The relative efficacy and efficiency of single- and multi-session exposure therapies for specific phobia: A meta-analysis.

Exposure therapy is the preferred treatment for specific phobia (SP), with evidence supporting its efficacy whether delivered over multiple sessions or as a single session, such as One-Session Treatment. In this meta-analysis, we compared the efficiency and effectiveness of single- and multi-session exposure for SP. PsycINFO, Embase, MEDLINE, and Cochrane were systematically searched for peer-reviewed articles reporting the effects of multi-session (k = 30) and/or single-session (k = 55) in vivo exposure on SP symptoms in clinical populations (n = 1758 participants). A random-effects model was

[Are VR headsets effective in reducing dental anxiety?].

The gold standard for the treatment of a specific phobia is cognitive behavioural therapy in the form of exposure. The latest form of this treatment is virtual reality (VR) exposure therapy. During this therapy, an individual is confronted virtually with the stimulus he or she fears instead of in vivo. Research has demonstrated virtual reality exposure therapy is an effective treatment method for treating anxiety disorder, social anxiety, fear of flying, vertigo, arachnophobia and post-traumatic stress disorder. On account of the positive results in treating phobia with virtual reality exposur

Using convolutional neural networks to decode EEG-based functional brain network with different severity of acrophobia.

Objective. The prevalence of acrophobia is high, especially with the rise of many high-rise buildings. In the recent few years, researchers have begun to analyze acrophobia from the neuroscience perspective, especially to improve the virtual reality exposure therapy (VRET). Electroencephalographic (EEG) is an informative neuroimaging technique, but it is rarely used for acrophobia. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of using EEGs to identify the degree of acrophobia objectively.Approach.EEG data were collected by virtual reality (VR) exposure experiments. We classified a

Children's sleepiness facilitates the effect of vicarious learning on the development of fear.

A substantial body of research demonstrates the importance of sleep for emotional processing and learning as well as the association between sleep problems and heightened anxiety. However, there is currently no research exploring the impact of sleepiness on vicariously learned fear responses. Experiment 1 (N = 38) first demonstrated no effect of trait or state sleepiness on children's (7-11 years of age) subjective ratings of fear. Experiment 2 (N = 42) and Experiment 3 (N = 46) used an established vicarious learning paradigm to demonstrate that trait sleepiness facilitated vicariously acquire

Better safe than wealthy: Dysfunctional risk avoidance in spider-fearful individuals.

Previous research has documented that fearful individuals avoid fear-relevant cues even if they incur costs in doing so. Paradigms that were previously used to study avoidance in the lab, manipulated reward contingencies in favor of selecting either fear-relevant or neutral cues, e.g., spiders versus butterflies. We, thus, developed a paradigm where the chance of monetary gains was linked with increasing probability of a fear-relevant or a neutral outcome. To this end, we modified the well-established Balloon Analogue Risk Task (BART) to include fear-relevant outcomes. Individuals with and wit

Nomophobia and the influence of time to REST among nursing students. A descriptive, correlational and predictive research.

The inclusion of the smartphone in society has brought many advantages, but also disadvantages, such as nomophobia, considered as a digital disease generated by the excessive use of the smartphone. The general objective of the research is to know and analyse the prevalence of nomophobia among nursing students and knowing the influence of time to rest. The research design is descriptive, correlational, transversal and predictive with a quantitative research methodology. The sample consist of nursing students from the University of Granada (N = 880) in Spain. A descriptive analysis has been carr

Uncertainty in Faith, Fear of Death? Transitions in Religious Doubt and Death Anxiety in Later Life.

While religiosity is usually associated with lower death anxiety, holding doubts about one's faith are associated with higher death anxiety. Using longitudinal data from the Religion, Aging, and Health Study (2001-2004), this study examines within-individual changes in religious doubt and death anxiety. Results from lagged dependent variable models suggest that compared to older adults who did not experience any doubt about their faith, those holding consistently high doubt or increasing or decreasing doubt reported greater death anxiety. Lingering religious doubt was associated with higher de

Spider bites in France: Epidaemiology of cases occurring in 10 years in metropolitan France.

Spiders are often wrongly designated as responsible for cutaneous eruptions. We aim to describe spider bites and the spider species implicated in metropolitan France. A retrospective observational study was conducted for all reported cases of spider bites from 2007 to 2018 extracted from the French Poison Control Centers (PCCs) information system, after exclusion of non-native spiders. We described identification of the spider, level of certainty of the bite, symptoms and severity of cases. 1194 cases of spider bites met the inclusion criteria. The average age of the patients was 36.9 ± 19.8 y

Real-life contextualization of exposure therapy using augmented reality: A pilot clinical trial of a novel treatment method.

BACKGROUND: Phobias, including arachnophobia, are common and can be treated with exposure therapy, a method that is limited by a lack of feared objects/situations in clinical settings. METHODS: In a pilot parallel randomized controlled trial (RCT) to test the feasibility and efficacy of augmented reality exposure therapy (ARET), 25 men and women ages 18 to 45 with arachnophobia were designated (ABAB block allocation) to ARET for arachnophobia (n = 13) or waitlist control (n = 12). Data were collected at baseline, 1-week, and 1-month follow-up, and single-session ARET occurred immediately foll

No differences in return of pain-related fear after extinction and counterconditioning.

Extinction-based protocols such as exposure-in-vivo successfully reduce pain-related fear in chronic pain conditions, but return of fear and clinical relapse often occur. Counterconditioning is assumed to attenuate return of fear, likely through changing the negative affective valence of the conditioned stimulus (CS). We hypothesized that counterconditioning would outperform extinction in mitigating return of pain-related fear and decrease CS negative affective valence. Healthy participants performed a conditioning task, in which 2 joystick movements (CSs+) were paired with a painful electrocu

Human evaluation of amphibian species: a comparison of disgust and beauty.

Animals can evoke a wide range of emotions helping us to choose a quick and appropriate reaction towards them: approach or avoidance in general. This work has focused on disgust evoked by amphibians in humans as well as perceived beauty. Due to the high morphological variability of recent amphibian taxa, we examined humans' cognitive categorisation of 101 amphibian photos and the effect of stimuli characteristics on disgust evaluation or beauty perception of individual groups/species. We also explored how respondents' characteristics, e.g. gender, age and disgust sensitivity (DS-R) influence t

Exposure-based Interventions for the management of individuals with high levels of needle fear across the lifespan: a clinical practice guideline and call for further research.

Needle fear typically begins in childhood and represents an important health-related issue across the lifespan. Individuals who are highly fearful of needles frequently avoid health care. Although guidance exists for managing needle pain and fear during procedures, the most highly fearful may refuse or abstain from such procedures. The purpose of a clinical practice guideline (CPG) is to provide actionable instruction on the management of a particular health concern; this guidance emerges from a systematic process. Using evidence from a rigorous systematic review interpreted by an expert panel
