An association between phlebotomine sandflies and aphids in the Peruvian Andes.

As the composition of natural sugars in the diet of adult sandflies (Diptera: Psychodidae: Phlebotominae) may affect the development of Leishmania (Kinetoplastida: Trypanosomatidae) in sandfly guts, and so play an important role in the epidemiology of leishmaniasis, there is increasing interest in the sources of sugars for wild sandflies. Advanced chromatography techniques have provided indirect evidence that wild sandflies feed on honeydew, a substance released by aphids (Hemiptera: Aphididae) when feeding. Our objective was to determine whether sandfly density can be influenced directly by t

Effect of deltamethrin spraying on the sandfly populations in a focus of American cutaneous leishmaniasis.

The effect of deltamethrin of the sandfly population in a focus of American Cutaneous Leishmaniasis in Viana, Espírito Santo State is described. The phlebotomine population density was determined inside and outside houses during a one year period in a treated and untreated area. The results showed a significant reduction in the number of sandflies inside houses in the treated area compared with both the untreated area and the same area before spraying. Despite having a residual action for 12 months after spraying the insecticide was ineffective outside houses. It is concluded therefore that de…

Quantitative studies of onchocerciasis transmission by Simulium yahense and Simulium sanctipauli in the Firestone Rubber Plantation at Harbel, Liberia.

Black fly vectors of onchocerciasis from three ecologically different Simuliid breeding habitats in the Firestone Rubber Plantation at Harbel, Liberia, were surveyed by human-biting collections conducted at weekly intervals over a 13-month period. Black flies were identified morphologically and the monthly and seasonal contribution of different vector species to the transmission of Onchocerca volvulus at each site was determined. Simulium yahense was identified as the predominant vector species at each site. Greatest populations of this species occurred during wet season (May-Oct), but its imp

[Several principles for epidemiologic evaluation of individual regions of the Trans-Caucasian plains-piedmont natural focus of plague].

The authors analyse many-year data concerning the epizootological study of seven landscape-geographical regions of the Eastern Transcaucasus differing by natural conditions and the enzootic intensity. Quantitative assessment of natural nidality determined by the level (norm) of many-year indices calculated for the years of 1955--1974 are presented for each region. Flea vectors were more numerous in localities of stable enzootic manifestation; also the numbers of Meriones erythrourus (carrier rodent) was more stable than in the regions of temporary occurrence of the causative agent and those fr

Delay of sexual maturation in female house mice by exposure to grouped females or urine from grouped females.

The experiments examined the timing, duration and possible enhancement effects of group contact on the delay of sexual maturation produced in prepubertal female house mice by urine from grouped females. One or three days of pheromone stimulation at specified ages during the first 2 weeks after weaning was not sufficient to delay puberty in females caged singly. However, pheromone treatment for 7 days, beginning during the first week after weaning, did significantly delay the onset of first vaginal oestrus relative to control females treated with water. Both the timing and duration of pheromone

Validation of a case definition for osteoporosis disease surveillance.

UNLABELLED: A simple case definition for osteoporosis case diagnosis is feasible based upon administrative health data. This may facilitate implementation of a population-based osteoporosis surveillance program, providing information that could help to inform and guide screening, prevention, and treatment resources. INTRODUCTION: Our aim was to construct and validate a simplified algorithm for osteoporosis case ascertainment from administrative databases that would be suitable for disease surveillance. METHODS: Multiple classification rules were applied to different sets of hospital diagnosi

Population-based incidence and characteristics of community-onset Staphylococcus aureus infections with bacteremia in 4 metropolitan Connecticut areas, 1998.

This study retrospectively analyzed the magnitude and epidemiology of community-onset Staphylococcus aureus (COSA) infections and methicilli … infections were COSA (incidence, 17 cases/100,000 persons). Incidence increased with age and higher population density. In all, 62% of infections were health care associated; 85% of the remaining cases had underlying medical conditions. MRSA accounted for 16% of health care-associated cases and cases with underlying conditions but no cases with no underlying conditi …

Biotic factors and occurrence of Lutzomyia longipalpis in endemic area of visceral leishmaniasis, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil.

The relationships between environmental exposure to risk agents and health conditions have been studied with the aid of remote sensing imagery, a tool particularly useful in the study of vegetation cover. This study aims to evaluate the influence of environmental variables on the spatial distribution of the abundance of Lutzomyia longipalpis and the reported canine and human visceral leishmaniasis (VL) cases at an urban area of Campo Grande, state of Mato Grosso do Sul. The sandfly captures were performed in 13 residences that were selected by raffle considering four residences or collection s

Comparative and demographic analysis of orang-utan genomes.

'Orang-utan' is derived from a Malay term meaning 'man of the forest' and aptly describes the southeast Asian great apes native to Sumatra and Borneo. The orang-utan species, Pongo abelii (Sumatran) and Pongo pygmaeus (Bornean), are the most phylogenetically distant great apes from humans, thereby providing an informative perspective on hominid evolution. Here we present a Sumatran orang-utan draft genome assembly and short read sequence data from five Sumatran and five Bornean orang-utan genomes. Our analyses reveal that, compared to other primates, the orang-utan genome has many unique featu

Measuring the functional responses of farmland birds: an example for a declining seed-feeding bunting.

1. Many farmland bird species have undergone significant declines. It is important to predict the effect of agricultural change on these birds and their response to conservation measures. This requirement could be met by mechanistic models that predict population size from the optimal foraging behaviour and fates of individuals within populations. A key component of these models is the functional response, the relationship between food and competitor density and feeding rate. 2. This paper describes a method for measuring functional responses of farmland birds, and applies this method to a dec

Spatiotemporal variation in a Lyme disease host and vector: black-legged ticks on white-footed mice.

We monitored population density of white-footed mice (Peromyscus leucopus), burdens of immature black-legged ticks (Ixodes scapularis) on mice, and infection prevalence of host-seeking ticks on six forest plots in southeastern New York State from 1995 through 1999. Despite densities of mice that fluctuated two orders of magnitude, average larval and nymphal tick burdens per mouse remained remarkably constant. Spatial variability in mouse density and tick burdens was modest. The total number of larval and nymphal ticks that fed on the mouse population each year depended strongly on population d…

Parity and breastfeeding are contributing factors for geographical differences in breast cancer risk.

PURPOSE: Urbanization has emerged as one of the main determinants of the rising breast cancer incidence in Asia, but understanding the link is hindered by the lack of population-based prospective cohorts, especially in low- and middle-income countries. Given that mammographic density (MD) is one of the strongest breast cancer risk factors and that it is associated with known lifestyle and reproductive factors, we explored using MD to delineate factors associated with differences in breast cancer risk between women living in urban and rural areas. METHODS: Using data from a cross-sectional stu

Bone health and its association with lifestyle factors among urban and rural middle-aged Indian adults.

UNLABELLED: In 744 adults from Pune (Western India) and nearby villages, osteoporosis prevalence was higher in rural women than urban (43% vs 18%). Advancing age, location, height, tobacco use and sunlight were key determinants. These findings emphasize urgent need for preventive and management strategies in rural population to reduce osteoporosis burden. BACKGROUND: About 150 million older adults (age > 60y) live in India presently, representing ~ 14% of the global older population. The population is expected to reach 324 million by 2050, leading to higher healthcare burden from conditions l

Epidemiological study on leishmaniasis in an area of environmental tourism and ecotourism, State of Mato Grosso do Sul, 2006-2007.

The aims of this study were to carry out a serological survey of canine leishmaniasis and identify the phlebotomine fauna in the urban area of Bonito, Mato Grosso do Sul. The serological survey was conducted on a sample of 303 dogs, by means of the indirect immunofluorescence test. Phlebotomines were captured using automated light traps. The serological survey found that 30% of the dogs were seropositive, both from the center and from all districts of the town. A total of 2,772 specimens of phlebotomines were caught and the species most found was Lutzomyia longipalpis (90.4%), which corroborat

Prevalence of tuberous sclerosis complex in Taiwan: a national population-based study.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is an autosomal dominant disorder caused by mutations in the TSC1 and TSC2 genes. Previous studies have estimated the prevalence of TSC to be 1:8,000 to 1:30,000. The numbers of patients and the populations accessed in these studies are relatively small. The aim of this study is to evaluate the prevalence of TSC in Taiwan with a population of 23 million people. METHODS: 95% of Taiwanese are enrolled in a single national health insurance database. This study uses this database to estimate the prevalence of TSC in a large Chinese population. RE

Rabies risk in raccoon dogs and foxes.

Raccoon dogs are seen as a new host for fox rabies in Europe. Disease spread in a community of species can change the epidemiology of the disease and calls for new disease control strategies. This study assesses the risk of a rabies outbreak, introduced to a community of foxes and raccoon dogs in Southern Finland, as an example of the reintroduction of rabies into rabies-free areas. Epidemiology is simulated with a two-species model, based on approaches for rabies in foxes and parameterised from recently published data on raccoon dog and fox ecology in Northeast Europe. The risk of the establi

Impact of host community composition on Lyme disease risk.

The drivers of variable disease risk in complex multi-host disease systems have proved very difficult to identify. Here we test a model that explains the entomological risk of Lyme disease (LD) in terms of host community composition. The model was parameterized in a continuous forest tract at the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies (formerly the Institute of Ecosystem Studies) in New York State, U.S.A. We report the results of continuing longitudinal observations (10 years) at the Cary Institute, and of a shorter-term study conducted in forest fragments in LD endemic areas of Connecticut, New
