Sensitive and vulnerable periods in the development of the visual system.

In advanced mammals the visual system consists of a number of parallel channels for the efficient processing of different aspects of the visual scene. Much of the basic anatomical structure of the visual pathway is constructed before birth. A wave of maturation sweeps through the system, from the eye to the visual cortex, the correct formation of connections depending on precisely timed interactions between axons and their targets. Competition between growing axons (apparently dependent on spontaneous impulse activity in those axons), cell death (partly influenced by competition between those

[Postoperative hypoparathyroidism: Direct para-operative period].

Surgical hypoparathyroidism is a severe complication of the operations on thyroid gland. Hundred thirty patients aged between 17 and 77 years have been analysed clinically. Group I involved 45 patients with surgical hypoparathyroidism of transient or partial character, group II involved 85 patients with severe irreversible surgical hypoparathyroidism. Hypocalcemia in postoperative period was significantly higher in group II than that in group I (p < 0.02), and negatively correlated with the maximal dose of vitamin D3 necessary to compensate calcemia (r = -0.42). Follow-up results indicate that

[Differential diagnosis of periventricular pseudocysts in the neonatal period].

Periventricular pseudocysts are important sequelae of different noxious insults in the developing brain. Accurate diagnosis of those pathologic entities during early life has therefore become of direct concern to the clinician. When present at birth, they suggest an intrauterine pathology. It has only been with the advent of real-time cranial ultrasonography that subependymal cystic lesions can be detected antemortem. 25 infants were postnatal diagnosed in ultrasound as having periventricular cystic lesions. They belonged to different pathological entities: focal paraventricular pseudocysts (5

[The clinical picture of the initial period of intestinal amebiasis].

Clinical symptoms of the initial stage of the disease (before the onset of pathognomonic signs of amoebiasis--the formation of ulcers in the colon) have been analysed in 287 patients with intestinal amoebiasis (IA). The following variants of the clinical pattern have been identified: slow-progressing IA (59.2% of the patients examined) and fast-progressing IA (40.8% of the patients examined). In 5 patients with body eight deficit and clinical manifestations of vitamin C and B deficiency the disease assumed a fulminant course. The patients' condition was considered severe or very severe already

The human rhombencephalon at the end of the embryonic period proper.

The human rhombencephalon at 8 postovulatory weeks (stage 23) is described and illustrated for the first time with the aid of silver-impregnated sections and graphic reconstructions. The motor and sensory trigeminal nuclei were among those studied, and the latter was found to be almost contiguous to the dentate nucleus. Fibers to the principal sensory nucleus join the mesencephalic trigeminal tract, which also seems to be connected with the motor fibers. Fine fibers from the sensory root join the tractus solitarius, which appears to receive connections from the facial, glossopharyngeal, and va

Computer detection and analysis of periodic movements in sleep.

Standard polysomnography (PSG) and electromyographic (EMG) recording of the right and left anterior tibial muscles by Medilog 9000 recorder was carried out in 10 patients with periodic movements in sleep (PMS). The analog EMG signals and the sleep data from the Oxford ss90III sleep stager were fed into an IBM compatible personal computer for automatic detection and analysis using specific criteria to define the leg events, the interevent interval, the number of epochs (greater than 30 jerks), and the number of bursts (4 to 29 jerks). The results of automatic analysis were compared with data ob

Restless legs syndrome and periodic movements of sleep.

Two entities of special interest in sleep disorders medicine are restless legs syndrome and periodic movements of sleep. Most patients with restless legs syndrome have periodic movements of sleep, but most patients with the nocturnal disorder do not have restless legs when awake. In both conditions, the underlying cause is obscure, and the frequency of occurrence increases with advancing age. In most patients with restless legs syndrome, the results of complete blood cell counts and iron, ferritin, folate, and vitamin B12 levels are normal. No hematologic or chemical abnormalities have been re

[Midfacial and mandibular fractures during the growth period].

This study investigated the occurrence of primary and secondary complications following conservative versus surgical intervention in the treatment of midface and lower jaw fractures. Follow-up studies were undertaken on 81 patients who had been admitted to the above clinic with such fractures during their adolescence. It was found that more complications developed after surgical intervention.

[Central anticholinergic syndrome during postoperative period].

The central anticholinergic syndrome (CAS) includes central signs (somnolence, confusion, amnesia, agitation, hallucinations, dysarthria, ataxia, delirium, stupor, coma) and peripheral signs (dry mouth, dry skin, tachycardia, visual disturbances and difficulty in micturition). It occurs when central cholinergic sites are occupied by specific drugs and also as a result of an insufficient release of acetylcholine. The CAS can be caused by atropine sulphate, hyoscine (scopolamine), promethazine, benzodiazepines, opioids, halothane, influrane, ketamine. The incidence of CAS during the postoperativ

[Pharmacokinetic and clinical studies on aztreonam in the perinatal period].

Pharmacokinetic and clinical studies of aztreonam (AZT) in perinatal infections in the field of obstetrics and gynecology were performed with the following results. 1. At one shot intravenous injection, 1 g AZT showed rapid distribution to the umbilical-cord serum with concentrations higher than 15 micrograms/ml in 1 hour 36 minutes after injection and higher 10 micrograms/ml even in 4 hours 30 minutes after injection. Significant difference in concentrations was not observed between arterial serum sample and venous serum sample of the umbilical-cord in a single subject. The concentration in t

Pneumatosis intestinalis in children beyond the neonatal period.

Pneumatosis intestinalis (PI) is a well-recognized manifestation of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) in the newborn--a condition that often requires surgical intervention for infarcted bowel. However, little information is available concerning PI in older children or its management. Sixteen older infants and children (greater than 2 months) had x-ray findings of PI (intramural air). There were eight girls and eight boys ranging in age from 2 months to 8 years. Associated conditions included short bowel syndrome (SBS) (8), congenital heart disease (2), iron ingestion (1), nesidioblastosis (1), h

[Case report of periodontal disease with periodic neutropenia].

A case of periodic neutropenia with specific symptoms of gingiva and alveolar bone loss in primary dentition is reported. The patient was a boy, and it was followed between the ages of 3- and 9 years-old. At the period of neutropenia he was suffered from recurrent redness, swelling and bleeding of the gingiva, and also with cold-like symptoms with fever. Although the cause of these symptoms was not definite at first, even in medical exploration, we could diagnose this disease as periodic neutropenia by the process of dental therapy. By alveolar bone resorption, pocket formation and severe toot
