The authors applied cluster analysis and multidimensional scaling to the analyses of 59 patients with personality pathology. Cluster analysis yielded eight typologies of patients: detached, anankastic, phobic, dramatic, erratic, emotional, milder emotional, and masochistic negativistic. Multidimensional scaling identified the dimensions of classifying patients: anxious rumination versus behavioural acting out, overall severity of personality pathology, and assertiveness versus withdrawal. Considering the distinction between personality disorder (dysfunctional personality) and abnormal personal

AIM: The aim of this study is to describe the most frequent NANDA-I nursing diagnoses, NOC outcomes, and NIC interventions used in nursing care plans in relation to psychiatric diagnosis.
BACKGROUND: Although numerous studies have described the most prevalent NANDA-I, NIC and NOC labels in association with medical diagnosis in different specialties, only few connect these with psychiatric diagnoses.
METHODS: This multicentric cross-sectional study was developed in Spain. Data were collected retrospectively from the electronic records of 690 psychiatric or psychogeriatric patients in long and

Approximately 50% of patients with psychiatric disorders do not fully adhere to the prescribed psychopharmacological therapy, significantly impacting the progression of the disorder and the patient's quality of life. The present study aimed to assess potential differences in terms of rates and clinical features of treatment adherence in a large cohort of psychiatric patients with different diagnoses attending various psychiatric services. The study included 307 psychiatric patients diagnosed with a primary major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorder, schizophrenic spectrum di

Hair pulling disorder (HPD; trichotillomania) and skin picking disorder (SPD; excoriation disorder) are understudied psychiatric disorders. The aim of this study was to examine the prevalence and correlates of HPD and SPD in an acute psychiatric sample. Semistructured interviews and self-report measures were administered to patients in a psychiatric partial hospital (N = 599). The past-month prevalence of HPD and SPD was 2.3% and 9%, respectively. HPD and SPD had highly similar clinical characteristics and a strong co-occurrence. Patients with HPD/SPD were significantly younger than other pati

Psychiatric disorders impose significant personal, social, and financial costs for individuals, families, and the nation. Despite a large amount of research and several journals focused on psychiatric conditions, there is a paucity of research on psychiatric disorders among Black Americans (i.e., African Americans and Black Caribbeans), particularly older Black Americans. The present literature review examines research on psychiatric disorders among older Black Americans and provides a broad overview of research findings that are based on nationally representative studies. Collectively, this r

The objective of the study is to assess the relationships between personality traits, lifetime psychosocial functioning, and crime scene behavior. Thirty-five male offenders referred for forensic psychiatric assessment in Sweden (1996-2001) and assigned a main diagnosis of either antisocial personality disorder (APD) or autism spectrum disorder (AUT) were retrospectively studied. APD were subcategorized into impulsive (APDi) and controlled (APDc). Those in the AUT group were less intoxicated at the time of the crime and did not often use knives or guns compared to the APD group. Males in the A

Twelve lifelong nightmare sufferers, 12 vivid dreamers who had no nightmares, and 12 persons who had neither nightmares nor vivid dreams were studied in a series of structured interviews, psychological tests, and other tests. The group with nightmares had significantly higher scores on the "psychotic" side of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory profile than the other two groups, scored higher on a "boundary deficit" score of the Rorschach test, and had more first- and second-degree relatives with nightmares, psychological problems, and psychiatric hospitalization. There were no sig

Mental health disorders are common in the United States and may cause significant disturbances in all aspects of a person's life. Individuals with mental health disorders often present to emergency departments for health care. Recognizing and managing common psychiatric emergencies may be challenging for non-mental health providers. The Diagnostic Statistical Manual-5 diagnostic criteria will be discussed and reviewed for panic attack and panic disorder. Both pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic treatment strategies will also be addressed. Adverse drug reactions associated with antipsychotics an

Mental disorders represent an important source of morbidity among U.S. military personnel and are a common reason for early separation from the military. The objective of this study was to identify factors predictive of hospitalization for mental health disorders in a large sample of enlisted Navy personnel. Demographic variables and a variety of psychosocial variables assessed on the Sailors' Health Inventory Program questionnaire were studied as predictors of psychiatric hospitalization. Three psychiatric categories were examined: adjustment reaction, personality disorder, and all other ment

We examined the onsets of comorbid psychiatric disorders in patients with panic disorder (PD) (N = 54). In 42 patients (77.8%), PD was preceded by another psychiatric condition (secondary PD group), while in 12 patients (22.2%), PD occurred first or was the only diagnosed mental disorder (primary PD group). Patients with primary and secondary PD did not differ with respect to demographic variables, mean ages of onset of PD, mean duration of PD, number of patients with a personality disorder, and number of patients with different DSM-III-R subtypes of PD. Except for the anger and sleep scales o

OBJECTIVE: The authors sought to determine whether personality disorders diagnosed during a depressive episode have long-term outcomes more typical of those of other patients with personality disorders or those of patients with noncomorbid major depression.
METHOD: The authors used 6-year outcome data collected from the multisite Collaborative Longitudinal Personality Disorders Study (CLPS). Diagnoses and personality measures gathered from the study cohort at the index assessment using interview and self-report methods were associated with symptomatic, functional, and personality measures at

BACKGROUND: Recurrent Emergency Department (ED) visits for non-cardiac chest pain are common among postpartum women. When cardiac workups are repeatedly normal, psychiatric etiologies, particularly trauma-related personality disorders, should be considered. Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) may present with panic-like somatic symptoms during periods of interpersonal stress but is often underrecognized in acute care settings.
CASE-PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 29-year-old postpartum woman who presented to the ED five times over two months with episodic chest pain, palpitations, and

BACKGROUND: Antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) is the only DSM personality disorder that requires a diagnosis of conduct disorder (CD) during childhood. Previous research comparing adults diagnosed with ASPD with adults who meet all ASPD criteria except for a history of CD (referred to in this study as adult antisocial syndrome [AAS]) have reported mixed results. This study sought to clarify the differences among adults with ASPD, adults with AAS, and a large psychiatric outpatient control group.
METHODS: A series of semi-structured interviews were conducted with 2,691 psychiatric outpati
