The reliability and validity of the pilot National Board Dental Examination were examined. The results indicate that the pilot examination is a reliable test that assesses a full range of cognitive behaviors. Furthermore, the findings indicate that the pilot examination is a unidimensional test of comprehensive general dentistry. The performance of examinees on the pilot examination was found to be similar to their performance on the traditional Part II examination. The aim of the current study was to determine how carriers of a recessive gene, which confers no risk to their own health, perceive their health, relative to non-carriers. Fifteen patients with progressive primary malignant or metastatic brain tumors were treated on a clinical and pharmacokinetic study with intracarotid cisplatin and bleomycin. Toxicity was tolerable and consisted mainly of nausea and vomiting. Neurologic toxicity included focal seizures (1), leukoencephalopathy (1), and motor weakness (1). This study finds evidence for 24-h carry-over effects of a moderate social dose of marijuana on a piloting task. In separate sessions, nine currently active pilots smoked one cigarette containing 20 mg of delta 9 THC and one Placebo cigarette. Using an aircraft simulator, pilots flew just before smoking, and 0.25, 4, 8, 24, and 48 h after smoking. Marijuana impaired performance at 0.25, 4, 8, and 24 h after smoking. Nine patients with mild Tourette's syndrome completed a cross-over, placebo-controlled study of clonidine administered transdermally. Although the subjects showed no improvement on objective measures of symptom severity, most subjects felt they had improved. Seven subjects chose to continue taking clonidine. Larger, blinded studies of transdermal clonidine are indicated.

Four consultant rheumatologists from different health districts compared their out-patient and in-patient workloads for 3 months. Data collection proved simple and valuable to each local unit. Inflammatory joint disease (particularly severe rheumatoid arthritis) dominated the workload in all centres. Large differences in the number of new referrals with osteoarthritis, soft tissue diseases and polymyalgia rheumatica were observed. Differences were also apparent in the organization of clinics, provision of follow-up appointments for different diagnostic groups, and usage of steroid injections.

A pilot study was undertaken to investigate the use of a mailed questionnaire to estimate the prevalence and incidence of infertility in a population, and the demand for medical advice about infertility. The objectives were to investigate the response rate, the acceptability and comprehensibility of the questionnaire, and to provide initial results. We compared ambulation with oxytocin in the treatment of protracted labour with a randomized, controlled trial of 57 patients. Two subjects currently undergoing covert sensitization treatment were asked to imagine alternately the covert scene and a pleasant imagery scene while EMGs from the corrugator and forearm extensor muscle sites were continuously monitored. Visual inspection of the data suggests that corrugator EMG can reliably discriminate the covert-sensitization scene from the pleasant imagery and from resting baseline conditions. Facial EMG may have potential for objectively studying imagery and its role in covert sensitization and other imagery-based treatments.

Some previous reports have suggested that lithium treatment is of benefit to women with the premenstrual tension syndrome (PMTS). In this study 15 women carefully selected for severe PMTS were given lithium carbonate (600-900 mg/day) continuously for three menstrual cycles. Lithium did not affect physical premenstrual symptoms and was ineffective in most women against behavioral premenstrual symptoms.
