than has been used in previous studies.

Current status of beta-blocking drugs in the treatment of anxiety disorders.

beta-Adrenoceptor blocking drugs have been used for the treatment of acute stress reactions, adjustment disorders, generalised anxiety, panic disorder and agoraphobia. In general they are effective in these disorders if somatic or autonomic symptoms are prominent but not extreme in degree. Thus, they are of more value for the relatively mild tremor of the anxious violinist in public performance than in the severe shaking noticed during a panic attack. It is most likely that beta-blockers act primarily by blocking peripheral adrenergic beta-receptors; symptoms that are mediated through beta-sti

The Scottish police caution: do individuals with intellectual disabilities understand a verbally presented police caution, and can comprehension be improved?

This study considers comprehension of the Scottish police caution amongst people with an intellectual disability (n = 30). It applies techniques to the caution that are suggested to increase its 'listenability', to examine whether this could be a successful method of improving understanding. These techniques include providing instructions, further explanations and listing information. Half of the participants were assessed using the original version and half the modified version. Participants were assessed using an abbreviated IQ assessment, a measure of working memory and measure of state anx
