Categorization and Analysis of Nasal Base Shapes Using a Parametric Model.

IMPORTANCE: Nasal base view is important for rhinoplasty analysis. Although some descriptors of nasal base shape exist, they are largely subjective and qualitative. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate a parametric model of nasal base shape and compare it with categorization by surgeons to create an objective classification system for clinical evaluation and communication. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Retrospective cohort review of deidentified photographs of 420 patients evaluated for possible facial plastic surgery at a tertiary care academic medical center between January 2013 and June 2017. The

Digital Images in Academic Plastic Surgery: A Novel and Secure Methodology for Use in Clinical Practice and Research.

BACKGROUND: Digital photographs have become an integral part in plastic and reconstructive surgery. They are significant in clinical research and outcome evaluation. There is a need for effective and secure methods to store, search, and retrieve those photographs. We developed a Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act compliant searchable database to archive and index clinical information for clinical and research purposes. METHODS: At our craniofacial clinic, digital media (2-D, 3-D, and 4-D photographs) are obtained on a regular basis to evaluate and document treatment outcomes.

Impact of Camera Deviation on Penile Curvature Assessment Using 2D Pictures.

BACKGROUND: An accurate curvature assessment (CA) is required in the decision-making process for patients with Peyronie's disease. In-office CA following induced erection is the gold standard for CA, although penile photography is commonly used due to its convenience. Camera deviations during 2D image acquisition might affect CA accuracy. AIM: To investigate the impact of camera angle deviations on CA. METHODS: 2D pictures were taken from 5 models with a known uniplanar curvature (40°, 45°, 60°, 90°, and 120°). The model was kept on a fixed point and the camera was rotated around it. Picture…

Osteotomies Demystified.

Osteotomies are critical techniques in rhinoplasty. There are a variety of approaches, trajectories, and tools used with no widely standardized classification or nomenclature. Percutaneous osteotomies are gaining in popularity, and picture framing the nasomaxillary bone is crucial for predictable fracture and reproducible results. This is best accomplished with medial, lateral, and transverse osteotomies. Intermediate osteotomies are used less frequently, but provide more mobility. With a detailed understanding of anatomy and a thorough approach to nasal osteotomies, the contour and function o

Eyelid and Periorbital Soft Tissue Trauma.

Facial trauma often involves injuries to the eyelid and periorbital region. Management of these injuries can be challenging due to the involvement of multiple complex anatomic structures that are in close proximity. Restoration of normal anatomic relationships of the eyelids and periocular structures is essential for optimum functional and aesthetic outcome after trauma. This review provides an overview of the current literature involving soft tissue trauma of the eyelid and periorbital tissue, and highlights key steps in patient evaluation and management with various types of injuries.

Evaluating the submission of digital images as a method of surveillance for Ixodes scapularis ticks.

Widespread access to the internet is offering new possibilities for data collection in surveillance. We explore, in this study, the possibility of using an electronic tool to monitor occurrence of the tick vector of Lyme disease, Ixodes scapularis. The study aimed to compare the capacity for ticks to be identified in web-based submissions of digital images/photographs, to the traditional specimen-based identification method used by the provincial public health laboratory in Quebec, Canada. Forty-one veterinary clinics participated in the study by submitting digital images of ticks collected fr

Study on the criteria for assessing skull-face correspondence in craniofacial superimposition.

Craniofacial superimposition has the potential to be used as an identification method when other traditional biological techniques are not applicable due to insufficient quality or absence of ante-mortem and post-mortem data. Despite having been used in many countries as a method of inclusion and exclusion for over a century it lacks standards. Thus, the purpose of this research is to provide forensic practitioners with standard criteria for analysing skull-face relationships. Thirty-seven experts from 16 different institutions participated in this study, which consisted of evaluating 65 crite

A standardized nomenclature for craniofacial and facial anthropometry.

Standardized terms and methods have long been recognized as crucial to reduce measurement error and increase reliability in anthropometry. The successful prior use of craniometric landmarks makes extrapolation of these landmarks to the soft tissue context, as analogs, intuitive for forensic craniofacial analyses and facial photogrammetry. However, this extrapolation has not, so far, been systematic. Instead, varied nomenclature and definitions exist for facial landmarks, and photographic analyses are complicated by the generalization of 3D craniometric landmarks to the 2D face space where anal

Reliable scar scoring system to assess photographs of burn patients.

BACKGROUND: Several scar-scoring scales exist to clinically monitor burn scar development and maturation. Although scoring scars through direct clinical examination is ideal, scars must sometimes be scored from photographs. No scar scale currently exists for the latter purpose. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We modified a previously described scar scale (Yeong et al., J Burn Care Rehabil 1997) and tested the reliability of this new scale in assessing burn scars from photographs. The new scale consisted of three parameters as follows: scar height, surface appearance, and color mismatch. Each parameter

Telemedicine for retinopathy of prematurity.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To examine and review digital retinal imaging via telemedicine as an important screening and diagnostic tool in the management of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). RECENT FINDINGS: The use of wide-angle digital retinal photography to detect clinically significant ROP has been described in numerous reports since 2000. Comparisons with the gold standard of binocular indirect ophthalmoscopy have been favorable. Digital image capture can provide more objective information for disease detection, thereby facilitating internet consultation and retrospective analysis as part of the…

Scheimpflug photographic diagnosis of pellucid marginal degeneration.

PURPOSE: We present a case of advanced bilateral pellucid marginal degeneration (PMD) with unilateral hydrops to show the unique properties of Scheimpflug imaging and its ability to display the clinical and topographic findings of PMD not seen on traditional placido-based topography. METHODS: Case report and literature review. RESULTS: A 51-year-old man was referred with a presumptive diagnosis of bilateral keratoconus with unilateral hydrops. Complete topographic evaluation showed a band of inferior thinning adjacent to the limbus and a Scheimpflug cross-sectional image consistent with PMD.
